Strand (A0.970731). By Mike Strand, ASCAP I wrote this String Quartet in a composition class at the College of William and Mary in 2010. It is brief and rich with variety, and it involves a technique of mine called fracturing (see note* below). This causes the dissonance you'll hear in parts of this work.On one occasion, when I felt stressed, I enjoyed listening to Morton Feldman's String Quartet II (1983), which lasts about 6 hours. This quiet but lovely music soothed and pacified me. On the other hand, if you want something to energize and alert you in less than 11 minutes, this quartet may be for you -- whenever you acquire a recording of it by some lucky quartet ensemble. Have a cup of coffee with it, for insurance!In the meantime, enjoy the audio sample, Movement I of my quartet. This alone may suffice to get you going, in only two and a half minutes. String Quartet - William and Mary: Four movements, total time 10:45: I. Allegro moderato (2:32) A tango-like dance movement: Preface, Introduction, A, B, A’, C, Coda (two variations). II. Lento (2:44) Counting to twenty in 5-4, 4-4, and 12-8 time. 5-4 time predominates (five groups of four measures each), then 4-4 (two groups of five measures each) and 12-8 (one group of five measures). Throughout there are 72 counts per minute, with quarter notes counted in the 5-4 and 4-4 time signatures, and with dotted quarter notes counted in the 12-8 time signature. The five measures of 12-8 also introduce the theme for movement III.Fun with three different time signatures! III. Allegro (2:11) Variations on a Scottish-like folk tune and fragments of it. Published by Diamond S Music (A0.1086056). I wanted to write something that was fairly simplistic and calm - In harmony, chords, textures and ideas. The beginning is just a rocking back and forth between an E flat major chord to a C major chord although neither are in root position. Above this chordal ostinato the Solo Violin soars on several different modes and has an interesting quintuplet rhythm against the accompaniment. In the second part the upper voices rock back and forth to mostly major triads above a pizzicato cello. The fourth section introduces a compound meter feel (triplets) and melodic fragments that is volleyed from part to part. The fifth section has the upper strings on a glassy harmonic that mirrors the opening rocking chords. This time a Solo cello takes the melody in a high tessitura. The next section echos the second section but is transposed a third lower. The transition expires a rocking back and between the E flat major and E flat minor obstinato before settling in on a bookend of the opening with a ever so slightly extended ending. Naji Hakim Die Taube (The Dove) was commissioned by â€Kirchenmusik bei St. Anna Augsburg†to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the Augsburger Religionsfrieden (Religious peace of Augsburg). It is based on three biblical verses related to peace : Gen. 8/11, Luk. 1/79, Joh. 14/27. The music is through composed and develops the character of the verses with contrasted string textures, putting in relief the expressive vocal line, declamation of light and happiness. The work exists in three versions : 1. for Tenor and string quartet, 2. for Tenor and string orchestra, 3. for Tenor and organ. First performance : by Robert Sellier, Tenor, Capella St. Anna Streichquartett, St. Anna Augsburg, Festkonzert zum Hohen Friedensfest, 8 August 2005. In Luke chapter 1, both Maria and Zechariah are carried away, body and soul, in hymns of thanksgiving. They let God´s melody resound in their bodies. Ignatius, one of the Early Fathers of the Church, might have drawn his inspiration from them when he wrote to the Christians of Ephesus around the year 100, Let God´s melody resound in you. The melody of our life is a single voice within God´s great melody; an everlasting celestial melody, in which we join together as integral parts - with time, we are gradually shown which chords we are given to touch and which chords to form with one another. God´s inextinguishable melody has an infinite galaxy of variations. As you would know, a variation is rooted but limitless. At our christening, God gives us a variation - an inextinguishable variation because of his promise, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matthew 28, 20). Deeply rooted as we are, God leads us through. He calls us to Life out of His Eternity, He lets his melody reverberate in us and finally calls us back, when we die, to His everlasting future. Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella (French: Un flambeau, Jeannette, Isabelle) is a traditional Christmas carol originating from the Provence region of France. The carol dates back to the 17th century. It is associated with the tradition of children in Provence dressing as shepherds and milkmaids, carrying torches and candles to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve while singing the carol. The Carol tells the story of two milkmaids, Jeannette and Isabella, who discover the baby Jesus in a stable and run to inform the villagers, urging them to come quietly not to disturb the sleeping child. The song's melody is believed to have originated as a lively dance tune from as early as the 14th century, and French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier later adapted it for a drinking song. The lyrics were first associated with this melody in a collection of French carols in 1901, transcribed by Julien Tiersot. Edward Cuthbert Nunn made the most popular English adaptation in the late 19th century. Despite its historical roots and charming melody, Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella is considered one of the lesser-known carols outside of France. Still, it remains a beloved part of Christmas celebrations in the Provence region.
