Concert Version: Darwin: To Love the Earth is a concert musical (optional staging) about the life of Charles Darwin. This is an abbreviated version of the staged musical: Charles Darwin: To Love the Earth The main singing role is of Darwin himself, Henslow, and his wife, Emma, and sister Caroline. There are several speaking roles, and a chorus which is offstage. The words come from Darwin and letters from friends. It shows how he was successful in many ways but was always criticized which he had to endure. This is accompanied by a chamber orchestra: Piano, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, French Horn, Violin, Viola, and Cello. The Full Score includes all musical numbers as well as spoken lines.

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533598). Symphony No. 2, Litanies of Love and Rain (2004) for orchestra is a symphonic work in onemovement. It is dedicated to Marisa Green.The work is inspired by a poem (Desiring the Solicitude of Rain) by American poet Kathleen Wakefield. The landscape of rich imagery in Wakefield's poem drives the extra-musical inspiration of this work. Musical material from the earlier vocal work is re-imagined in a purely orchestral context.Wakefield's poem contains images and messages of love and journey amidst the desire for the coming of rain. It is these ideas which provided the poetic conception of the work. Throughout the piece, the winds and brass play an extensive lyric and melodic role. A strand of singing lyricism runs throughout. Instruments are always exploring and highlighting theresonances in melodic and contrapuntal lines of other instruments. The work is cast in three sections (slow-fast-slow) plus a coda. The opening section begins with a forceful gesture that returns throughout the work as a signal. A melodic idea (containing the basic material of the work) is presented in the clarinet and it is developed throughout the rest ofthe section. A faster section emerges in a burst of energy as instruments hocket off each other.The next section is marked slow, ritualistic. The strings create an otherworldly harmonic cloud of gradually shifting and overlapping harmonies. Through this cloud, bassoon, trumpet,and flute solos emerge. Finally, the opening music is recalled in the coda as the potential energy continues to build. And , the tune was added in 1862 by William Batchelder Bradbury (1816–1868). After publication as a Hymn it became one of the most popular Christian hymns in churches around the world. Although it is a melody with a simple structure, it is especially loved by children due to its interesting progression. I quoted this beautiful melody and arranged it into a small violin concerto format.

Ben-Amots: The Joyce Cycle (1986) James Joyce's collection of 36 love poems titled Chamber Music has been a source of inspiration to many composers. From these, Ben-Amots has set nine for medium voice and piano (later orchestrated--see below), in a style he characterizes as neo-romantic to match the deliberate archaicism of Joyce's language. The songs are meant to be sung as a complete cycle, but these complex and beautiful settings may be performed independently. Shortly after composing the cycle, Ben-Amots orchestrated it, and he now considers the orchestral version to have priority. Deftly and lightly scored (winds in pairs, no heavy brass), this version sounds strikingly Mahlerian in places. 1. O Sweetheart... The lover finds solace in love when friends him fail. 2. My love is in a light attire... He admires the sight of his love walking through an orchard. 3. My dove my beautiful one... In language reminiscent of the Song of Songs, he bids her arise. 4. Rain has fallen... They seek shelter on a rainy day. 5. Sleep Now, O Sleep Now... The lover's unquiet heart is calmed with a kiss. 6. It was out by Donnycarney... A cheerful folksong, sealed with another kiss. 7. Winds of May... By the turbulent sea, the loved one has disappeared. 8. I Hear an Army... Giving way to despair the lover dreams of an army ferociously charging up out of the depths. But... 9. From Dewy dreams... It was just a dream, after all. Three Laments of Heloise were inspired by the Letters of Abelard and Heloise, especially the character of Heloise, her crushing loss, self-denial, sacrifice, and forced conformity to the standards of medieval society. The first movement entitled Queens Envied Me My Joys is Heloise’s recollection of early days with Abelard. Every wife, every young girl desired you in absence and was on fire in your presence, writes Heloise. The pleasures of lovers which we shared have been too sweet… They are always there before my eyes, bringing with them awakened longings… The second movement If Not With You, My Heart Is Nowhere, expresses Heloise’s sense of abandonment by her lover. She writes to him: My heart was not in me but with you, and now, even more, if it is not with you it is nowhere; truly, without you I cannot exist. The third movement, My Most Wretched Soul, gives voice to Heloise’s continued struggle with her loss and the reality of the convent life. She does not see herself as a servant of God, but rather a hypocrite who remains pious on the outside and rages inwardly. Of all wretched women I am the most wretched, and amongst the unhappy I am unhappiest. How can it be called repentance for sins, however great the mortification of the flesh, if the mind still retains the will to sin and is on fire with its old desires? Modal scales and dance sequences give the Laments a Renaissance feel. Music theory students might appreciate the fact that the unifying element of the three movements is the interval of the 7th which appears very frequently in melodic and harmonic gestures and creates a feeling of ambiguity and of a lack of resolution. For chamber orchestra: Flute (or Piccolo), Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Strings (Quintet, or 4,4,3,2,1, or larger), 2 Percussion: Frame Drum, Tambourine. Total duration 8:00. Pájaros for solo flute and strings (2017) captures the springtime songs of many Texas Hill Country birds, including the beloved Golden-cheeked Warbler, and sets them to flirtatious Latin rhythms.As an avid bird lover, the composer sets some of her favorite bird songs to music in Pájaros for solo flute and strings. The birds featured in this piece nest every spring in the Hill Country of Texas, west of Austin. As daylight turns to dusk, the Bewick's Wren's tuneful song unfolds over an Argentine tango rhythm, accompanied by the Northern Cardinal, Lesser Goldfinch, and Northern Bobwhite. A Red-tailed Hawk startles all the songbirds into momentary silence. As they resume their singing, dusk fades into darkness and various insects start their incessant chirping. The mysterious Chuck-will's-widow sings its mournful call all night long, set here to a Venezuelan pasaje rhythm. When day breaks, the Golden-cheeked Warbler sings its two songs from the treetops to stake out its territory and attract a mate. Originally written with a full choral accompaniment for the Easter Week Vespers of 1729, Bach's skilful reworking of the melody for bass and chamber baroque orchestra in the St Matthew Passion gives the solo voice a unique poignancy and fragility. The Lutheran chorale on which Bach based his composition speaks of hearts needing to be cleansed of sin and sorrow as they prepare to meet the Savior - an idea timeless in its poignancy and universality. The vocal part is generally quite free, allowing the singer to express herself freely. The orchestration is for tymp/perc/vibra/hp/cel/harps/strings(minimum : 44222) Like a supple vine, the voice seems to unfold across the orchestra, with the warm expressive themes and shining strings, with the support of the harpsichord, the vibraphone and other percussion. Certainly, there is a coloristic note in the orchestral palette, but also a wish to combine the colors of the voice and the orchestra in different manners. Through this osmosis and through the tempo rubato suggested several times, by the absence of metronomic movements, the composer has tried to create music which breathes through freedom, suppleness and poetry, in the infinite spirals of beauty and love, outside of space and time.. The orchestral version of the work was recorded in 2014 with Isaure Equilez, mezzo-soprano and the National Polish Radio Orchestra under the direction of Paul Wehage The orchestral parts are available from the publisher on rental.
