Carson Turner&rsquo.s latest instalment to The Schott String Quartet Series is a wonderful collection of traditional Irish folk tunes. These intermediate-level arrangements make perfect performance material.

With the first books in the series focusing on baroque, classical and romantic styles, The Schott String Quartet Series has expanded to cover music ranging from traditional pieces through to Eastern-influenced works. Aside from 'Indian Summer', which features original compositions, each book contains original arrangements of well known themes, which have often never been arranged for string quartet before. .
An important characteristic of these arrangements is that they allow all four instruments to demand the attention throughout the music. The pieces are suitable for amateur musicians or school students and are ideal for public performance.

Mathilde is my second string quartet, taking inspiration from the words of poet Euan Tait. It tells the story of Mathilde Schoenberg, her husband Arnold and the love of her life, painter Richard Gerstl. The quartet opens with Mathilde's loneliness, with joy and then love entering the music as Richard enters her life. The central movement is a love song between the two lovers. It ends in tragedy as their love is discovered and the final lament is reminiscent of Dido's great lament for her lost love. The quartet parts interweave and play with each other. The big melodies are shared between the parts and the dramatic moments capture the audience. Written in a polymodal style, the seven movements carry the listener from dullness, through ecstatic love to the mourning of a great loss. Mathilde's voice is brought to life by a soprano, adding to the rich texture of the quartet. Mathilde was commissioned by Pat Halling and premiered by his Quartet Promusica on 26 September 2018. This instrumental setting of Bon Iver's "Holocene" will be an excellent addition to your quartet's gig book. The first violin gracefully drifts in and out of Justin Vernon's haunting melodies, while role of the acoustic guitar ostinato from the album version is filled by a 2-part pizzicato figure between Violin 2 and Viola, enabling your string quartet to perform this chart without the need for any additional musicians or tracks.

Extended techniques including chopping and artificial harmonics are used to emulate the unique production style of Bon Iver's recording. While not the flashiest or most technically dazzling chart in my catalog, this tune will give your ensemble a great opportunity to vibe out, settle into the groove, and provide pleasant ambience to events such as:

Three movements of beautiful polymodal writing, with rich counterpoint and soaring melodies. The opening movement has a dance-like theme, yet with dark overtones. The central slow movement has a haunting tune played in turn by the first violin, viola and cello. The final movement is fast and jolly. Throughout the piece, the four instruments are in conversation, passing thematic material between them, with exciting rhythmic interplay. This is an arrangement for String Quartet of several of the most beloved Black Spirituals: Wade in the Water, Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child, Deep River, My Lord Delivered Daniel, and Bamboula. This instrumental setting preserves the energy and warmth of the original. Expose your students to this important style of American Music.
