Published by Paul Emil Levasseur (A0.1014185). 'Journey' is a c.a. 12 minute work for String Quartet. The piece begins with an adagio melody which weaves into elegant counterpoint. The adagio opening is juxtaposed by a scherzo with a folk style melody and bouncing, changing rhythms. The two musical ideas collide and combine in the conclusion of the work! I began this piece in the beginning of my D.M.A. in composition when studying with Christos Hatzis. The material for this project has steeped in my mind for 5 years with over 100 drafts and rewrites to date. It really represents a period of struggle in my development as an artist. During this time I was trying to reconcile the struggle between my knowledge of composition and theory with my muse. The difference between putting notes together and creating art is an interesting one and this was something I had to come to terms with. After my 2nd year of study, I put this project on the shelf and carried on with other pieces. I didn't pull it out again until last Dec where there was a short pause in my workload with freelancing. I kept the material I wanted and just 'listened' to where the music wanted to go. Somehow the pieces came together and it worked to create a cohesive whole with a strong musical narrative. I'm very pleased with the result. The piece has not been performed yet but I have included a midi mockup to aide with score reading the piece.

Approximate Duration: 6' 15This piece is inspired by the 1925 poem by T.S. Eliot, The Hollow Men. The piece utilizes serialism inspired techniques in order to better demonstrate the time period and subject matter of the poem. The juxtaposition of very high and very low notes emphasizes the hollow nature of the poem and furthers it with a sense of misdirection. This is done by taking recurring parts and flipping them backwards, cutting twelve-tone rows in half and putting them in two different instruments, and by having interjections that resemble the impressionist period that came before. The end of the piece quotes the nursery rhyme Here We Go ‘Round the Mulberry Bush in a sort of dark, twisted way, much like The Hollow Men poem does. The ending is morphed to fit a very hollow feeling and to convey the final lines of the poem: This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends Not with a bang but a whimper.rogerramirezmusic.com

The famous Corta-jaca, the name with which the Gaucho tango became popular, is one of the most recorded and known songs by Chiquinha Gonzaga, alongside Ó abre alas, Lua Branca and Atraente. He was born on the stages of musical theaters, where he was danced in the final scene of the burlesque operetta of national customs Zizinha Maxixe, imitated from French by an anonymous author, performed at Teatro Éden Lavradio, in August 1895. Actor Machado Careca (José Machado Pinheiro e Costa ), anonymous author of the play, ended up putting verses in Corta-jaca's music, helping to popularize it, especially after its version was recorded on disk by the duo Os Geraldos. Throughout history, Corta-jaca attended other stages and repertoires: coffee-singers, beer-beauties, choro circles… But it was at the Palácio do Catete, in 1914, that it reached its glory. Performed on the guitar by First Lady Nair de Teffé, it caused political scandal and ended up calling the administration Hermes da Fonseca. The reaction can be measured by the impassioned speech that Senator Rui Barbosa delivered from the gallery. When inquiring what the cut-jaca that he had heard so much about is, he concludes: “The lowest, the most foul, the rudest of all wild dances, the twin sister of batuque, cateretê and samba. But at presidential receptions, the cut-jaca is performed with all the honors of Wagner's music, and we don't want the conscience of this country to revolt, our faces redden and the youth to laugh!†Never before in the history of Brazil has eminently popular music been performed in the seat of government, in front of the diplomatic corps and the country's elite. Corta-jaca became a classic of the great repertoire of Brazilian instrumental music, deserving recordings, among others, by Abel Ferreira, Altamiro Carrilho, Antonio Adolfo, Artur Moreira Lima, Clara Sverner, Conjunto Regional do Donga, Eudóxia de Barros, Guio de Morais, Itamar Assieré, Leandro Braga, Marcus Viana, Maria Teresa Madeira, Marcelo Verzoni, Paulo Moura, Radamés Gnatalli, Rosária Gatti, Talitha Peres, TurÃbio Santos, numerous bands and some sung versions. Naji Hakim Die Taube (The Dove) was commissioned by â€Kirchenmusik bei St. Anna Augsburg†to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the Augsburger Religionsfrieden (Religious peace of Augsburg). It is based on three biblical verses related to peace : Gen. 8/11, Luk. 1/79, Joh. 14/27. The music is through composed and develops the character of the verses with contrasted string textures, putting in relief the expressive vocal line, declamation of light and happiness. The work exists in three versions : 1. for Tenor and string quartet, 2. for Tenor and string orchestra, 3. for Tenor and organ. First performance : by Robert Sellier, Tenor, Capella St. Anna Streichquartett, St. Anna Augsburg, Festkonzert zum Hohen Friedensfest, 8 August 2005. Gen.8/11 : â€And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off. †Luk. 1/79 : â€To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. †Joh.14/27 : â€Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. †...to guide our feet into the way of peace. (Luke 1,79) Words and music bind people together to form fellowships which guide us into the way of peace. Singing or playing together combine bodies and souls, so that our rhythm and breathing becomes one - a sense of belonging to one another is created which instils the very nature of peace. So it is that by becoming an integral part of the music, our feet are guided 'into the way of peace'. In Luke chapter 1, both Maria and Zechariah are carried away, body and soul, in hymns of thanksgiving. They let God´s melody resound in their bodies. Ignatius, one of the Early Fathers of the Church, might have drawn his inspiration from them when he wrote to the Christians of Ephesus around the year 100, Let God´s melody resound in you. The melody of our life is a single voice within God´s great melody; an everlasting celestial melody, in which we join together as integral parts - with time, we are gradually shown which chords we are given to touch and which chords to form with one another. God´s inextinguishable melody has an infinite galaxy of variations. As you would know, a variation is rooted but limitless. At our christening, God gives us a variation - an inextinguishable variation because of his promise, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matthew 28, 20). Deeply rooted as we are, God leads us through. He calls us to Life out of His Eternity, He lets his melody reverberate in us and finally calls us back, when we die, to His everlasting future.
