The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up. is a reminder to artists to capture the relaxed and naïve state of mind of children whose artistic approaches are not yet informed and diluted by the wisdom of years and the expectations of craft. When the normally informed and trained mind can retreat into a more relaxed and naïve state, the results can surprise and sparkle. Andante for String Quartet (Scintillare) captures a childlike, yet informed state of mind, a rare occurrence where music seems to be the only way to depict the liberating feeling. Scored for traditional string quartet, this short four-minute work was written for an advanced or professional ensemble needing repertoire for educational concerts in k-12 school venues. It's a highly accessible work with a lot of flourish, but still retaining elements of craft, for those in the audience that appreciate string quartet music on a more studied level. This work can also be used by school-aged (16-19 years-old) ensembles who have two advanced violinists paired up with a texturally supportive violist of intermediate ability who doesn't mind the occasional interspersed solo fill, and a rhythmically solid cellist, who will not have a technically difficult part, but still has a very important foundational role to play.

I have always been a fan of the Arabic style of music, so I wrote the piece incorporating parts of the Arabic style, while mixing in some aspects of classical harmony. Schott Music - Digital #Q6173. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6173). My 2nd string quartet is one single slow movement. The piece does not directly reflect Joseph Haydn's Seven Last Words but I would not have been able to write it without knowing that work. The movements in Haydn's quartets (except the final earthquake) are slow movements of shocking forcefulness. What makes the work even more unsettling for me is the relaxed and cheerful acceptance of death (the 'smile' of the A major pizzicato thirds!). When I made myself familiar with the subject matter of crucifixion I discovered that terms like 'walking' and 'the last walk' were most important to me. My piece starts at the final stage of this experience. It contains a number of lost sounds, phrases of futility which come from nowhere and lead to nowhere. The horrifying rubbing and sanding of skin and wood become the 'theme’ of the piece which is combined with tonal, choral-like melodies. I am interested in how to make noises no longer symbolize desolation and tonal phrases no longer represent confidence. - Jörg Widmann.

This work was written between January and March 1997. It has thirteen short continuous movements, one for each note of the tone row and a resolution of the row into an adagio movement in C major. The movements are written in a time signature beginning with one beat to a bar and ending in 13 beats to a bar until the final section of the last movement. The number of bars for each movement is in multiples of 13, then 14 and onwards to 25. The harmonic language is dictated by the combinations of notes in the original row combining with a row with its inversions and retrogrades begun from the first note of each new section. The sections may be briefly summarised as follows:- 1. Adagio A basic statement of the row with its inversion and retrograde 2. Con brio A rhythmic miniature scherzo and trio 3. Allegretto Dynamic contrasts using pizzicato and glissando 4. Andante piacevole e mesto Aduet between the violins with accompaniment from the viola and 'cello 5. Agitato An atmospheric spiccato section interrupted by foot-stamping 6. Andante languido A barcarolle-like section with passages of col legno 7. Allegro A rhythmic section contrasted by passages in harmonics 8. Tempo di tango presto The tango is apt to slip into many of the composer's pieces, even where nominally 12-tone, and is never remotely serious! 9. Andante pastorale Another atmospheric section but more relaxed 10. Allegro molto A scherzando section using rhythmic retrogrades 11. Allegretto The music begins to pull into feeling of tonality around C 12. Allegro moderato This process continues with tremolandi and glissandi searching for the way to a diatonic C major 13. Published by Adrian Gagiu (A0.1004707). String Quartet No. 1 in A minor, op. 12 (1999), a cyclic composition in Neo-Classical style, partly influenced by Romanian folk music, Shostakovich and Bartok. Its compositional language, while not avant-garde and not exceedingly difficult, might help students with some aspects of modern music and liberties taken with classical forms. The first movement (Larghetto - Allegro non troppo) presents first dramatically and mysteriously the core motifs and themes of the entire composition, followed by a surprisingly relaxed sonata movement in the relative key of C major. The following Scherzo (Allegro assai), in E major, plays humorously and vigorously with derived motifs, and the third movement (Adagio assai), in F sharp minor, is treated in variations on the Romanian Christmas carol La Vitleem colo jos ('Down at Bethlehem'). The dramatic and expanding sonata form of the fourth movement (Allegro con brio - Larghetto) returns finally to the A minor of the introduction, then dissolving into the transcendent, slow coda. This composition is a premiere, speculative, yet as faithful as possible embodiment of all of Beethoven’s sketches for his String Quintet in C major, Hess 41 (WoO 62), as they have been left by the composer. The usefulness and integrity of more or less hypothetical completions of sketches by great composers remains from case to case controversial. Due to the paucity of the sketches for the aim of attempting a true reconstruction, the present composition in no way falls within such category. It is obviously quite different from what Beethoven himself would have produced if he had lived more, also due to the fact that he usually transformed his preliminary sketches substantially during the compositional process. However, there are some of his frequent, subtle thematic relationships between the sketches for the Quintet movements, and probably some features in the sketches would have been kept in the completed composition. The four-movement design hypothesized by Martin Staehelin and others, as well as other retrospective or relaxed features in the sketches may be a result of a still early stage of the compositional process, or perhaps an indicator of a fourth, neoclassical creative period, together with Op. 135 and the new Finale for Op. 130.To generate a continuity draft of the Quintet, all of Beethoven’s sketches for it were used, with the addition of several ones from the same context within the respective sketchbook and which could be related to the identified Quintet sketches: some sketches are clearly labeled as being for the Quintet, while others are thematically related or written down close to them. With the possible exception of bars 75-94 and 136-155 in movement II (which are variations on the theme) and bars 140-145 in movement IV (which fill in the blank bars in the sketch with a progression based on it), virtually every bar of this composition includes the notes from the sketches in at least one of the instruments. Some of those notes were subject to transpositions and adaptations to fit the formal design, and to editorial choices for the unclear pitches and duration in the sketches.This publication includes the score, parts and continuity draft, the latter being marked with the sources in the sketches for each passage.Total duration: 33 minutes.
