Published by ACORDO Sheet Music (A0.778046). Danzi, Franz Ignaz (1763-1826) was a German composer. His works are not so popular. Only his wind quintets are know among woodwind players. He revered W. A. Mozart, and arranged Die Zauberflöte for string quartets. A set of the part notes was published by M. Falter, Munich around 1800. His arrangement consists of 17 pieces as follows. No.1, Hm! Hm! Hm! Hm! No.2, Zum Leiden bin ich auserkoren No.3, Schnelle Füsse rascher Mut No.4, Es lebe Sarastro Sarastro lebe! No.5, Herr ich bin zwar Verbrecherin No.6, Wenn tugend und gerechtigkeit No.7, Wie? wie? wie? No.8, O Isis und Osiris No.9, Bald prengt den Morgen zu verkünden No.10, Der, welcher wandert diese Straße voll Beschwerden No.11, Tamino mein! No.12, Wir wandelten durch Feuersgluten No.13, Papagena! Papagena! Weibchen! Täubchen! No.14, Klinget, Glockchen, klinget! No.15, Pa-Pa-Pa-Papageno No.16, Nur stille! stille! No.17, Heil sei euch GeweihtenThe arrangement was very faithful to the original, and is valuable in that players could enjoy the wonderful music as a chamber music.We first made the transcript of the sheet music published by M. Falter, and combined them to make scores. The scores show some discrepancies, which are usual in such old music notes, and was revised to obtain unified styles and articulations. In the revising, we referred the original score by Mozart.No.17, Heil sei euch Geweihten is Chorus. After the sings of the victory of the sun over night by Sarastro, Die Strahlen der Sonne vertreiben die Nacht, Zernichten der Heuchler erschlichene Macht., the priests thank to Isis and Osiris.

The Basler Fasnacht, known locally in Basel Stadt (CH) as D’ drey scheenschte Dääg (the three loveliest days), is a world-famous carnival where the Zeitgeist animates centuries of tradition. Local folks celebrate together with a good-humoured satire of current events through costumes, masks, poetry and visual art on carnival floats and lanterns. Amongst many other activities, participants decorate the city and open ad-hoc bars to sustain everyone with drinks and characteristic foods, all of which led to the Basler Fasnacht being included on the Unesco Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. Central to the whole experience is the music played on the streets, without electronic amplification, by two types of group: Gugge, with brass and percussion and Clique, with piccolos and side-drums made and played according to local custom. Symphonie Fastnachtique, part 1 contains four melodies from the Cliques: Der Arabi Nr 1, 2 and 3, followed by the Wettstein Marsch by Swiss composer Hermann Huber (1870-1926). The melodies in Der Arabi may sound familiar but the chances are that they pre-date their more famous versions. For example, Der Arabi Nr 1 is now better known as The British Grenadiers from the early 1700s but can be traced as far back as the 1560s, when the Basler Fasncacht was already centuries old and the Schweizerpfeife (Swiss Flute), with drums, supplied the de rigueur regimental music for foot-soldiers all over Europe. This version for string quartet is a mixture of original piccolo voicings and indulgence by the arranger. Some of the part for viola is based on an optional 4th voice, the Zierstimm. Fasnacht is a glorious celebration laced with a melancholy reflected by the marching tempi of the Cliques: often slower than 90 BPM. A standard march is around 120 BPM. Vyyl Gniege! (Enjoy!)

Published by Cypress Publishing (A0.1511369). Appreciation for the quality and charm of Clara Schumann’s music has increased in recent years as it has become better known. She was the daughter and prize pupil of the celebrated piano teacher Friedrich Wieck, and she toured internationally by her early teens. Wieck also taught Robert Schumann, but bitterly opposed the liaison of Robert and Clara, aware that it would cause him to lose control of her career and the income it generated. The two were able to marry only after a long court battle with Wieck.In the 40 years that Clara survived Robert, she composed very little, devoting her energy to performance, and to securing Robert’s musical legacy. Nobody can blame her for this, especially as performing was a far more secure way to support her large family. But we can still regret that she did not compose more, given the excellence of the small body of work we have. This set includes arrangements of two piano pieces from her Opus 15, Vier flüchtige Stücke (Four Fleeting Pieces), and two Lieder for voice and piano from her Opus 13, Der Mond kommt still gegangen (The Moon Comes Quietly) and Liebeszauber (Love’s Spell). Clara’s musical forms are generally more conventional than Robert’s, but she is capable of bold harmonies and modulations, often in the middle sections of her piano pieces. Opus 15, No. 3, the third of this set, is an example, with some rhythmic challenges to the quartet. Cypress Publishing offers other works by Clara Schumann arranged for string quartet under “Two Pieces by Clara Schumann” (from Op. 15 and Op. 21), and her wonderful song Liebst du um Schönheit (If You Love for Beauty), paired with Robert’s great Mondnacht (Moonlit Night) as “Two Songs by the Schumanns”.CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. German.Theodor Kirchner (1823-1903) began composing at a very early age, initially receiving great support from Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann and subsequently from Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Even his Lieder op. 1 already display a clear formal structure, the concentration of tonal material within a limited space and rhythmic variability. I have selected six lieder based on poems by Heinrich Heine originating from different periods of Kirchner’s life and interleaved them between seven bagatelles which make selective references to the previous or next lied, sometimes as a single note, a chord or a gesture.
