Inspired by baroque forms, it is intended as a relatively simple study with a few more challenging passages. The first movement is a fugue on a robust subject, played at an andante pace. This is followed by a simple chorale-like Lento movement. Finally, a chaconne played Presto - or as near to it as possible! This arrangement adapted for string ensemble was designed to make its listeners weep with emotion, because the adaptation preserves the original essence of the work, keeping its integrity faithful to what Beethoven wanted to transmit, with only a slight change in tone and addition of harmonic resources in the structure of the arrangement. Even though it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion, being intended for beginner students who want to immerse themselves in the universe of romantic music, and nothing better than starting with the transitional composer of this period, which also does not prevent professional teachers from using it for recitals, academic presentations or didactic material in their classes as an ensemble practice.Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C minor sharp, Op. 27, No. 2, is one of his most popular compositions and was an audience favorite even in his day. Written when Beethoven was 31, the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was composed after he finished some commissioned works, but there is no evidence that he was hired to write this work. It did not receive its nickname until 1832, five years after Beethoven's death. It was the critic Ludwig Rellstab who compared the music to a moonlighting on Lake Lucerne. This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).

This is my interpretation of this piece. I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I did arranging it. Feel free to make your own interpretations too. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1402959). This Second String Quartet is in four movements, and runs to over 30 minutes long. The work uses the traditionally expected forms for each movement, as a framework or starting point for departure, but also uses a conceptual title for the work as a whole. In this case 'Locomotion', or the conveying of motion (especially with regards to train travel), was used as a compositional stimulus in creating extended pattern-based textures, as well as the development, or journey, of motifs and themes. Otherwise, there is no particular attempt to evoke the sound of particular modes of transportation, or certain landscapes or scenes. Such imagery is left at the discretion of the listener. Formally, the work begins with a loose sonata form first movement, based around E (modal minor). The second movement, on A, bears the hallmarks of a busy scherzo, while the sentimental slow movement in D minor that follows is based on ground basses, in a ternary form of two varied themes. The extended finale grows out of the previous movement, with a jig-like rondo theme on another ground bass. Contrasting episodes feature modulating material, as well as a secondary theme in C. The final section sees a cyclic return of the first movement's first theme, now at the finale's faster tempo, and in the closing key of G minor. The String Quartet no II comprises four movements: 1. Preludio, Passacaglia, Minuetto and Trio and Rondo. The first movement is fast and furious and cast in a modified sonata form - announcing two contrasting themes with a transitional section in between. The development section fulfills the role of various transformations and fragmental modifications of segmented thematic material, adding instabitily to the movement. The recapitulation is truncated, rather referential to the exposition and presented in reversed order. The second movement is a plaintive passacaglia, with a recurring eight-bar melody - in this case not traditional in nature as the bassline mostly carried the melody throughout, but nw distributed between all the string instuments. The theme is heard fourteen times. The use of textural contrast and canonic procedures add to the contrapuntal nature of the movement. The Minuetto and Tro movement is strikingly neo-tonal, and but sudden shifts of scalar centricities in the Minuetto add to suspension and elements of surprise. The Trio is more lyrical in character and fluttering fragments create dialogue between the members of the quartet. The last movement is cast in a modified Rondo form. The refrain parts are continuously presented in different textural and harmonic content. The alternating first episode draws material from the first movement and the second from the third movement, resulting in a cyclic structure of the work as a whole. The musical language is loosely based within extended tonality, with modal intersections and dissonant colours, making consonant sonoroties slightly ambiguous and unpredictable.2016 Chamber Music Contest Entry.

I have shamelessly combined ideas from three famous pieces poular for funerals: Pachelbel's Canon, Elgar's Nimrod from the Enigma Variations and Chopin's Marche Funebre from his 2nd Pianoforte Sonata. So it is a passacaglia, having a solemn repeating 4 bars in the bass; 8 variations on a 4 bar phrase; and an accompanied canon having each variation repeated twice, in the second violin and viola after delays, while a new variation appears in the 1st Violin. All in D minor, but a tierce de Picardie ends the piece. Only 3 minutes: after all that work!
