Arranged for String Orchestra Tico-Tico no fubá (sparrow in the cornmeal, or, literally, rufous-collared sparrow in the cornmeal) is a Brazilian choro song written by Zequinha de Abreu in 1917. A great arrangement for your next performance, sure to be a big hit with your audience!Its original title was Tico-Tico no farelo (sparrow in the bran), but since Brazilian guitarist Américo Jacomino Canhoto (1889–1928) had a work with the same title, Abreu's work was given its present name in 1931, and sometime afterward Aloysio de Oliveira wrote the original Portuguese lyrics.Eros Volusia and her dancers dance to Tico-Tico in 1942 Rio Rita. Ethel Smith performed Tico-Tico onscreen in Bathing Beauty (1944). I didn’t seek to re-invent the wheel with this arrangement, but rather to capture some of its signature jazz combo swagger while fitting the signature lines & licks into string-friendly voicings. I did add an original intro & outro, which will give a bit more pizazz to your live performance than the fade out from Herbie’s original album version. The full chart includes written-out solos for each member of the quartet. I highly encourage improvising your own solos if you are comfortable, or even vamping one or more of the solo sections to really stretch out as you watch your next cocktail hour gig fly by! For a shorter (and significantly more lame…) performance, you can instead cut one or more of the solo sections from letter C thru F to save time. This arrangement makes use of modern extended string techniques in order to create a rhythmic foundation without the need for additional rhythm instruments, including chopping and ghost notes. If you are unfamiliar with these concepts, various resources exist all over the internet to aid you in your quest towards having better time. If you use neither, you may feel as if something is missing in your life that you just can’t pinpoint. Don’t worry, I’ll pinpoint it for you: BACKBEATS. One way or another, you need them. And I’ve given you multiple options here so if you can’t make this chart groove that’s on you… Performance time - approximately 5:00 for the full chart as written. As mentioned above, solo sections can be repeated with improv or cut without requiring significant chart changes, to adjust to the needs of your specific performance. Time After Time is the second single by American singer-songwriter Cyndi Lauper from her debut studio album, She's So Unusual(1983), with Rob Hyman (co-writer and founding member of the rock band The Hooters) contributing backing vocals. The track was produced by Rick Chertoff and released as a single on January 27, 1984. The song became Lauper's first number 1 hit in the U.S. The song was written in the album's final stages, after Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, She Bop and All Through the Night had been written. The writing began with the title, which Lauper had seen in TV Guide magazine, referring to the science fiction film Time After Time (1979).[2]Time After Time is composed of simple keyboard-synth chords, bright, jangly guitars, clock-ticking percussion, and elastic bassline. Lyrically, it is a love song of devotion. Music critics gave the song positive reviews, with many commending the song for being a solid and memorable love song. The famous Corta-jaca, the name with which the Gaucho tango became popular, is one of the most recorded and known songs by Chiquinha Gonzaga, alongside Ó abre alas, Lua Branca and Atraente. He was born on the stages of musical theaters, where he was danced in the final scene of the burlesque operetta of national customs Zizinha Maxixe, imitated from French by an anonymous author, performed at Teatro Éden Lavradio, in August 1895. Actor Machado Careca (José Machado Pinheiro e Costa ), anonymous author of the play, ended up putting verses in Corta-jaca's music, helping to popularize it, especially after its version was recorded on disk by the duo Os Geraldos. Throughout history, Corta-jaca attended other stages and repertoires: coffee-singers, beer-beauties, choro circles… But it was at the Palácio do Catete, in 1914, that it reached its glory. Performed on the guitar by First Lady Nair de Teffé, it caused political scandal and ended up calling the administration Hermes da Fonseca. The reaction can be measured by the impassioned speech that Senator Rui Barbosa delivered from the gallery. When inquiring what the cut-jaca that he had heard so much about is, he concludes: “The lowest, the most foul, the rudest of all wild dances, the twin sister of batuque, cateretê and samba. But at presidential receptions, the cut-jaca is performed with all the honors of Wagner's music, and we don't want the conscience of this country to revolt, our faces redden and the youth to laugh!†Never before in the history of Brazil has eminently popular music been performed in the seat of government, in front of the diplomatic corps and the country's elite. Corta-jaca became a classic of the great repertoire of Brazilian instrumental music, deserving recordings, among others, by Abel Ferreira, Altamiro Carrilho, Antonio Adolfo, Artur Moreira Lima, Clara Sverner, Conjunto Regional do Donga, Eudóxia de Barros, Guio de Morais, Itamar Assieré, Leandro Braga, Marcus Viana, Maria Teresa Madeira, Marcelo Verzoni, Paulo Moura, Radamés Gnatalli, Rosária Gatti, Talitha Peres, TurÃbio Santos, numerous bands and some sung versions. Unlike much of what you'll find out in the world of cheap gig music, this was in fact written BY a string player who has played in symphony orchestras, rock bands, and everything in between; who knows what gigging as a quartet looks like, but also what will wow your audiences without requiring weeks of rehearsal to prepare. So leave your days of sight-reading through piano scores behind and give your quartet some firepower with this hard hitting chart, that will surely enable your ensemble to do at least a little justice to this legendarily emotional banger from Ireland's finest! Bono's soaring vocal melodies on this tune offer more than enough material on their own to tug at an audience's heartstrings, but in this chart you'll also find faithful adaptations of the iconic guitar & bass parts (performed by cello & viola) that truly make this song one of a kind. Using extended string techniques like chopping & strum bowing, you'll feel as if you're rocking out with the band... with no need to hire those annoying extra musicians. But as we all know, strings have much more to offer dynamically than simply plodding along mimicking a rock band, so I've taken several select moments in this chart to break away briefly from those driving grooves into more open, contemplative textures, truly allowing this instrumentation to shine in its own unique way. All of that said, maybe rhythmic string playing isn't your thing and you just need a chart that classical string players can read through on a cocktail gig where the buyer clearly doesn't pay attention to the lyrical content of their song requests. If that's the case, I've provided a couple alternate figures at the back of the book that can be used to replace the percussive stuff in the viola part, making it much simpler without sacrificing too much of the energy. In the spirit of the original publication of 1571, you can add to the melody line any other C-pitch instruments that happen to be available. Even the additional of a couple of recorders will enhance the sound. Alternatively, you can do opposite and create a pleasing contrast by omitting instruments for certain sections. The audio demo will give you an idea how this might be achieved. While you can add flute, recorder, oboe, glockenspiel or whatever you want, additional instruments are not essential but can add contrasting tone color. The keyboard part is intended as a guide and when possible, the keyboard player should feel free to improvise around the part and the chords shown. A piano is distinctly out of place in this music and a digital or acoustic harpsichord sounds more authentic. Most electronic keyboards have a harpsichord option. The optional percussion instruments used are similar to those found in elementary school music rooms and usually include a tambour or hand-held drum, antique (finger) cymbals, wood-blocks and tambourine. Two or three players can be used and the parts can be interpreted quite freely. Dance music is intended to be fun, and we hope that this arrangement brings you just that.

The song can be found on Fogelberg's 1979 album Phoenix. It was also included on his 1982 greatest hits album as well as various other retrospective and compilation recordings.Fogelberg, who had released more rock oriented songs throughout the 1970s, jokingly described Longer in the liner notes to one of his retrospective albums as the song that put me on the elevators.[2] He wrote the song while vacationing in Maui, lounging in a hammock one night and looking up at the stars. It just seems this song was drifting around the universe, saw me, and decided I'd give it a good home.[2] Accompanying Fogelberg's vocals is an acoustic guitar (played by the singer) as well as a flugelhorn solo by Jerry Hey.
