The song became the band's breakthrough hit, reaching number one on the UK singles chart and establishing them as one of the top British Invasion bands of the 60's. The song's style ended up being very influential for generations of rock and punk musicians afterward, and the song has lived on in the cultural canon and is still beloved to this day. This Cellobat arrangement of You Really Got Me for string quartet is true to the original Kinks recording, with its driving beat, punk-rock feel, and epic solo -- which violin 1 and 2 get to share! This chart will be readable for professionals and playable for advanced-intermediate students; overall it's more of an intermediate level, with fairly straightforward rhythms and almost entirely in 1st position, but it goes by pretty fast and it might be worth it for V2 to look at the guitar solo beforehand :) and most of all, have fun! Inside, you will get a full score, as well as individual parts for each instrument. I tried to make sure that each instrument would get a part of the melody and would not be continuously stuck with a particular role (i.e. harmony, rhythm, etc.). That being said, the cello does read tenor clef right in the beginning of the piece (it's gets much easier, though), the melodic rhythms are very syncopated, and while the rhythms predominantly in violin 2 and viola aren't too difficult, they can get very repetitive. So, I would say that this arrangement is more aimed for an advanced-intermediate quartet, but don't let that stop you if you want to try it. Happy playing!

A list of names gives an idea of the riches: Bizet, Berlioz, Gounod, Massenet, Meyerbeer, Offenbach, Saint-Saëns, Thomas, Lalo and Halévy, plus Italian composers who wrote operas to French texts for Paris production, including Rossini, Donizetti and Verdi. With such a treasure trove, in is inevitable that some very fine music has been allowed to drift into obscurity. In his time, Delibes was celebrated for his melodic gift, but of the more than twenty operas and operettas that he wrote, only Lakmé is performed today, and even it is rare. The Flower Duet (Sous le dôme épais) for soprano and mezzo-soprano, is by far the best known number from this, or any, Delibes opera. The lovely sinuous melody has been used as background music for numerous films, television shows and commercials.This arrangement for string quartet is full length and includes the opening recitative, which can be omitted if desired. It has been transposed from the original B major to C major, which lies better for strings, as well as being easier to read at sight. CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. He is a free lance professional violist and violinist specializing in chamber music, who began making string quartet and trio arrangements for wedding, party and corporate events, to expand the repertory or to improve on existing versions. Lila told me she had a summer festival in Salem, NY, and wondered if I would like to write a piece for her. I said sure. Just as in Hollywood, you never say no. At first Lila asked me if I would like to write a companion piece for Anton Webern’s Saxophone Quartet. I said sure!!! One thing led another and somehow I ended up agreeing to write a piano quintet for her. In the meanwhile Lila contacted Delores Stevens, artistic director of the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Festival, and asked her if she would also premiere the work at her festival. Delores did a little research on me and my music online and she said yes. So, here we are. Siamo d’accordo. I wrote my first piano quintet in 1988 for the Apple Hill Chamber Players. That was not the usual quintet of a piano and string quartet. The Schubert Trout quintet was my model: piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass. I titled that work, Piano Quintet … apple strudel (1988). At that time I was a huge fan of the Entenmann’s Apple Strudel. I imagined the piano being encased/surrounded by the four string instruments. My first real piano quintet was written for the Formosa Quartet and pianist Tammy Lum. They premiered the work at Nyack College during the spring of 1988. My current piano quintet (no. 2) is titled Pq2 … (2014). It is a work in five movements. I. Moderato … Trio II. Adagio … III. Tsiaj 1 … Allegro IV. Tsiaj 2 … Prestissimo! V. Adagio What’s tsiaj? I got this from Charles E. Ives. The title of the middle movement of his Piano Trio is TSIAJ. It’s an acronym of This Scherzo is a joke. Enjoy!

I didn’t seek to re-invent the wheel with this arrangement, but rather to capture some of its signature jazz combo swagger while fitting the signature lines & licks into string-friendly voicings. I did add an original intro & outro, which will give a bit more pizazz to your live performance than the fade out from Herbie’s original album version. The full chart includes written-out solos for each member of the quartet. I highly encourage improvising your own solos if you are comfortable, or even vamping one or more of the solo sections to really stretch out as you watch your next cocktail hour gig fly by! For a shorter (and significantly more lame…) performance, you can instead cut one or more of the solo sections from letter C thru F to save time. This arrangement makes use of modern extended string techniques in order to create a rhythmic foundation without the need for additional rhythm instruments, including chopping and ghost notes. If you are unfamiliar with these concepts, various resources exist all over the internet to aid you in your quest towards having better time. If you use neither, you may feel as if something is missing in your life that you just can’t pinpoint. Don’t worry, I’ll pinpoint it for you: BACKBEATS. One way or another, you need them. And I’ve given you multiple options here so if you can’t make this chart groove that’s on you… Performance time - approximately 5:00 for the full chart as written. As mentioned above, solo sections can be repeated with improv or cut without requiring significant chart changes, to adjust to the needs of your specific performance.
