My specific task from the Hudson Commission was to concentrate music based on the natural habitat and beauty of the Hudson as well as on the time of the first European settlers. It was natural for me to think about old-time fiddling in this light. In 1909 Washington Irving described the Catskill Mountains as a dismembered branch of the Appalachian Mountains. My own Dutch ancestors settled in the Hudson Valley in the early 1600â€™s, and eventually traveled down the Appalachians to settle in the South in the early 1800â€™s. The old-time fiddling that dominated those areas along that route is the musical language utilized in creating this String Quartet.For the musical genesis of the Quartet, I initially created phrases from the fiddle that were molded out of old-time fiddling tradition. With technical twists and turns, the phrases became unique and new but all the while still connected to the tradition. It is these phrases that I used as material to create the String Quartet. Through the process of composing, techniques such as re- harmonization, development, canonic applications spill over each other like the Hudson tributaries in the Adirondacks. The counterpoint of the Quartet invigorates and establishes itself. The result is a wholly participating body emphasizing transitions from the traditional to the contemporary in sound and style. The music here is no longer fiddle music as the inventions of the quartet embarks on a new story, a new way to play, and with a new musical idea to put forward. Sir Edward Elgarâ€™s compositional output was prolific, with many well-known pieces, including the Pomp & Circumstance marches, Dream of Gerontius, and of course, the Engima Variations. Elgarâ€™s legacy has been widely debated, but there is no doubt of his influence on â€˜Englishâ€™ music and composers such as Ralph Vaughan Williams, but also further afield, on composers as diverse as Richard Strauss, Jean Sibelius, and Igor Stravinsky. Along with a central theme woven and varied throughout the work, each movement of Engima Variations is also a musical illustration, based on a family member or close friend of Elgar, and indeed Elgar himself. He dedicated the work â€œto my friends pictured withinâ€. â€œNimrodâ€ is the name given to the ninth movement, based on Elgarâ€™s editor and publisher, Augustus J, Jaeger. Musically, there is an obvious hint at the 2nd movement of Beethovenâ€™s Piano Sonata Pathetique, but beyond this there are beautiful legato lines spread across the whole ensemble and a wide variety of timbral, dynamic, and tempo colourations. â€œNimrodâ€ has become a popular piece as a standalone item â€“ often featuring in funerals, memorial services, and other solemn events such as Remembrance Sunday. Hans Zimmer also adapts the piece for use in the score for the 2017 film Dunkirk, and has become a standard tune to represent stoic â€˜Britishnessâ€™. This string quartet movement is the first of three which can be played separately or as a set. The others are titled Breathing and Drama, also available here. Moving Between requires a modicum of theatrical movement / gestures by the players. Composed in 2010, Moving Between has its origins in the abstract thinking which characterized some of my earlier pieces such as DiasynthÃ¨se for piano or Chromatalea for small ensemble. A fuller title may have been Moving Between Extremes, as it deals with the contrast between monody (unaccompanied melody) and the simultaneous sounding of different pitches (harmony). Transforming one of these extreme types of texture into the other is achieved in a number of ways. There are areas where such a transformation is taking place; however, quite often a texture arrived at remains the same for some time. The piece has the potential to evolve further along its own free-wheeling path.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q49206). It is not a coincidence that many composers seem to have written some of their most important and meaningful works for the string quartet. I grew up listening to string quartets, especially those by Beethoven and BartÃ³k, and those works have had a tremendous impact on what I am as a composer, musician and as a human being. In many of my works one can see some sort of a journey from darkness toward the light, in various forms. In the case of my String Quartet this journey is exceptionally arduous. There is an element of hope in some sections of the third movement, but the hope it offers is more of an otherworldly nature. In the beginning of the fourth movement the very dramatic elements of the beginning of the quartet return. Just at the point, when the listener thinks that the darker elements will ultimately prevail, the music reaches an important turning point. Through a heroic, dissonant struggle it reaches the finale, which is full of ecstasy and instrumental joy. I have given the finale, along with the metronome marking, the indication Con fuoco allâ€™UnghareseÂ - all this of course as a homage to the great Hungarian master, one of my greatest musical heroes already since the very early days of my life.Â (Olli Mustonen).
