French composer Jacques Leguerney (1906-1997) has been recognized for hisoutstanding oeuvre of songs for voice and piano, mostly composed upon poems of theFrench poets of the Pleiade. After his death, the Leguerney Estate decided to allow thepublication of his instrumental chamber music. These works, many of which werewritten in his early years, are valuable contributions to the French chamber musicrepertoire, representing the 20th century from its early years through World War II.This Trio was composed in 1928, but not performed until December 3, 1932. Therespected French musicians Hortense de Sampigny (violinist) and Jacques Serres(cellist) gave its first and, as far as we know, only performance along withLeguerney’s friend and mentor, Thérèse Cahen, at the piano. The concert includingthis work was organized by the Société Musicale Indépendante at the concert hall ofthe Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris. A review, in the Journal des débâts, reads:“We do not know this composer. Judging from his composition, whose variegatedstyle reminds us of [Cesar] Franck, of Maurice Ravel and of Spanish dances, he mustbe quite young.â€The same month as this performance, Leguerney’s father, Marcel Leguerney, died. Atthis point, he interrupted his musical activity in order to take over his father’s businessto support his mother and sister. He was not able to resume musical composition until1940, when the outbreak of the war led him to close the business.This edition is based upon two autograph manuscript sources of the full score, as wellas copyist’s parts for the violin and ‘cello. His first completed sketch as well as hisfinal copy are in the Leguerney archives. The parts, made by a copyist, were obviouslyused for a performance, and contain suggested phrasing, as well as bowings (whichwe have not reproduced). We surmise that the violin and ’cello parts were used for thefirst performance. We also think that Thérèse Cahen must have kept her piano score,as the copyist's score of it was not found with the other parts.We have added rehearsal numbers, and corrected a few notational mistakes in themanuscript.We would like to thank Jean Libermann, cellist, and Marion Larigaudrie, violinist,for their advice in the preparation of this edition.

Published by Pavel Trojan (A0.1021226). The Piano Trio N.2 by Pavel Trojan was composed in 2009 at the call of the Czech Trio and has since been played many times in the Czech Republic and abroad. This work was also recorded by Czech Radio and released on CD (Radioservis). The performance of this work in Dvořák's Hall of Rudolfinum in 2011, was particularly resonated. The Composition has 4 movements and is appropriate both for music school students and professional concert artists. PAVEL TROJAN was born on 14th August 1956 in Domažlice. Between 1977 and 1982, he studied composition with Ilja HurnÃk at the Prague Conservatory; after that, from 1982 until 1989, he went to attend the Music and Dance Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he studied in the class of Jiřà Pauer.The composer has extensive chamber, orchestral and musical dramatic work, which includes both opera and musical. In his work he puts emphasis on melody, brevity and clarity.He has been working at the Prague Conservatory since 1986, at first as a music theory tutor, and from 1991 as a music composition teacher. From 1992 until 2004, he was the vice director of the conservatory until being appointed the director in December 2004 (until July 2018). He is currently teaching a composition. Main works:Piano Concerto (1989), Missa solemnis (1998), Variations on a Theme by and Written in Honor of Václav Trojan (2006), Sinfonia giocosa (2008), Piano Trio No. 2 (2009), Pastoral Fairytale (Opera, 2012), Concerto for Violin and Orchestra N. 2 (2015), The Cross of Zavis (Musical, 2016).

Originally from Glasgow, Timothy studied at the Royal College of Music, London and the Banff Centre, Canada. He has toured widely internationally and has recorded for BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM as well as TV appearances in Russia and Egypt. An epic choice for a recital or funeral.Fauré Background: In the first place, Gabriel Fauré 1845 –1924) was a famous French composer, musician, and educator. Furthermore, his musical ideas influenced numerous 20th-century composers. Therefore, historians regard him as one of the leading French composers of his time. Famous Works: Among his most famous compositions, by and large, are the Pavane, Elegie (op. 24), Requiem, Sicilienne, Nocturnes for piano and the songs Après un rêve and Clair de lune. Inasmuch as his early works are well-known and relatively easy to perform, Faure’s music seems to have become gradually more difficult during his later life. In other words, his later works are somewhat esoteric and complex. Early Home Life: Fauré was in fact born into a well-cultivated family. His aptitude for music became particularly clear early on - when he was still a boy. Under these circumstances, his parents sent him to a music institution in Paris. Consequently, the training he received there prepared him for a career as a church organist and choirmaster. Middle Life: It is important to realize that Fauré studied music composition with the French musical mastermind Camille Saint-Saëns, who became his lifelong friend. Fauré eventually graduated from college and earned a living as an organist and educator. During this period, he had, on the whole, little time to compose. He consequently became more successful in his middle age, becoming organist of the Église de la Madeleine and director of the Paris Conservatoire. However, he still needed time on balance for composing. Therefore, given these points, he withdrew to the countryside during the summer to focus on composing. Later Life: Fauré was, in the final analysis, recognized in France as the foremost French composer of his time. The French government held a national musical tribute particularly for him in Paris. The French President notably headed the ceremony. Elsewhere, on the contrary, Fauré's music was slow to become accepted, except of course, in England. Legacy: Historians often describe Fauré's music in general as a transition between the end of Romanticism and the beginning of modernism. As an illustration, when Fauré was born, Chopin was still composing. However, by the time of Fauré's death, jazz and atonal music, in particular, had come to fruition. Fauré, by all means, suffered from increasing deafness in his later years. Some musicologists believe this to be indeed the cause of the esoteric nature of Faure’s final works.

Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1488223). Ferdinand Ries (1784-1838) was one of the greatest pianists of his time and a composer of exceptional abilities. Ries studied pianoforte (but not composition) with Beethoven in Vienna and the two men remained on cordial terms for the rest of their lives. In the last year of his life Ries co-wrote a book of Beethoven reminiscences that remain one of the most valuable sources of information about his life and character. The place and date of composition of the Sonate Sentimentale is uncertain in spite of the apparently conclusive evidence to the contrary: Ries's autograph score is dated 'Godesberg 1814' but by this time Ries was living in London. The discrepancy is probably due to the fact that Ries added the date to this manuscript, as he did to many others, in the 1820s. One of the most intriguing aspects of this work is the difference between Ries's original conception and the work as it appeared in its first published edition in 1834. The extent of the changes points to a substantial authorial revision of the work made prior to publication rather than a garbled transmission of the original text. Among the most striking of these changes is the inclusion of a brief introduction to the first movement; but other passages are extensively rewritten and in some instances lengthened by the inclusion of additional material. As with all Ries's works for flute, the Sonate Sentimentale is exceptionally well written for the instrument and yet perhaps even more impressive is the way in which Ries balances the musical texture and exploits the full potential of both the flute and piano. The beautiful work is arguably the most impressive flute sonata of the early 19th century. Allan Badley.

A native of Croatia, the American composer Zvonimir Nagy has been the recipient of music honors and awards, most notably the Seattle Symphony Orchestra Composition Prize and Swan Prize in Music Composition. Nagy received a doctor of music composition degree from Northwestern University (USA); he also studied music at Texas Christian University, the école Normale de Musique (France), and the Academy of Music-University of Zagreb (Croatia). Nagy's compositions are inspired by the intersection of music aesthetics and perception. He explores various contexts and critical perspectives that illuminate ideas on music and its impact on the mind. His music is frequently commissioned and performed throughout the United States and Europe. Nagy has taught on the faculties of Northwestern and St. Xavier University in Chicago (USA) and has presented at music conferences, workshops, and colloquia. Currently, he serves as Assistant Professor of Music at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is also the Cathedral Organist at St. Joseph Cathedral in Wheeling, West Virginia. Nagy continues to perform as a solo and collaborative organist and pianist.
