Brahms's Prelude and Fugue in G minor, WoO 10, is an essential early organ work demonstrating his mastery of counterpoint and the organ as a medium. The Prelude and Fugue were composed in the mid-1850s when Brahms was intensively studying counterpoint and turning to the organ for his contrapuntal skills. The Prelude begins quietly but builds in power and tension. At the same time, the fugue transforms the central theme into a lean, darkly probing juggernaut that accrues tension as it develops. These early organ works frame Brahms's entire oeuvre, as they were composed at the start of his career, while the Eleven Chorale Preludes, Op. 122 was his final work, composed just before and after the death of Clara Schumann. Brahms's organ compositions thus bookend his prolific output, spanned symphonies, concertos, chamber music, choral works, and more. Overall, Brahms's Prelude and Fugue in G minor, WoO 10, is an important early work that showcases his mastery of counterpoint and the organ and is a significant marker in developing his compositional style.

FANTASIA UPON A CABBAGE - STRING QUARTETFor School Music Teachers and for adults with a sense of the ridiculous...Derek Hasted writes This really does need a bit of explanation. Well, more than a bit!As a Music Teacher I often have to teach beginners how to read music, and of course the seven names of the musical notes can be made to spell words. Like CABBAGE.This, then, is a little piece of kitchen-based nonsense, cooking up a rather unappetising dish comprising cabbage, egg, beef and a lot, lot more cabbage. I’ve arranged it (if that is the word) to include nods to the renaissance and baroque periods.The scores contain mark-ups to show where a particular player has an item of food in their motif.As well as EGG, you’ll find some GEG (that’s scrambled egg) and a BAD EGG (and some sad music). You’ll also find that the recipe includes a helping or two of BEEF.Bach comes in for a special mention, as there’s a fugue-like section where the subject comes in a fifth away from the starting key (which I’ve loosely interpreted as being a recipe in a foreign language) and there’s some stretti (well, just about) at the end, when the fugue subjects overlap a tiny, tiny amount. And we also pay homage to the pedal section of an organ, where the CABBAGE subject comes in down low on the 'cello at half the speed of the original.The final, jazzy, chord at the end contains seven notes that collectively spell CABBAGE.So there are lots of teaching points, lots of things to ask the audience to listen out for, and a lot of mischief in a compact piece.The musical refrain CABBAGE is not the greatest motif to work with, but on reflection, when you have this much cabbage, it’s much better to listen to it than have to eat it...I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. Handel’s great set of 12 Concerti grossi (= Grand Concertos, in the first edition) op. 6 are somehow a bit related in spirit, through their power and diversity, with Beethoven’s string quartets. Therefore, here they are arranged for the more ‘abstract’ and ‘timeless’ medium of the string quartet, allowing also for an addition to the repertoire of the respective ensembles. Articulation, tempo and dynamics indications were specified or added where needed, and all the trills were indicated to start with the upper auxiliary note, not only according to the Baroque performance practice but also fitting to the melodic contour. Concerto grosso in B minor, op. 6 no. 12: 1. Largo-Allegro moderato – dramatic introduction, like in a French overture, then agitated and brilliant; 2. Aria (Larghetto) – soothing, with 2 variations; 3. Largo-Allegro – brief, tragic transition, then an animated fugue on a gigue-like theme. The mp3 audio clip is the final movement (Allegro). The second has a calm texture, with a solo of harmonics sitting on top of shimmering chords. The final movement ricochets from classical structure to classical structure, starting as a fugue and building energy through inventions, chorales and solos before culminating in a joyful burst of excitement.

Thus, the second movement acts both as a scherzo and as a huge coda for the first movement, and the third movement is equally ambivalent as a slow movement in the varied ternary form or as a vast introduction to the final, strong-willed but bouncy double fugue (which has also simultaneously a motivic development).
