I originally arranged it for Voice with Quartet accompaniment in F, with my daughter, Alice Rose Wild, who sings on the live recording. You can hear our recording of the whole song on my channel if you type in Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, ‘All I want for Christmas’ into Youtube. More recently I have created this version for String Quartet in the key of G. At the moment I have only the Sibelius computer score, and hope to record it with Capriccio Quartet once the covid pandemic is at an end. Suspend your disbelief!Why choose my Arrangement?The arrangement is in a great key for strings and most of the double stopping includes an open string. In one or two places the double stopping is a bit more tricky, so for younger players it would be better perhaps to miss out one of the notes, or to play them consecutively.The Intro.For the first violinist I include two versions of the intro and recommend that the quartet listen to the original, or to Alice’s recording for speed and performance tips. It is quite difficult to get the computer to do it musically, so the video intro is only intended as a rough guide. One of the enclosed options is intended as a rehearsal version, and has the lyrics to help. I have bowed it to include lots of downbows, and recovery of bows, which will help the other members to follow. The tricky sextuplet and triplet ornament at bar 10 can be omitted altogether. Simply pause on the ‘C’ and then recover the downbow for the next bar.I also include two versions of the violin two and viola parts. One is on two pages as a smaller font, and one on three pages with a larger font.For cellists who are a bit daunted by the solo at letter A , simply play the fourth position semi breve Gs at bar 12 and at bars 13 and 14 too, and revert to the original score at bar 15. ie Six semibreve Gs. Perhaps a harmonic D at bar 15 would be easier than a shift at this point, and then join in unison with the rest of the band.The song moves between a straight crotchet pulse and lots of syncopated lines. This will be difficult to read on paper, but I always recommend listening to the song many times and then doing it by ear, using the notes on the page as a guide. Try not to play them too literally.PrintoutsPages 1 - 10 are for Look Inside Options only.Pages 11 - 28 includes all PartsPage 29 onwards is the optional Score for rehearsals. The vocal version is proving popular, but for a standard quartet Wedding and Events repertoire I hope that people will enjoy this arrangement. Selling over a million copies in the UK, it reached number four in the UK singles chart. Always a favourite for weddings, Capriccio Quartet recorded it for their repertoire, and it is a song that easily lends itself to a string arrangement.I chose to stick to the original key of D, a great key for string players. At times I have thickened the texture by using double stopping. In this arrangement I have tried to use an open string wherever possible. In some cases there are bare fifths. If you prefer you can choose one of the notes to play instead, especially if this note is doubled in another part. I have also put in some bowing, but the endgame is to feel comfortable, so please feel free to change it and alter the slurring if it makes it easier. I have given the cellist some solos, but everyone in the quartet has some time in the sun in this arrangement. And don’t be afraid to use open strings in this piece, especially in the semi- quavers. They sound great!I am aiming this quartet at the professional market, for weddings and other events, but I am hopeful that younger players will also have the courage to try it, even if the intention is not to ever perform it but to have some fun! I did this arrangement with 2nd year students in mind. The piece is really good for focusing on low 2's in the violin and viola, dotted quarter AND triplet rhythms for everyone, and rests on beat 1. The rhythms are almost always true to the original. There are usually three independent rhythmic parts going on, which presents a challenge and makes the layers of the piece fun and interesting. The piece also utilizes some percuissive techniques including stomping on the floor (sounds awesome on stage!) and knocking on the back of the instrument. This piece is a blast to play and I hope you enjoy it!

It is a much loved song, very well received by the critics and public alike, and hugely popular at weddings. As well as this arrangement for string quartet, I also have an arrangement on Sheet Music Plus, for female singer and string quartet backing. The Quartet version can be found on my Skinny Black Dogs Youtube Channel, by typing in ‘Romeo and Juliet, Kissing You’. The parts are not difficult to play, and the key is easy for strings. As usual, the first violin has the hardest part in trying to sustain the slow melody with a good vibrato, but my bowing is just a guide, and less experienced players can easily change the bow more often. There is some double stopping, in order to get all the necessary notes into those beautiful chords which thickens the texture, but almost all of it has an open string as one of the notes. There is a tricky part for cello at Bar 28, but with a little help from a good teacher, I’m sure that it is not impossible. The cellist in my Youtube recording plays it very lightly, and it could also be done in thumb position, played an octave lower, or simplified. There is also a cello solo in fourth position at bar 14 including the high harmonic A. There needs to be room for some rubato in the song and the lead needs to be taken from whomever has the tune! Hope you enjoy playing this song! It was a lot of fun to arrange!

After having the privilege of getting a string quartet to play the previous version for me, I came to realize that I did not like it and removed it from this website until I could write a better arrangement. Of the changes that I made, I split up the melody amongst the whole quartet instead of just giving it to the cello, and I changed various voicings, registers, and accompanying rhythms to make it more involved and enjoyable for the performers. However, I would still rate this arrangement for intermediate performers at the very least since there are passages in most of the parts that have the performers playing in the third position. The format of the download is one pdf consisting of the score and parts. I hope you enjoy this arrangement, and happy playing!

STRING QUARTET/STRING ENSEMBLEDerek Hasted writes I first arranged this lovely tune for The Hampshire Guitar Orchestra, and my arrangement here produces the same big sound from an intermediate string quartet, but using the sustain and wider pitch range to make the piece really sing. School teachers will find this is an ideal piece for an end of semester concert, and adult quartets will find it makes a restful and easy-to-play interlude piece in a full-length concert. Being so well-known, this will be an audience pleaser!Most of the instruments stay in the low positions throughout the piece.I like to think that the viola player gets a rather fun-to-play line here, and the 'cello part begins with a homage to Bach's Air on the G String, but the audience will probably never know...My arrangement comprises two verses and a Coda, but either verse could be repeated to make an even longer performance piece.There are suggested dynamics which make the piece come alive.(I have also published a version for guitar quartet)I hope you enjoy playing this piece!
