Published by Jeremy Crosmer (A0.839102). Ignatius Sancho is thought to be the first person of African origin to vote in Britain. He was born on a slave ship sailing to the Caribbean, and became an orphan soon after. While he was a slave, his intellect impressed the Duke of Montagu, who lent him access his library. He ran away at age 18 to the Montagu house, where he developed his skills in music, poetry, reading and writing, eventually becoming a prominent abolitionist. By 1774 he was able to open his own grocery shop in London, and owning property allowed him to vote. The 12 Country Dances were written in 1779, shortly before his death, and dedicated to Miss North. The dances were performed in line-dance formation, and the original score includes instructions. Whilst the piece is marked easy, the first part may present a challenge to inexperienced players. The other parts are easy. Rustic Dance was composed by C.R. (Cyrus Ryerson) Howell (1857-?), a Canadian minister, artist and musician and was first published by the De Luxe Music Company of New York in 1900. It has been described as a quirky country-dance style piece. It was used in a scene in the 1962 film “The Music Manâ€.

Published by James S Sclater (A0.961282). This four-movement work was premiered in 2016 by the Fondren Quartet. Movement 1, Morning Song, is an angular study in instrumental interplay. The 3rd movement, Graveyard Hoedown, is a type of Devil's Bluegrass dance. The elegy for quiet heroes honors those who risked their lives during WWII to hide Jews from the Nazis. The elegy for Jerzy Popieluszko is a memorial to the Polish Catholic priest who was murdered by the authorities for his outspokenness during the tumult in that country. If time is a factor, this work can be successfully done by just playing the first three movements, or perhaps performing movements 1, 4, and 3 in that order. This is serious, reflective music with rewards for both performers and audience. For advance players.

This work was written in 1999 for an international competition for quartets reflecting in music the visions in three of Edvard Munch's paintings. It is dedicated to the composer's wife, Rayna. 1. The Scream - Moderato - There are 51 versions of The Scream and the movement is in 51 sections grouped roughly into sonata form. The development is largely textural, and the movement hinges about a chord formed of open fifths a major third apart which will also re-appear in the other movements to give the quartet its sense of unity. The screaming is both audible and silent, and the footsteps on the bridge are portrayed both in a sense of passing by and also of running away. 2. Melancholy - Andante - Munch gave other titles to this painting, namely Jappe by the Shore and Jealousy . As jealousy and melancholy are retrospective emotions, tonal and modal music is employed, using the Norwegian folk song Millom bakkar og berg ut met havet set in a minor key for the first section. The A-B-A form then partially loses tonality for Jealousy, while returning to it for Melancholy itself. 3. The Dance of Life - Allegro - This movement is in rondo form, with hints of Norwegian country dances for the dancers in the painting. The two women are portrayed as one looking nostalgically to the light-heartedness of the old waltz and the other brooding on the darkness and latent sexuality of the new tango, the melodies for both of which are also corruptions of the country dances. The Munch chord alters the perspective on the scene as the movement progresses and eventually dissolves at the end as though the onlooker is passing on to another, equally unresolved future. This work was written in 1999 for an international competition for quartets reflecting in music the visions in three of Edvard Munch's paintings. It is dedicated to the composer's wife, Rayna. 1. The Scream - Moderato - There are 51 versions of The Scream and the movement is in 51 sections grouped roughly into sonata form. The development is largely textural, and the movement hinges about a chord formed of open fifths a major third apart which will also re-appear in the other movements to give the quartet its sense of unity. The screaming is both audible and silent, and the footsteps on the bridge are portrayed both in a sense of passing by and also of running away. 2. Melancholy - Andante - Munch gave other titles to this painting, namely Jappe by the Shore and Jealousy . As jealousy and melancholy are retrospective emotions, tonal and modal music is employed, using the Norwegian folk song Millom bakkar og berg ut met havet set in a minor key for the first section. The A-B-A form then partially loses tonality for Jealousy, while returning to it for Melancholy itself. 3. The Dance of Life - Allegro - This movement is in rondo form, with hints of Norwegian country dances for the dancers in the painting. The two women are portrayed as one looking nostalgically to the light-heartedness of the old waltz and the other brooding on the darkness and latent sexuality of the new tango, the melodies for both of which are also corruptions of the country dances. The Munch chord alters the perspective on the scene as the movement progresses and eventually dissolves at the end as though the onlooker is passing on to another, equally unresolved future. Given the cultural setting, and given the popularity of country dances, no doubt at least the children danced to this tune.The carol is also known by the name The First Good Thing That Mary Had, which is the first line of text.PDF contains the full score, individual parts, and a piano reduction provided to give a quick idea of what the arrangement sounds like. The number of verses varies, but one thing is for certain. It's purpose was to teach the story of the Virgin Mary from the birth of Jesus until His glorification in heaven. There are at least seven verses, each one telling Mary's experiences through the life of Christ. No doubt this was used to teach children and others who did not have or could not read the Scriptures.

The famous Corta-jaca, the name with which the Gaucho tango became popular, is one of the most recorded and known songs by Chiquinha Gonzaga, alongside Ó abre alas, Lua Branca and Atraente. He was born on the stages of musical theaters, where he was danced in the final scene of the burlesque operetta of national customs Zizinha Maxixe, imitated from French by an anonymous author, performed at Teatro Éden Lavradio, in August 1895. Actor Machado Careca (José Machado Pinheiro e Costa ), anonymous author of the play, ended up putting verses in Corta-jaca's music, helping to popularize it, especially after its version was recorded on disk by the duo Os Geraldos. Throughout history, Corta-jaca attended other stages and repertoires: coffee-singers, beer-beauties, choro circles… But it was at the Palácio do Catete, in 1914, that it reached its glory. Performed on the guitar by First Lady Nair de Teffé, it caused political scandal and ended up calling the administration Hermes da Fonseca. The reaction can be measured by the impassioned speech that Senator Rui Barbosa delivered from the gallery. When inquiring what the cut-jaca that he had heard so much about is, he concludes: “The lowest, the most foul, the rudest of all wild dances, the twin sister of batuque, cateretê and samba. But at presidential receptions, the cut-jaca is performed with all the honors of Wagner's music, and we don't want the conscience of this country to revolt, our faces redden and the youth to laugh!†Never before in the history of Brazil has eminently popular music been performed in the seat of government, in front of the diplomatic corps and the country's elite. Corta-jaca became a classic of the great repertoire of Brazilian instrumental music, deserving recordings, among others, by Abel Ferreira, Altamiro Carrilho, Antonio Adolfo, Artur Moreira Lima, Clara Sverner, Conjunto Regional do Donga, Eudóxia de Barros, Guio de Morais, Itamar Assieré, Leandro Braga, Marcus Viana, Maria Teresa Madeira, Marcelo Verzoni, Paulo Moura, Radamés Gnatalli, Rosária Gatti, Talitha Peres, TurÃbio Santos, numerous bands and some sung versions. I explored even further the use of the twelve-tone theory connecting the tone-row changes by the notes shared between hexachords. In this case, I composed a Suite of 5 Argentinian Dances, with their own rhythmic patterns, signature changes, tempo, and musical language, in a serialist framework. The purpose was to showcase the intersection between Western Classical Music and my Argentinian and Latin American culture and influence. Opus Argentino is my first ever string quartet and is an invitation for people to get to know where I come from and  embrace my country’s culture.
