The Concert à 9 Parties, 50:1, features an eccentric instrumentation of flute (ordinary, or that at the octave [i.e. piccolo], or the two combined), alto chalumeau, oboe, two violins almost entirely in unison, viola, two concertante contrabasses, and continuo.The work is in fact a three-movement symphony, as indicated by the original title that Telemann crossed out before he began composing: Grillen-Symphonie in the Italian, French, English, Scottish, and Polish styles. Beethoven's Romance No. 1 in G major for violin and orchestra op. 40 (c. 1801) was transposed in C major, arranged in the new key and appropriate tempo, and expanded to form a rondo Finale fit for his unfinished Concerto in C major, of which only about a half of a clean copy of the first movement survived as WoO 5 (1791-1792). Also, a newly composed solo cadenza was now inserted. Almost surely, the Romance No. 2 in F major op. 50 (c. 1791?) was intended as the slow movement of the Concerto (it has virtually the same scoring as WoO 5, the manuscript bears no title, and there is a thematic relation to WoO 5). The Romance No. 1 in G major was probably intended as a replacement or alternate slow movement, but it is his only composition relatable to the Concerto fragment, so I adapted it as conjecture Finale for a complete performing version of the Concerto.

Score and parts of a premiere realization of some of Beethoven's sketches for the first movement of another Symphony in C major before the First, dubbed 'No. 0' or Unv. 2 by some: 1. 'Overture' (Andante con moto - Allegro con brio), 2. Tempo di menuetto. Useful for people interested in Beethoven's sketches and for students of the Classical style. In 1794-1796, Beethoven made extensive concept sketches mostly for the first movement of this abortive symphony. The material is abundant and sometimes contradictory, as usual with his preliminary work, and he recycled later from this one only the main theme of the Finale of the completed Symphony No. 1. For this speculative realization, suggested by Mr. Armando Orlandi at the Centro Ricerche Musicali and dedicated to them, only the more promising sketches were utilized, and the slow introduction was assembled from the ones in cut time, while those in triple time make up now a Minuet. Virtually every bar of music here includes the sketches, also in the elaboration and coda of the 'overture', only with a few transpositions needed for assembling the sonata form and for the repeats in the Minuet. Obviously, Beethoven would have done it much differently, had he decided to continue working on this symphony, and the question remains regarding the utility of recycling material abandoned by some classical composer. However, this gives one an approximate idea of one of the many possibilities implied by the preliminary sketches for his Symphony 'No. 0'. Total duration 15 minutes. [(N.S.) 5 March] – 14 April 1759) was a German, later British, Baroque composer who spent the bulk of his career in London, becoming well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, concerti grossi and organ concertos. Handel received important training in Halle and worked as a composer in Hamburg and Italy before settling in London in 1712; he became a naturalised British subject in 1727. He was strongly influenced both by the great composers of the Italian Baroque and by the middle-German polyphonic choral tradition. Within fifteen years, Handel had started three commercial opera companies to supply the English nobility with Italian opera. Musicologist Winton Dean writes that his operas show that Handel was not only a great composer; he was a dramatic genius of the first order.[6] As Alexander's Feast (1736) was well received, Handel made a transition to English choral works. After his success with Messiah (1742) he never composed an Italian opera again. Almost blind, and having lived in England for nearly fifty years, he died in 1759, a respected and rich man. His funeral was given full state honours, and he was buried in Westminster Abbey in London. Born the same year as Johann Sebastian Bach and Domenico Scarlatti, Handel is regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Baroque era, with works such as Messiah, Water Music, and Music for the Royal Fireworks remaining steadfastly popular. One of his four coronation anthems, Zadok the Priest (1727), composed for the coronation of George II, has been performed at every subsequent British coronation, traditionally during the sovereign's anointing. Another of his English oratorios, Solomon (1748), has also remained popular, with the Sinfonia that opens act 3 (known more commonly as The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba) featuring at the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. Handel composed more than forty opera serias in over thirty years, and since the late 1960s, with the revival of baroque music and historically informed musical performance, interest in Handel's operas has grown. On that day, amid accompanying splendour, the music-loving Grand Duke Michail Nikolaievich (1832-1909), youngest brother of Tsar Alexander II, married Princess Caecilie of Baden (1839-91), daughter of Archduke Leopold of Baden. Johann Strauss, who at that time was giving a summer season of concerts in nearby Pavlovsk, used the opportunity occasioned by the event to enhance his already enviable popularity with the Russian royal family and composed the Caecilien-Polka in honour of the lovely young bride. Indeed, it is clear from a letter which Johann wrote in late July 1857 to Carl Haslinger, his publisher in Vienna, that the new polka had been prepared well in advance of the wedding (the fair copy of the full orchestral score made for the publisher's engraver is dated 9 August) and was enjoying success even before the royal couple's official engagement on 16August 1857. Sometime after performing the Caecilien-Polka in Pavlovsk, Johann despatched the work to the Austrian capital where his brother Josef conducted its Viennese première, together with that of Johann's waltz Telegraphische Depeschen (op. 195, Volume 28), at his own benefit concert in the Volksgartenon Sunday 18 October 1857. The Wiener Allgemeine Theaterzeitung (16.10.1857) remarked that both works have caused a sensation in St. Petersburg and are truly genial Viennese sounds full of verve and melody. Since tradition demanded that the German Princess Caecilie adopt a Russian name - Olga Feodorovna - before her marriage, so Johann's Caecilien-Polka also underwent a change of identity. On 8 December 1857 Carl Haslinger announced the publication of Strauss's Olga-Polka, on the title page of which is the inscription: Dedicated to her Imperial Highness Grand Duchess Olga, née Princess of Baden. It was under this title, too, that Johann himself first conducted the work in Vienna at a concert in the Volksgarten on 1 November 1857, shortly after his return from Russia. Im Französischen mündet sie aber in DEN Rhone – Le Rhône. Das verwirrt den Komponisten: Wie erhalten Flüsse ihr Geschlecht, sind sie mal männlich, mal weiblich? Liegt es an ihrem Charakter, an der Landschaft, die sie durchfließen? An ihrem Wasser, ihren Fischen gar? An den Menschen an ihren Ufern? Es entsteht eine veritable Konfusion. Bei darauf folgenden Gedanken über Musik entdeckt der Komponist gewisse Analogien und stellt sich die Frage: Gibt es eigentlich geschlechtertypische Musik? Oder Instrumente? Typisch männliche Harmonien oder Rhythmen? Oder eindeutig weibliche Melodien und die Art, zu interpretieren? Dieser Frage widmet sich die 3-sätzige Komposition und mäandriert dabei tänzerisch im Bett der zusammenfließenden Ströme. Farbenreiche modale Harmonien bilden das Bett für weite Melodiebögen. Ein variiert wiederkehrendes Thema gibt die Richtung vor und erzeugt einen sprudelnd tänzelnden Sog in Richtung der Mündung: Tanzendes Finale! 1. Satz: Deux Charactères Im ersten Satz (Andante) werden die Rollen verteilt - die Sâone und der Rhône erhalten ihre Darsteller. Ein erster Blick auf das Ensemble lässt schon eine Tendenz erkennen: Holzbläser(inne)n übernehmen die weibliche Hauptrolle, das männliche Blech den Gegenpart. Die beiden Schlagwerker unterstützen solidarisch je einen der beiden Pole. Mag die Zuordnung auf der Hand liegen, so bleiben doch starke Zweifel im Schlussakkord des ersten Satzes. 2. Dialogues In kleineren und größeren Dialogen wird sich munter ausgetauscht und werden die Eigenschaften herausgearbeitet und weiter entwickelt. Aber es wird zunehmend auch kopiert und imitiert, gar boshaft agitiert und nachgeäfft. Man versucht sich gegenseitig zu überzeugen, fällt sich ins Wort, braust beiderseits zunehmend auf, es wird lauter und hektischer, immer lauter, zu laut, bis die Kommunikation erlischt: Man schreit sich schließlich nur noch an! 3. Dance de Conflusion Die entstandene Konfusion findet im dritten Satz der Komposition ein versöhnliches Ende: Lasst uns tanzen! So wird schlussendlich aus der anfänglichen Confusion eine Conflusion: Es fließt und tanzt zusammen, was zusammen gehört. Louis Adolphe Mayeur (1837 - 1894), was a Belgium clarinetist, saxophonist, composer and conductor who spent most of his musical career in France; Entering the French Military in 1855, he was a clarinetist in the Second Régiment of the Cuirassiers (Mounted Calvary) of the Garde Impériale. A student of Klosé at the Paris Conservatory, he received his First Prize in Clarinet in 1860. One of the inner circle of Adolphe Sax (along with fellow Belgiums Jules Demersseman and Jean-Baptiste Singelée, whose “Quartet for Saxophones“ was premièred with Mayeur playing and Demersseman conducting), Mayeur took up the saxophone and was quickly engaged as the saxophone soloist in the Opera House of Brussels, La Monnaie (the Mint). Sax commissioned a number of works from Mayeur for the saxophone, which were published by his company and used in his class at the Paris Conservatory.By 1871, Mayeur was also named Saxophone Solo with the Paris Opera, performing in opears and ballets by Halévy, Meyerbeer, Thomas, Saint-Saens, Massenet, Délibes and Paladlihe. It would appear that sometime during this period, his relations with Sax became difficult, culminating in his publications of works by Buffet-Crampon, one of Sax’s rival companies and one of the main protagonists in the series of lawsuits which led to Sax’s bankrupcy. Mayeur’s own declining health lead to his death in 1894.The Grande Fantaisie de Concert sur Rigoletto dates from 1877. The contrasting sections use motifs from arias and duets from Verdi’s opera. Florid cadenzas seperate the various sections, but those passages should be played in the manner of “bel canto†ornamentation, always lyrical and songlike. This is the score and solo part for the orchestral version. Versions are available from Musik Fabrik for piano for Symhony Orchestra (on rental : 2222/2000/Timp/hp/strings) and for Concert Band (for sale). The score plus solo part for each of the versions is available for sale, as well as the individual parts for the concert band version

WheatMyer Music #4766879. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976709). PASSION CHORALE is the name given to a 1656 German tune which accompanies the words of the ancient hymn, O Sacred Head Now Wounded. This tune is clearly heard throughout this instrumental arrangement called Pathos Chorodia, which is a transliteration of the Greek for 'passion chorale.' I chose the Greek due to it being the common language of the First Century Near East with which the early Church was fluent. Although the familiar melody is heard clearly throughout, the setting will sound very foreign to most ears. In acknowledgment of the atonal origins of the pierrot ensemble, this arrangement embraces dissonance and chromaticism, and avoids clear statements of conventional harmony without, however, being altogether atonal. Thus, it is a most unusual setting of the tune, but one that poignantly paints the deep anguish expressed in the hymn text, the anguish of the crucifixion's witnesses. The music is simultaneously shocking and familiar, which seems a fitting way to present this familiar story in all its shocking horror.The music may be successfully performed with advanced high school or later musicians. It is not excessively technically demanding but will require artistic taste and expressiveness. It is good selection for chamber ensemble concerts and suited for either secular or sacred venues.

Three Laments of Heloise were inspired by the Letters of Abelard and Heloise, especially the character of Heloise, her crushing loss, self-denial, sacrifice, and forced conformity to the standards of medieval society. The first movement entitled Queens Envied Me My Joys is Heloise’s recollection of early days with Abelard. Every wife, every young girl desired you in absence and was on fire in your presence, writes Heloise. The pleasures of lovers which we shared have been too sweet… They are always there before my eyes, bringing with them awakened longings… The second movement If Not With You, My Heart Is Nowhere, expresses Heloise’s sense of abandonment by her lover. She writes to him: My heart was not in me but with you, and now, even more, if it is not with you it is nowhere; truly, without you I cannot exist. The third movement, My Most Wretched Soul, gives voice to Heloise’s continued struggle with her loss and the reality of the convent life. She does not see herself as a servant of God, but rather a hypocrite who remains pious on the outside and rages inwardly. Of all wretched women I am the most wretched, and amongst the unhappy I am unhappiest. How can it be called repentance for sins, however great the mortification of the flesh, if the mind still retains the will to sin and is on fire with its old desires? Modal scales and dance sequences give the Laments a Renaissance feel. Music theory students might appreciate the fact that the unifying element of the three movements is the interval of the 7th which appears very frequently in melodic and harmonic gestures and creates a feeling of ambiguity and of a lack of resolution. For chamber orchestra: Flute (or Piccolo), Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Strings (Quintet, or 4,4,3,2,1, or larger), 2 Percussion: Frame Drum, Tambourine. Total duration 8:00.
