As it is such a popular hit I was surprised to find that the original was by Bob Dylan, from the album ‘Time out of Mind’ from 1997, and also that it has been covered many times by different artists.In writing this for string quartet, I have given the melody to viola and cello as well as first violin, and mostly made use of the harmony in Adele’s version of the song, adding a few dissonances to spice it up a bit. I also include an expansive string interlude section with some double stopping for the viola.The performance is by Capriccio Quartet, who play for weddings, seasonal events and parties in England.Although this quartet is suitable for professional musicians, young players will also be able to manage it with a few adaptations. Firstly, the key of G is a an easy one for strings.The cellist will need to be able to play in fourth position, but only on the A string, and the tempo is slow. There is some double stopping for the viola in the string interlude, but it includes an open G, which can also be left out altogether without losing much harmonic tension. The bowing is a guide only, so take as many bows as make you feel comfortable and use the open strings wherever you need.Let me know if you perform it, and send me any recordings as I love to hear them, especially those from young players. This beautiful pared-down ballad (whose instrumentation features only the vocals, a pianist, and strings) earned Des'Ree critical acclaim, with many praising the emotional depth the song brought to the movie. Ever since its release, Kissing You has become a fan favorite and a very popular choice for weddings. This Cellobat arrangement for string quartet captures the beauty of the original, with many layers of lush (and sometimes unexpected) harmonies, a full range of dynamic intensity, the passionate melodic vocal line in the first violin, and the ethereal piano line in violin 2. Another great thing (for multi-instrumental arrangements) is that I include cue lines on each part, so that every player in the ensemble can see one other person’s music at the same time. Published by Helen Marple-Horvat (A0.749203). ‘Kissing You’ was written for the 1996 film Romeo and Juliet by Des’ree Weekes and Tim Atack, with the gorgeous string arrangements by Craig Armstrong. It is a much loved song, very well received by the critics and public alike, and hugely popular at weddings. As well as this arrangement for singer and string quartet/string orchestra, I also have an arrangement for string quartet without the singer, where the first violinist has the vocal line. The Quartet version can be found on my 'Skinny Black Dogs' Youtube Channel by typing in 'Romeo and Juliet, Kissing You.' The string parts in this version are almost identical to the quartet version but require fewer moments of double stopping as the singer carries the tune. The parts are not difficult to play, and the key is easy for strings. My bowing is just a guide, and less experienced players can easily change the bow more often. There is a tricky part for cello at Bar 28, but with a little help from a good teacher, I’m sure that it is not impossible. The cellist in my recording plays it very lightly, and it could also be done in thumb position, played an octave lower, or simplified. It is important to stick to a strict tempo so that the singer can pull against the barline. Take a look at my Quartet version on Youtube, but bear in mind that this one is a lot easier for the first violin.

As usual, the first violin has the hardest part in trying to sustain the slow melody with a good vibrato, but my bowing is just a guide, and less experienced players can easily change the bow more often. There is some double stopping, in order to get all the necessary notes into those beautiful chords which thickens the texture, but almost all of it has an open string as one of the notes. There is a tricky part for cello at Bar 28, but with a little help from a good teacher, I’m sure that it is not impossible. The cellist in my Youtube recording plays it very lightly, and it could also be done in thumb position, played an octave lower, or simplified. There is also a cello solo in fourth position at bar 14 including the high harmonic A. There needs to be room for some rubato in the song and the lead needs to be taken from whomever has the tune! Hope you enjoy playing this song! It was a lot of fun to arrange!
