Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6234). In this work, the quartet becomes a single composite instrument. This instrument cannot play individual sounds but rather composite gestures, of which the initial impulse linked to the production of a sound is an integral element. In a journey to Thailand, I visited Wat Arun, “the Temple of Dawn.†First from a distance, it appeared as a majestic looming tower possessing a monolithic form. It was then of extreme surprise to proceed closer only to discover that the tower was actually comprised from thousands of small shards of ceramic plates. From the closer perspectival proximity, these small shards created intricate filigreed patterns. The play between the presence of the temple’s totality and its fractured parts helped to provide both the material and formal conceptions for this quartet. The piece is built from three movements with two “sonic windows†between them. In the first movement, the composite sounds are introduced and form phrases interjections, and a part of a song; the second movement is similar to an improvisation using these composite sounds; the last movement is a speech composed of the fragments from the first two movements. The piece is dedicated to the Arditti String Quartet. – Chaya Czernowin & Steven Kazuo Takasugi.

The original concept of the piece is based on the dual personality, meaning two completely opposing characteristics are coexisting in an individual. The two characters, A and B, keep appearing alternatively and sometimes one interrupts the other by revealing itself under the existence of the other. This concept is realized musically in the piece through the contrast and collaboration between the Tri-tone and the Perfect 4th, in other words, the dissonance versus consonance. The work is a single movement music consisting of four small sections: introduction of the dissonance, introduction of the consonance, the intervention of two sonorities to each other, and the resolution. The relationship between these two opposite sonorities creates the tension and relaxation throughout the piece. They are first introduced separately, constantly alternated in different instruments, and then gradually interrupting and manipulating each other.

Due to the continuity, the musical elements and compositional concepts are connected smoothly through out the piece. The vigorous pizzicato opens up the first movement of this piece, imitates the traditional Chinese Gong-and-Drum rhythmic patterns. The cello solo main theme flows in later and develop the music to the following sections. The second movement is inspired from the concept of poetry reading. It is the most intensive section and holds the greatest contrast of this piece. The third movement combines elements from the earlier movments and leads to the fourth movement, Lebendiges Finale. The musical ideas between these four movments of the composition are strongly revelent to each other. The musical content in a composition sets up the style for itself. Even under some restrictions of tradional musical forms, the composer tried to develop few new compositional ideas in order to achieve a new sphere of string quartet with this piece. String Quartet was commissioned by the Council for Cultural Affairs, finished in 1983, premiered on 4th of January 1985 in the National Taiwan University Student Activity Center. It was programed in the event A Night of Shui-Long Ma’s Chamber Music, held by Asian Composers’ League-Taiwan Section and NTU-Philharmonic Club. The premiered musicians were: Wei-Chung Chiang (Violin I), Chin-Kuei Hong (Violin II), Ming-Li Wu (Viola) and Wan-Ling Sun (Cello). The first edition of the score was published in 1987, and the second edition published in 2016.

First Movement:In many ways this first movement can be summed up in one word: introspective. It is also a piece that reflects on landscapes of nature. A slow movement, it is essentially written around one main motif that is the driving force behind the movement. This motif becomes longer in the second movement eventually becoming the theme of the string quartet serving as a device to unify all of the movements.Second MovementThis movement is faster than the first, the melodies more fragmentary, more rhythmically driven. It is less introspective and more extroverted and restless. Exploring and expanding on the harmony of the first movement by exploring sound clusters, secundal and quartal harmony, while also playing with tonality more than the first movement did.
