Published by Helen Marple-Horvat (A0.749203). ‘Kissing You’ was written for the 1996 film Romeo and Juliet by Des’ree Weekes and Tim Atack, with the gorgeous string arrangements by Craig Armstrong. It is a much loved song, very well received by the critics and public alike, and hugely popular at weddings. As well as this arrangement for singer and string quartet/string orchestra, I also have an arrangement for string quartet without the singer, where the first violinist has the vocal line. The Quartet version can be found on my 'Skinny Black Dogs' Youtube Channel by typing in 'Romeo and Juliet, Kissing You.' The string parts in this version are almost identical to the quartet version but require fewer moments of double stopping as the singer carries the tune. The parts are not difficult to play, and the key is easy for strings. My bowing is just a guide, and less experienced players can easily change the bow more often. There is a tricky part for cello at Bar 28, but with a little help from a good teacher, I’m sure that it is not impossible. The cellist in my recording plays it very lightly, and it could also be done in thumb position, played an octave lower, or simplified. It is important to stick to a strict tempo so that the singer can pull against the barline. Take a look at my Quartet version on Youtube, but bear in mind that this one is a lot easier for the first violin.

BACKSTORY ON “The Dog Had…†Variations The origin of “The Dog Had…†Variations†stems from a frantic voicemail received from the composer’s mother-in-law many years ago while on a visit exclaiming that our dog at the time, Pepper, a chocolate-brown and white springer spaniel, “HAD†an accident of explosive proportions on their basement rug and that we needed to “GET HOME†and deal with it immediately. At first the family was taken aback by the phone message, but ultimately it became a source of hilarity and shortly afterward, the composer’s wife created a rhyme from the message and a tune immediately sprung from that. This tune simply became something our family sung together periodically over many year’s time for amusement until now when the composer came up with the idea to set it to variations for string quartet. In this work, the tune is first heard in simple fashion in its entirety in the viola. Fragments of the tune follow in various guises. For example, the rhythm of the words “GET HOME†as well as “I’VE HAD IT†are prominent thematic ideas used in the piece. The top three parts pulse notes of the triads staying within an octave, while the bottom part has scales and arpeggios ranging one and a half octaves. This piece is excellent for studying different articulations, contrasting between detached, staccato, and slurred. The majestic nature of the piece makes it a great recital performance that sounds very professional when all put together.

An agitated retransition to the A' section sets the tone for a quick, climactic ending.III: 6/8 time, F major in A section, Bb minor in B section. Ternary form with coda (ABA-CODA.) 74 measures. But as it progressed, we wanted to take a truly differential step forward. We use the music from the opening scene of the first episode of the fourth season (Two Swords) which leads inevitably into the traditional opening music, as Tywin melts Ice into Widow's Lament and Oathkeeper. We start with the Lannisters theme (the Rains of Castamere) on cello, later accompanied by viola. A general crescendo leaves us with the main theme, transcribed as best as possible from Ramin Djawadi's masterful header. The violin can do pizz on the last phrase, or not play it at all. Arrangement on a single page to facilitate its interpretation outdoors. Bowings and dynamics to facilitate a good sightreading. All set to recreate the Red Wedding in your performances! Utilizamos la música de la escena preliminar del primer capÃtulo de la cuarta temporada (Two Swords) que desemboca irremediablemente en la música de cabecera tradicional, mientras Tywin funde Hielo para convertirla en Lamento de Viuda y Guardajuramentos. A contemporary classical piece and composed for String Quartet, it uses various techniques, rhythms and repetitions recreating musically the tram and therefore has a sense of 'Programme music'. The 1st movement is light, energetic and has a youthful demeanour- this appears rhythmically simple, but second and third position violin techniques are used. The 2nd movement has more spirit and rhythms become more fluid and progressive. It also comprises of various pizzicato techniques The 3rd movement follows chromatic harmonic techniques and has an atonal sense, but quite suitable for a Beginner String Quartet or various aspiring contemporary youth groups. The whole composition also comprises of pizzicato, tremolo and staccato expression and techniques. I hope you are able to find some fun and enjoyment in playing this score.

Published by Helen Marple-Horvat (A0.749204). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfUzzRnPptQ ‘Kissing You’ was written for the 1996 film Romeo and Juliet by Des’ree Weekes and Tim Atack, with the gorgeous string arrangements by Craig Armstrong. It is a much loved song, very well received by the critics and public alike, and hugely popular at weddings. As well as this arrangement for string quartet, I also have an arrangement on Sheet Music Plus, for female singer and string quartet backing. The Quartet version can be found on my Skinny Black Dogs Youtube Channel, by typing in ‘Romeo and Juliet, Kissing You’. The parts are not difficult to play, and the key is easy for strings. As usual, the first violin has the hardest part in trying to sustain the slow melody with a good vibrato, but my bowing is just a guide, and less experienced players can easily change the bow more often. There is some double stopping, in order to get all the necessary notes into those beautiful chords which thickens the texture, but almost all of it has an open string as one of the notes. There is a tricky part for cello at Bar 28, but with a little help from a good teacher, I’m sure that it is not impossible. The cellist in my Youtube recording plays it very lightly, and it could also be done in thumb position, played an octave lower, or simplified. There is also a cello solo in fourth position at bar 14 including the high harmonic A. There needs to be room for some rubato in the song and the lead needs to be taken from whomever has the tune! Hope you enjoy playing this song! It was a lot of fun to arrange!
