New Zealand-based music teacher and folk music compiler Neil Colquhoun claimed to have collected the song around 1966 from one F. R. Woods. Woods, who was in his 80s at the time, had allegedly heard the song from his uncle. it was attributed to one D.H. Rogers. It has been speculated that Rogers was the uncle of Woods and that Rogers had worked as a teenage pirate or shore whaler in the early-to-mid 19th century, composing this and another song in his later years and eventually passing them on to his nephew as an old man. Nathan Evers recorded the work in 2021 during the COVID pandemic and it became a viral sensation with house-bound Tik-Tokers sparking a whole re-introduction of sea shanties in what was termed Shanty-Tok. This string quartet arrangement gives all instruments a chance at the melody, and adds the affectation of a foot-stomp and a shout at the ends of verses. The history of whaling in New Zealand stretches from the late eighteenth century to 1965. In 1831, the British-born Weller brothers Edward, George, and Joseph, who had emigrated to Sydney in 1829, founded a whaling station at Otakou near modern Dunedin in the South Island of New Zealand, seventeen years before Dunedin was established. The Weller brothers had on their voyage to New Zealand brought in the 'Lucy Ann' (the Weller brothers' barque) a good deal of rum and a good deal of gunpowder. From 1833, the Weller brothers sold provisions to whalers in New Zealand from their base at Otakou, which they had named Otago in approximation of the local MÄori pronunciation. The song's lyrics describe a whaling ship called the Billy o' Tea [Note: a billy is a pot in which water is boiled to make tea or coffee] and its hunt for a right whale. The song describes how the ship's crew hope for a wellerman to arrive and bring them supplies of luxuries. According to the song's listing on the website New Zealandfolk Song, the workers at these bay-whaling stations (shore whalers) were not paid wages, they were paid in slops (ready made clothing), spirits and tobacco. The chorus continues with the crew singing of their confidence that the tonguin' will be the last step of their plight. Tonguing in this context refers to the practice of cutting strips of whale blubber to render into oil. Subsequent verses detail the captain's determination to bring in the whale in question, even as time passes and the quartet of whaling boats is lost in the fight. In the last verse, the narrator conveys how the Billy o' Tea is still considered locked in an ongoing struggle with the whale, with the wellerman making his regular call to strengthen the captain and crew. The Basler Fasnacht, known locally in Basel Stadt (CH) as D’ drey scheenschte Dääg (the three loveliest days), is a world-famous carnival where the Zeitgeist animates centuries of tradition. Local folks celebrate together with a good-humoured satire of current events through costumes, masks, poetry and visual art on carnival floats and lanterns. Amongst many other activities, participants decorate the city and open ad-hoc bars to sustain everyone with drinks and characteristic foods, all of which led to the Basler Fasnacht being included on the Unesco Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. Central to the whole experience is the music played on the streets, without electronic amplification, by two types of group: Gugge, with brass and percussion and Clique, with piccolos and side-drums made and played according to local custom. Symphonie Fastnachtique, part 1 contains four melodies from the Cliques: Der Arabi Nr 1, 2 and 3, followed by the Wettstein Marsch by Swiss composer Hermann Huber (1870-1926). The melodies in Der Arabi may sound familiar but the chances are that they pre-date their more famous versions. For example, Der Arabi Nr 1 is now better known as The British Grenadiers from the early 1700s but can be traced as far back as the 1560s, when the Basler Fasncacht was already centuries old and the Schweizerpfeife (Swiss Flute), with drums, supplied the de rigueur regimental music for foot-soldiers all over Europe. This version for string quartet is a mixture of original piccolo voicings and indulgence by the arranger. Some of the part for viola is based on an optional 4th voice, the Zierstimm. Fasnacht is a glorious celebration laced with a melancholy reflected by the marching tempi of the Cliques: often slower than 90 BPM. A standard march is around 120 BPM. Vyyl Gniege! (Enjoy!)

The music of pianist-composer Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944) was highly popular in her lifetime, but mostly neglected afterward. It is fortunately now being rediscovered. Her character pieces, of which she wrote many, display charm and wit, with elegant French romantic sensibility. This set of arrangements for string quartet includes includes selected works composed between 1887 and 1910. It begins with two excerpts from her ballet suite Callirhoë for piano, Pas des Amphores and Pas des écharpes (Scarf Dance), followed by Idylle, from a set of 6 Romances sans Paroles. The next piece, Chanson Russe (Russian Song), if it isn’t based on an actual folksong, is a clever imitation. The set concludes with the gently uplifting Romance in D major. CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. He is a free lance professional violist and violinist specializing in chamber music, who began making string quartet and trio arrangements for wedding, party and corporate events, to expand the repertory or to improve on existing versions. Selections include unusual pieces by both familiar and lesser-known composers, plus standard classical and popular favorites. The goal is to produce high-quality, musically satisfying arrangements faithful to the composer’s original material, yet sight-readable in most cases by working professionals or intermediate to advanced students. It was named by Abel Tasman on the 30th November 1642, when a storm forced his ship out to sea before he could anchor there. He did return there in later days. Throughout its history it has seen indigenous people in their canoes and famous explorers such as Abel Tasman, Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne , Bruni d'Entrecasteaux, William Bligh, Matthew Flinders, James Kelly and James Cook sail its waves. In colonial times whalers could also be seen trying to make their fortune. In more recent times local sailors, including those in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race try and win over one of nature’s more challenging waterways. This piece is a tribute to them, and the songs that would have been sung by sailors in the bygone era.

The text in brackets in Serbo-Croatian means: The scene of ÄurÄ‘evdan on the river, a description of a ÄurÄ‘evdan celebration on a river in the movie Time of the Gypsies where that song was used. It is brief and rich with variety, and it involves a technique of mine called fracturing (see note* below). This causes the dissonance you'll hear in parts of this work.On one occasion, when I felt stressed, I enjoyed listening to Morton Feldman's String Quartet II (1983), which lasts about 6 hours. This quiet but lovely music soothed and pacified me. On the other hand, if you want something to energize and alert you in less than 11 minutes, this quartet may be for you -- whenever you acquire a recording of it by some lucky quartet ensemble. Have a cup of coffee with it, for insurance!In the meantime, enjoy the audio sample, Movement I of my quartet. This alone may suffice to get you going, in only two and a half minutes. String Quartet - William and Mary: Four movements, total time 10:45: I. Allegro moderato (2:32) A tango-like dance movement: Preface, Introduction, A, B, A’, C, Coda (two variations). II. Lento (2:44) Counting to twenty in 5-4, 4-4, and 12-8 time. 5-4 time predominates (five groups of four measures each), then 4-4 (two groups of five measures each) and 12-8 (one group of five measures). Throughout there are 72 counts per minute, with quarter notes counted in the 5-4 and 4-4 time signatures, and with dotted quarter notes counted in the 12-8 time signature. The five measures of 12-8 also introduce the theme for movement III.Fun with three different time signatures! III. Allegro (2:11) Variations on a Scottish-like folk tune and fragments of it. One variation is an example of tonal pointillism. The closing measures are an extended coda based on a transformed version of the original tune. IV. Swing (3:18) West Coast swing tempo for the Introduction and Part A; triple swing tempo for Part B. Note* on the fracturing technique This is my method to produce systematically new types of dissonance and corresponding modifications and resolutions. Fracturing consists of changing pitches in a melody or chord as follows: (a) Decide on the root note position within the staff or line of music. (b) Represent the applicable chord in half-step notation, with the root given the value 0. (c) Alternatively subtract and add a prescribed number of half steps from, and to, each successive number in the annotated chord (except for the root). (d) Use the new fractured annotation to define the new pitches. The actual or implied root of the chord (tonal center) remains unchanged. The resulting new chord or melody is thus related or resolvable to the parent tonal harmony or chord. Fracturing appears mainly in the first and third movements, with spare use in the second and fourth movements.
