Hey fiddlers, One thing we know about old Scottish folk tunes is they never grow old, and even though we may never know who first wrote the delightful melody, “The Corrie Man,†we can tell from its lilting qualities—with its cheerful and spirited flow—that it brings to us images of the u-shaped valleys that are so familiar to the highlands of Scotland. We can easily imagine playing this traditional session tune among the rolling hills and farmlands of Scotland where musicians gather in their favorite places to play—near a tree or brook, on a farmhouse porch, in a sitting room or even in the kitchen.  Not to mention the casual setting of a pub where friends gather to raise a pint and sit in a big circle with an array of other fiddlers and musicians, playing tunes side-by-side enjoying each other’s company! With this backdrop our cellist Genevieve dedicated her time to arrange this artful reel for string quartet as part of our debut album, after which she had the wonderful opportunity to visit Scotland to study and perform with Alisdair Fraser and Natalie Haas, who inspired her to be a part of the rich tradition of preserving and performing Scottish folk music.We hope you will find that same inspiration while playing this piece with your friends and colleagues as much as we do.  It’s always a favorite showstopper!Slà inte Mhath (Cheers)ATLYS.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CMF186). 9 x 12 in inches.The creation of Rustic Serenade was quite different from the majority of my other compositions; it happened quite by accident with absolutely no thought out plan. I always carry manuscript paper with me to jot down melodies and other musical thoughts that pop into my head but never an entire piece of music. The following is how that all changed.Being an avid hiker, I set out one early autumn day. It was one of those wonderfully crisp, clear days that only New England offers. As I rounded a bend of the forested mountain trail there was a stony promontory that offered an unparalleled view of the valley below with its rolling pastures and farmlands and, still more distant, a waterfall. I followed the narrow ribbon of water with my eye as it twisted and wove its way through the trees and periodic meadows until I found myself gazing down onto a small village. Actually, it was more like a tiny hamlet, a few homes, two or three stone buildings, a small white church, a commons complete with bandstand and gardens and a mill with its waterwheel slowly spinning from the water that was diverted through a sluice from the river. As I continued to observe the scene below I became cognizant that within my mind I was hearing the soft pizzicato of a cello. It was soon followed by a viola in imitation and then finally the violins joined in, first with melody and then harmony. The solution was to extract the manuscript paper and pen from my backpack and write down what I heard.

But it was the Glenn Miller version that grabbed the public’s attention, becoming almost the soundtrack to the Second World War. In the Mood has never lost its appeal and has been recognised as culturally significant by the Library of Congress. In 1951 In the Mood became the first piece of music to be played by a computer.This arrangement of In the Mood is written with accessibility in mind, transposing the original from Ab to G Major. This work was written between January and March 1997. It has thirteen short continuous movements, one for each note of the tone row and a resolution of the row into an adagio movement in C major. The movements are written in a time signature beginning with one beat to a bar and ending in 13 beats to a bar until the final section of the last movement. The number of bars for each movement is in multiples of 13, then 14 and onwards to 25. The harmonic language is dictated by the combinations of notes in the original row combining with a row with its inversions and retrogrades begun from the first note of each new section. The sections may be briefly summarised as follows:- 1. Adagio A basic statement of the row with its inversion and retrograde 2. Con brio A rhythmic miniature scherzo and trio 3. Allegretto Dynamic contrasts using pizzicato and glissando 4. Andante piacevole e mesto Aduet between the violins with accompaniment from the viola and 'cello 5. Agitato An atmospheric spiccato section interrupted by foot-stamping 6. Andante languido A barcarolle-like section with passages of col legno 7. Allegro A rhythmic section contrasted by passages in harmonics 8. Tempo di tango presto The tango is apt to slip into many of the composer's pieces, even where nominally 12-tone, and is never remotely serious! 9. Andante pastorale Another atmospheric section but more relaxed 10. Allegro molto A scherzando section using rhythmic retrogrades 11. Allegretto The music begins to pull into feeling of tonality around C 12. Allegro moderato This process continues with tremolandi and glissandi searching for the way to a diatonic C major 13.
