Phil Beaman #5741603. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844848). Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911) was a Parisian organist, performer, and composer. This Marche was originally written for organ in his pedagogical books. I have arranged it for Instrumental Quartet in typical Romantic Symphonic style and I have filled it with expressive markings to bring out the incredible drama of this piece. There is a Trio style section in the sub-dominant key which I treat as an instrumental duet. The piece is Advanced Intermediate realizing that it pushes many of the instruments to both extremes of their ranges. It is furthering challenging due to the plethora of romantic accidentals including double sharps and double flats and constant dynamic changes. This piece amply rewards you in the end with a very impressive and dramatic repertoire performance piece.

Sway With Me was written for Mexican singer Pedro Infante but first recorded in 1953 as an instrumental Cha-Cha-Cha ¿Quién será? (Who Will Be?) by its Mexican composers Luis Demetrio and Pablo Beltrán Ruiz. Infante sang it in the film School for Tramps (1954). The version on which this arrangement is based was recorded by Dean Martin and the Dick Stabile Orchestra in 1954, with new lyrics in English completely rewritten by Norman Gimbel from the rather melancholy original in Spanish. Sway With Me has remained popular and been subsequently recorded by numerous artists in several styles. This arrangement for string quartet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription in the same tonality as the original recording, so you could even play along with it for fun. The level is on the easier side of “advancedâ€; quickly rehearsed by professional quartets and an accessible challenge for experienced students.Enjoy!

The music of pianist-composer Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944) was highly popular in her lifetime, but mostly neglected afterward. It is fortunately now being rediscovered. Her character pieces, of which she wrote many, display charm and wit, with elegant French romantic sensibility. This set of arrangements for string quartet includes includes selected works composed between 1887 and 1910. It begins with two excerpts from her ballet suite Callirhoë for piano, Pas des Amphores and Pas des écharpes (Scarf Dance), followed by Idylle, from a set of 6 Romances sans Paroles. The next piece, Chanson Russe (Russian Song), if it isn’t based on an actual folksong, is a clever imitation. The set concludes with the gently uplifting Romance in D major.
