String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1474698 Composed by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897). Arranged by Stephen Levintow. 19th Century,Romantic Period. 24 pages. Cypress Publishing #1052264. Published by Cypress Publishing (A0.1474698). Johannes Brahms is best known for his symphonies, concerti and large scale chamber works, but his catalog of over 200 Lieder shows he was also a master of small forms and intimate expression. Wiegenlied (Lullaby), included in this set of arrangements for string quartet, is one of the best known and most loved melodies ever written. His original gently syncopated accompaniment, reproduced here, makes an elegant backdrop for it. The set opens with Sapphische Ode (Sapphic Ode), whose title is not directly connected to the ancient Greek poet Sappho of Lesbos, but refers to the verse form of the poem Brahms set, that bears her name. The melody resembles the theme of the slow movement from Brahms’s violin concerto, written a few years earlier. Following it is Wenn du nur zuweilen lächelst (If you only sometimes smile), a fine example of the mood of longing and melancholy that Brahms often depicted in both songs and instrumental music. The music moves back and forth between major and minor, and the flowing 9/8 meter occasionally varies the 3+3+3 pulse to 2+2+2+3 in a natural-seeming way.Brahms never wrote an opera, but Von ewiger Liebe (Of Eternal Love), which builds from a somber opening, through a stormy middle section to a powerful climax, gives us a sense of what a Brahms operatic scene, in this case a love duet, might have sounded like. It is one of his most famous songs, and rightly so.CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. He is a free lance professional violist and violinist specializing in chamber music, who began making string quartet and trio arrangements for wedding, party and corporate events, to expand the repertory or to improve on existing versions. Selections include unusual pieces by both familiar and lesser-known composers, plus standard classical and popular favorites. The goal is to produce high-quality, musically satisfying arrangements faithful to the composer’s original material, yet sight-readable in most cases by working professionals or intermediate to advanced students. The full range of normal string technique is employed, while avoiding unnecessary technical complexity. Melodic material is distributed throughout the four voices where appropriate, to maintain listener and performer interest. All parts and scores are set in Sibelius© software format, with careful attention to legibility and page turns.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - SKU: A0.869118 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Contemporary,Jazz,Latin. Score and parts. 16 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #1914305. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869118). Morango ... almost a tango (1983) is the most popular piece of music from my portfolio of over 150 works!!! It is amazing that the work was conceived thirty years ago!!! Originally, it was just a 32-bar jazz tune I performed every Sunday night with the Moon Unit at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1980-1984. The string quartet version, although written for the Kronos Quartet, was premiered at Concert X by the Composers in Red Sneakers in Sanders Theater, Cambridge, Massachusetts, on July 21, 1983. The Red Sneakers String Quartet comprised of Thal Aylward, Melissa Howe, Frank Grimes and Sandy Kiefer. Richard Buell reported in the Boston Globe a few days later that the doleful Morango ... almost a tango got a lot of mileage out of a stubborn, almost unchanging cello line and the elaborations above it. The original program note read, Last summer in Vermont I met Gustavo Moretto, an Argentine composer, who taught me the finer and more beautiful aspects of the Tango. In my modest way, as someone looking in from the outside, I created Morango ... almost a tango - a bastardized version of the 'real thing.' Morango ... is also intrinsically connected to Kate Moran, a sometimes painter ... to whom it is dedicated. The work is played con sordino throughout. I hope the sirens next door don't intrude too much. But then again, John Cage would be delighted. Eventually, the Kronos got around to performing it on tour in Europe in 1986. When they played it as an encore in Italy at the American Academy in Rome, Mya Tannenbaum of the Corriere Della Sera wrote, Non sono mancati i bis. Un richiamo al sex appeal del vecchio tango da parte di un giovane «premio Roma», Tom Lee. Soon after, back in the States, the Kronos performed it at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. John Rockwell wrote in the New York Times, ... a soulfully beautiful score by Thomas Oboe Lee. Three months later the Kronos recorded it on their Nonesuch CD, White Man Sleeps. Many other string quartets, both here and abroad, have since added the work to their repertory. The Lydian String Quartet, especially, have taken the work on their concert tours in the United States, Europe and the former Soviet Union. It appears on a CD recorded by the Lyds in Moscow on MCA Classics. As interest in the work grew, other ensembles have requested arrangements of Morango ... There are now three other versions of the work: one for big band jazz ensemble by Ken Schaphorst, another for string orchestra commissioned by Aram Gharabekian and Sinfonova, and the third for violin and piano commissioned by the Paul Chou-Paul Salerni Duo. Of the string orchestra version, Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe wrote, Lee's piece, Morango ... almost a tango, is a transcription of atmospheric and elegant music originally composed for string quartet; it is as sultry as Faith Domergue in a film noir, and it steams. String Quartet String Quartet - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1329365 By Hugh Levey. By Charles Coote Jnr. Arranged by Hugh Levey. 19th Century,Chamber,Children,Christmas,Holiday. 21 pages. Woodwindly.com #917346. Published by woodwindly.com (A0.1329365). Looking for some familiar, yet very different Christmas Music? Look no further than the Snowdrift Galop written by British composer, Charles Coote Jnr. It starts off just like Jingle Bells - and the Jingle Bells theme keeps coming back, but is it actually Jingle Bells? It also has a march-like theme and a lovely Trio section. All players get to play important melodic material in this arrangement.Snowdrift Galop was published in London in 1868 in a small collection of works by various composers. The opening theme is immediately recognisable as the popular holiday favourite, Jingle Bells, which was published 11 years earlier, yet the composer gives no reference or credit to the earlier work. Although the opening theme is the same as Jingle Bells, we get a stately march instead of the familiar Jingle Bells chorus. A lovely Trio introduces another new tune which is played by clarinet 3, then bass clarinet before returning to the opening section.Charles Coote Jnr (1831-1916) was a prolific English composer of popular music, including quadrilles, waltzes and galops. His music was written for society balls and subsequently published for piano, so that others could play them at local dances or in their ownhomes. He was the son of composer and bandmaster, Charles Coote (1809-1880). Coote Snr worked for the 6th Duke of Devonshire for 30 years, conducted his private orchestra, and was referred to by the Duke as his personal pianist. Growing up in this environment would have ensured that Coote Jnr was well connected with British society.Duration - 4 minutes.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 3 - SKU: A0.752619 By Foo Fighters. By David Grohl. Arranged by Dury Loveridge. Rock. Score and parts. 14 pages. Dury Loveridge #3623867. Published by Dury Loveridge (A0.752619). The massive 1997 hit by The Foo Fighters, 'Everlong', faithfully arranged for string quartet. Dave Grohl wrote this song as a love song, saying That song's about a girl that I'd fallen in love with and it was basically about being connected to someone so much, that not only do you love them physically and spiritually, but when you sing along with them you harmonize perfectly. It's been featured numerous times in films and tv, and is a firm favourite at weddings thanks to its appearance in episode of 'Friends' where Monica and Chandler marry. This version keeps all of the rhythmic drive of the drum beat with octave snaps in the cello, with some great rhythms for the inner parts too.

My specific task from the Hudson Commission was to concentrate music based on the natural habitat and beauty of the Hudson as well as on the time of the first European settlers. It was natural for me to think about old-time fiddling in this light. In 1909 Washington Irving described the Catskill Mountains as a dismembered branch of the Appalachian Mountains. My own Dutch ancestors settled in the Hudson Valley in the early 1600’s, and eventually traveled down the Appalachians to settle in the South in the early 1800’s. The old-time fiddling that dominated those areas along that route is the musical language utilized in creating this String Quartet. For the musical genesis of the Quartet, I initially created phrases from the fiddle that were molded out of old-time fiddling tradition. With technical twists and turns, the phrases became unique and new but all the while still connected to the tradition. It is these phrases that I used as material to create the String Quartet. Through the process of composing, techniques such as re- harmonization, development, canonic applications spill over each other like the Hudson tributaries in the Adirondacks. The counterpoint of the Quartet invigorates and establishes itself. The result is a wholly participating body emphasizing transitions from the traditional to the contemporary in sound and style. The music here is no longer fiddle music as the inventions of the quartet embarks on a new story, a new way to play, and with a new musical idea to put forward. Allegro con brio, II. Dichterisches Adagio, III. Andante cantabile, IV. Lebendiges Finale. The composer designed this piece to play continuously between sections and makes the composition a quasi-single-movement. Due to the continuity, the musical elements and compositional concepts are connected smoothly through out the piece. The vigorous pizzicato opens up the first movement of this piece, imitates the traditional Chinese Gong-and-Drum rhythmic patterns. The cello solo main theme flows in later and develop the music to the following sections. The second movement is inspired from the concept of poetry reading. It is the most intensive section and holds the greatest contrast of this piece. The third movement combines elements from the earlier movments and leads to the fourth movement, Lebendiges Finale. The musical ideas between these four movments of the composition are strongly revelent to each other. The musical content in a composition sets up the style for itself. Even under some restrictions of tradional musical forms, the composer tried to develop few new compositional ideas in order to achieve a new sphere of string quartet with this piece. String Quartet was commissioned by the Council for Cultural Affairs, finished in 1983, premiered on 4th of January 1985 in the National Taiwan University Student Activity Center. It was programed in the event A Night of Shui-Long Ma’s Chamber Music, held by Asian Composers’ League-Taiwan Section and NTU-Philharmonic Club. The premiered musicians were: Wei-Chung Chiang (Violin I), Chin-Kuei Hong (Violin II), Ming-Li Wu (Viola) and Wan-Ling Sun (Cello). The first edition of the score was published in 1987, and the second edition published in 2016.

String quartet - difficult - SKU: S9.Q778767 String Quartet No. 6. Composed by Joerg Widmann. Downloadable, Score and parts. Duration 27 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q778767. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q778767). My quartets composed between 1997 and 2005 were conceived as an interconnected, self-contained cycle of works ranging from the (in my opinion) quasi revolutionary Quartet No. 1 to the Quartet No. 5 entitled Versuch über die Fuge [Attempt at a Fugue]. The Quartet No. 6 – Study on Beethoven – composed fourteen years after No. 5 should be conceived as a new approach and the commencement of a new quartet cycle with an unknown ending. All that can be said is that the subsequent quartets will be devoted to an intense study of Ludwig van Beethoven’s unique and consummate artistry of quartet composition. Despite a reverence for Beethoven at a very early stage, my own compositions have steered well clear of this unapproachable cosmos with the exception of my concert overture Con brio. The perhaps only link with the five quartets of the first cycle of quartets is the single-movement structure of the thirty-minute Quartet No. 6. The fundamental coordinates have otherwise been reset to zero. This is therefore also a ‘study’ in a literal sense. In the Quartet No. 6, I set out with a state of tonality displaying significant extensions whose centrifugal forces are barely containable. My focus is the detection of the inherent gravitation of tonality, including phenomenons such as tension/relaxation, suspension/resolution and fixation/deviation. From a formal aspect, the work is too experimental and unsentimental for explorations in a nostalgic-romantic sense. On the contrary, tonality or at least its fundamental assumptions are initially set down in the sense of a study or test assembly in order to permit subsequent experimentation, variation and the formulation of exceptions with the desire and firm conviction that it is possible to express something innovative and never previously heard with this seemingly exhausted fundamental material. I have been repeatedly astonished by the unfolding in the progression of this piece which has taken me to unknown locations, especially from a formal aspect. I am fascinated to see what forms the subsequent quartets in this ‘Beethoven study’ cycle will lead me to. The Quartet No. 6 has been created in close artistic and friendly cooperation with Anne-Sophie Mutter and she is the dedicatee of this work. Jörg Widmann, July 2019My quartets composed between 1997 and 2005 were conceived as an interconnected, self-contained cycle of works. The Quartet No. 6 composed fourteen years after No. 5 now opens a new cycle of quartets which will be devoted to an intense study of Ludwig van Beethoven’s unique and consummate artistry of quartet composition. Perhaps the only link with the five quartets of the first cycle is the single-movement structure of the almost thirty- minute Quartet No. 6. I am fascinated to see what forms the subsequent quartets in this ‘Beethoven study’ cycle will lead me to. Jörg Widmann.

The song Drive was used in the pilot episode of the 2015 BBC drama Doctor Foster. “White Blood was featured in season 3, episode 2 of The CW drama Reign. The first verse of the song Landslide was sampled in rapper Lil Uzi Vert's song The Way Life Goes from their album Luv Is Rage 2, as well as retaining some of the original vocals, so Oh Wonder are credited as featured artists on the song. Unforgotten is a British crime drama television series, which initially aired on ITV on 8 October 2015. It was created and written by Chris Lang and directed by Andy Wilson. The programme follows a team of London detectives led by DCI Cassie Stuart (Nicola Walker) (Series 1–4), DCI Jess James (Sinéad Keenan) (Series 5) and DI Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) as they solve cold cases of disappearance and murder. Each series consists of six episodes. Series 1 to 4 were broadcast in the UK in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2021. On 30 March 2021 a fifth series was announced, scheduled for release in 2023, and it was confirmed that Sanjeev Bhaskar would reprise his role. A year later it was confirmed that Sinéad Keenan would replace Walker as Bhaskar's new partner, DCI Jessica Jessie James. Filming for the fifth series began on 14 March 2022. The first episode of series 5 premiered on ITV in February 2023.Each series deals with a new case, introducing seemingly unconnected characters who are gradually revealed to have some relationship with the victim. As the murder mystery unfolds, the emotional ramifications of the crime on the lives of those affected are also explored. Unforgotten has received critical acclaim. Tom Courtenay won the 2016 BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actor for the first series and Mark Bonnar won the 2017 BAFTA Scotland for Best Actor in Television for the second series. Â

Sarah Cellobat Chaffee #4758857. Published by Sarah Cellobat Chaffee (A0.526092). Love Of My Life, from Queen's 1975 album A Night At The Opera, was originally written by Freddie Mercury for his ex-fiance Mary Austin. Notable for showcasing Mercury's familiarity with classical music, particularly Chopin and Beethoven, the song became a live-performance hit and was later adapted for the stage. This is an arrangement of the original studio version, and the classical influences are very apparent - it almost sounds like an andante movement from a Mozart or Beethoven quartet! Filled with beautiful lush four-part harmonies, interconnected counterpoint, sweeping melodic lines, and unexpected chord changes, this chart is not difficult to play but will have a major impact on your audience! Rated intermediate - this will be easily sightreadable by professionals and playable for students (keep an eye out for the occasional brief time signature change). Sarah “Cellobat†Chaffee is an in-demand acoustic & electric cellist and string arranger. Currently, she performs with legendary rock band Aerosmith in their “Deuces Are Wild†residency show, and she is the principal cellist for the Raiders House Band, playing for a crowd of 60,000 at all of the team's home games.
