This version, 'Part 2', is also used in the 2nd Breaking Dawn film, with the addition of a male voice for a beautiful duet. In this arrangement, the violin takes the female voice and the cello takes the male voice, both adding accompaniments to the piano line in between their verses. This is suitable for students as the string parts are not too difficult. If the pianist uses a pedal to keep that suspended feeling in the bars, this sounds really atmospheric. .

The famous ‘Last Thought’, however, is not quoted. Instead, the image of Schumann‘s melody is evoked in the listener‘s mind by the help of an augmented triad, stretched to breaking point, which is inverted and transposed again and again. Even the following movements do not quote directly but present only a notion. In my adaptation of a work originally composed in 2002 for eight-voice choir, violin and violoncello, I was particularly interested in recreating the tonal spectrum of the three extended vocalises (sung by the choir) for the piano in my new version for piano trio. While the piano part had to accommodate the entire choral texture, the parts for violin and violoncello remained almost unaltered. This was however not a mere transcription: above all, I significantly expanded the ecstatic climax occurring towards the end of the version for choir, which expresses a vision of dawn breaking and the awakening of nature with its profusion of birdsong. In addition to his extensive musical expertise, Bernd Alois Zimmermann was also extremely knowledgeable in other fields, above all in philosophy and literature. The composer had devoted himself intensely to the concept of time within the area of philosophy: he became famous for his concept of the “sphericality of timeâ€. In his work Présence, apparently disparate elements are pulled together in an all-embracing simultaneity. The three instrumentalists are assigned literary figures who can all be considered as constants in Zimmermann’s Å“uvre: Ubu Roi (piano), a voracious grotesquely caricatured tyrant from Alfred Jarry’s absurd play, Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quijote (violin) and Molly Bloom (cello) from James Joyce’s ground-breaking novel Ulysses. The instrumentalists are accompanied by a silent (!) “speaker†who hisses so-called “word emblems†from Paul Poertner’s volume of poems Wurzelwerk between the movements. The word emblem for Scene 3 incorporating musical quotations from Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata Op. 83 and Stockhausen’s Zeitmaße is: “Alle Wahrvögel nisten in einem einzigen Baum†[All true birds nest in a single tree].

Blaze Scheuerman #651902. Published by Blaze Scheuerman (A0.1047344). First love is inspired by my experience with the first partner I ever loved. It is also slightly inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s fugues from the Well Tempered Clavier and Muse’s song “Butterflies and Hurricanes†from the album “Absolutionâ€. It is meant to show the ups and downs of the relationship, especially how the more developed it got the more problems arose. It starts with a cloud-like scene meant to depict mild attraction. It then develops into infatuation in measure 21 as the main character gets to enjoy his experiences with his partner. It lasts for a little while as he finds newer and newer aspects of his partner that he enjoys. He then returns to a moment of stability with the restatement of the opening theme, and then tries again to get back into those moments of bliss. But this time something goes wrong. The character doesn’t quite realize it until it is too late, but a rift appears in the relationship. This is shown in the D Minor section, as the main character is sad and longing for things to go back to how they were, but is just stuck. After a while of trying different things, a settlement is reached and the two get closer again in the relationship, seen in measure 174. Except this time things are different, they are close to the bond shown earlier, except not quite there. This can be seen with the rearrangement of voices in regards to the melody, such as the cello having the melody except the violin in measure 190. Although the two try their best, the relationship once again reaches a rift between the two, seen with the reemergence of the D Minor section. They try once again to patch things up, but end up becoming unsuccessful and breaking apart. The final sections starting at measure 246 depict the sadness and anger that follow, before eventually reaching a resolution back into the home key of F Major.
