Famously adapted by Simon and Garfunkel with the words I'd rather be a hammer than a nail the origins of this melody are traced back to the Peruvian Andes. It was also used by the composer Daniel AlomÃa Robles in a Zarzuela in 1913. Nowadays the song is played by Andean pipe flute ensembles in tourist spots all over the world.

A number of popular vocal versions have been recorded, but it is more often performed as an instrumental. The composition started out as a rag but is nowadays played as a part of the Dixieland jazz repertoire. The song has been recorded by numerous artists and is considered a jazz standard. Its verses are simple and naive praising the life in sertão. Sertão is a Portuguese word for hinterlands, countryside or outback. It was originally a coco under the title Engenho de Humaitá (Humaitá's mill). Catulo da Paixão Cearense argued to be the unique composer of the song, however, nowadays the credit is given to João Pernambuco (1883-1947). Maan korvessa kulkevi lapsosen tie is a traditional Finnish religious song, with a text that tells a story about a guardian angel protecting a child on a way home. The text originates from 1884, written by Immi Hellén and it is set to a melody by P.J. Hannikainen in 1898. It was accepted to the Finnish hymnal in 2016, and is known nowadays as the hymn number 971.This arrangement has an introduction that lasts for 25 measures, and has altogether three verses. The arrangement can be sung or played, used in a service or as an independent performance. Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep is a famous prayer all over the christian world; in Finland the prayer was translated in 1860, and set to a song Levolle lasken luojani by Sofie Lithenius in 1895. In the Finnish official hymnal it is nowadays known as the hymn number 563, with the title Ilta on tullut, Luojani.This arrangement reflects the original Finnish melody's minor mood, and has some chromaticism and a couple of pedal points to sustain the chromatic tensions in the arrangement. GREEK LIFE RONDO String 4tet Based on ancient tunes about Greek life.The lively Food Market song (I'll buy you a rooster) forms the refrain.Paraponiariko moy (Don't be unhappy, little one) is a short melody I found, with a scale I cannot name but very sad.Kariotikos from Ikaria is a slow or accelerating dance with some singing, often seen at weddings, in a flexible mode (partly phrygian).I entered the vineyard (Pour love over me) is related to Solomon's Song. I could only find about 6 bars of this melody: the rest is mine. Aeolian mode.Lullaby: this lovely melody uses the Hitzaz scale, which is common in Greek regions and found in Africa, North America and Spain.Hymn for Matins: this is the oldest Greek Orthodox chant I can find. It is from the 13th C Sticherarion and printed in modern notation in JISOCM Vol 4 (2), p357. Nowadays, chanting there is often a solo, often by a woman, but I believe parallel organum was heard in Greece from the 16th C. Modern services include 4- part hymns. I present all three styles.Song of the Dead Brothers is a complex 9th C Byzantine mourning poem which has since been set to music many times. (The nine brothers died.) I found this phrygian setting from Karystos.

Pachelbel's Canon Pachelbel's Canon is, in fact, the traditional title for a composition by the German composer Johann Pachelbel. Other names for the work include namely: Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo, Canon and Gigue in D, and of course Canon in D. We do not know when or why in particular it was written. The oldest copy is surprisingly from the 19th century. It is important to realize that it was a common routine for organists to practice improvisation on the chord progression underlying the canon. Pachelbel originally scored the Canon notably for three violins and continuo. He also in fact paired the Canon with a gigue. The movements are homotonal, to clarify, both are in the key of D major. History In due time, Pachelbel's Canon went out of style and remained in virtual oblivion for centuries. The Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra, however, recorded an arrangement of it in 1968. As a result, it gained approval. Many ensembles began likewise to record the piece in the 1970s and by the 1980s became ubiquitous as background music. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, pop songs correspondingly used elements of the piece. The chord progression, in particular, was used this way. Also, since the 1980s, it has been not only wildly popular for weddings, but also for funeral ceremonies in the USA and Europe. Pachelbel Background Johann Pachelbel (1653 –1706) was a German composer, as well as an organist. He was furthermore instrumental in bringing the south German organ school to its apex. He wrote a large body of music, both sacred and, equally important, secular. In particular, he uniquely helped develop the chorale prelude and fugue. For this, he has, in fact, earned a rightful place in the company of the most significant composers of the mid-Baroque period. Works Pachelbel's music was certainly popular. With this in mind, he also consequently had many pupils. His music expressly developed into a model for south German composers. Nowadays, Pachelbel is most famous, particularly for the Canon in D, as well as the F minor Chaconne, the Toccata in E minor, and of course the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of variations for the keyboard. Influences Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Caspar Kerll were south German composers who significantly influenced Pachelbel. Furthermore, he was especially influenced by Italians such as Frescobaldi and Poglietti. He frequently preferred an articulate, simple contrapuntal style that highlighted clarity. His music is markedly less extravagant and harmonically adventurous than that of Dieterich Buxtehude. However, as a point often overlooked, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different instrumental combinations in his chamber music. Legacy All in all, Pachelbel was most famous as a composer for the keyboard. He composed over two hundred pieces specifically for the instrument. Pachelbel was also surprisingly a prolific composer of vocal music. All in all, about a hundred vocal works survive, including 40 or so large-scale works.
