This piece, also known as ‘Serenade for wind instruments, cello, and double bass’, has a strong old-world Slavonic styling. This serenade was written as a dedication to composer and music critic Louis Ehlert, whose positive reviews of Dvořák’s works, helped boost his career in Germany. This arrangement focuses on the first of the four movement work which was labeled as Moderato, quasi marcia. The orchestration alone makes this piece unique and requires many of the instruments found in an orchestra. It is a great choice for ensembles that have players that double on other instruments and as a way to showcase chamber work without excluding too many musicians.To add options to this arrangement, supplemental parts have been included for Piano, Guitar, Timpani, Marimba, Snare Drum, Drum Set, Cymbals and Triangle/Bass Drum.

I reduced the forces required, so that a chamber orchestra with single winds (fl, ob, cl, bsn, trpt, horn, trbn) and fewer string players can perform it. There is a supportive piano part throughout. Level: advanced intermediate. Duration: 7 minutes, 5 seconds.

By arranging these Concerti for string quartet and piano I hope to make it possible for more pianists to play them in a chamber setting, and for more audiences to become acquainted with, or reacquainted with, these works of art. The beauty, of these arrangements is that they bridge the gap between playing this concerto in public with a 2nd piano accompaniment, or with full orchestra. They make it possible for pianist and string quartet to reinvigorate the canon of these Concerti without the space, sonic volume, and expenses of full orchestra, thus making it possible to play in a wider variety of smaller and more intimate venues. This in turn creates the opportunity for more audiences to enjoy these works performed more often. Seen in this way, a concert reflects a value system that pits the individual against the group and poses a struggle of I against you. Surely this vehemence could be explained in a Beethovenian era when the concepts of human rights and individual freedom were fragile ideals.However, it is a different scale of values that my piano concerto tries to reflect: the idea of cooperation, of teamwork and of an orchestra as a living organism whose organs are not superior to one another, more vital than others, but fulfil different functions, qualitatively speaking.Every soloist plays a leading role, but this does not imply either subordination to the rest or denigration or subjugation of the rest. The fact that the soloist is sometimes in the foreground does not imply a victory over the others. The very concept of victory is meaningless here.At times, the soloist will fulfil a leadership role, at others he or she will underpin from passivity what is happening in the orchestra, intentionally from the shadows, as a grey eminence. And at other times - why not - he will question what the majority is doing.It is not a rough relationship of me against you, but there is also a we.The composition and orchestration of this piano concerto was made possible by a grant from the Senator for Culture of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. The 3rd movement 'Romanza' is expressive with a touch of reflective sadness. The last movement is a lightheated Jig with an obviously Irish twist. The Serenade is easily accessible and within the capacity of a good amateur orchestra.

One Second to the Future (Guitar Orchestra) Composer: Brent Robitaille  • “One Second to the Future†is a two-movement piece for either a single or optional double guitar orchestra with four separate parts for electric guitar and classical guitar. Two optional steel string guitar and electric bass parts are available but may be substituted if these instruments are unavailable. The total score will be around 500 measures with a running time of approximately 12-15 minutes. The piece is quite approachable for intermediate-level guitarists, with the more challenging sections arranged for the 1st and 2nd parts of the electric and classical guitar. Three overhead mics from the stage will be used to spatialize the sound into a stereo or surround sound system.  • The first movement starts with a fixed audio shortwave recording from the Canadian time signal shortwave station CHU, gently fading in for approximately 20 seconds before the guitar orchestra begins with natural and artificial harmonics.  • The second fixed audio track gently enters around the 1:00-minute mark. This track was recorded using eight amplified and non-amplified guitars in altered tunings with eight separate microphones to integrate into stereo or surround sound. The guitar's open strings were left to vibrate sympathetically as the volume increased and struck on the headstock with various rubber and metal sticks, violin bows or paint brushes to get the strings vibrating. The resulting wave files were then imported into a sampling program and filtered into the overtone series with “C†as the fundamental, emphasising the first 14 partials. This recording will be used intermittently throughout the first movement, acting primarily as a background pad.   • At approximately 3:00 minutes into the first movement, the players are asked to use a glass or metal slide to tap out rhythms based on the international Morse code. Several other standard slide guitar techniques are also integrated into this section. See instructions in the score. The first movement ends with both fixed audio tracks fading away.  • The second movement integrates a more traditional guitar playing and composition approach. Its bulk is at a robust tempo of 160 bpm and uses several rhythmic and timbral techniques, including sul tasto, sul ponticello, harmonics, golpe, string snaps, and the further use of guitar slides.  • Midway through the second movement, a rallentando proceeds to a section indicated by the tempo mark “slow motion.†At this point, a third fixed audio recording of a single vibrating guitar string slowed down by 3000% will fade in. The orchestra is instructed to play with this recording in slow motion or approximately 30 bpm. See score for details. Cherry trees in the morningNature has always inspired me. Every year during spring my family has the tradition to visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to experience the cherry blossoms. I usually do not remember many of my dreams but in this particular dream I was in Japan under an esplanade of cherry trees. I remember how amazed I feel and is for sure one of my most memorable dreams. II. DreamcatcherWhile I was writing the initial ideas of for the work I came across a Journal that explored how the use of a particular chord helped reduce nightmares in patients suffering from nightmare disorders. In the study, patients were exposed to the chord C69 (A C Major with the added 6th and 9th) during therapeutic sessions. This chord is used at the beginning of the movement as it moves to explore different sonorities. In this movement you might be able to hear a representation of the “heartbeat†played by the bass drum and timpani, then a more “stressful†section will come to represent a nightmare followed again by another repetition of the C69 chord. If you feel relaxed during the performance, it is on purpose! III. A Dance in the desertDreams, in my case, are usually a mix of different non-related things. For the final movement, I decided to use that idea. I started this dance with a “oriental†style and them throughout the middle of the movement I moved it to a waltz that was influenced by my grandfather. He used to have a small orchestra and he used to play waltzes during events and private parties.I hope the music takes you through a journey of musical emotions.Juan Guerra González

Having read many of the novels of Patrick O'Brian about the British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, I thought I would write music for a hypothetical film based on these novels. I started H.M.S. Surprise long before I learned that such a film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World was actually being made. I had neither seen the movie nor heard the music used in it.H.M.S. Surprise consists of two movements for chamber orchestra. The first, In the Harbour, serves as an introducton. It portrays an existence which is peaceful and devoid of the difficulties to be encountered later. To be sure, there is some back-street intrigue and romantic entanglement, but life is generally pleasant. The second movement, At Sea, immediately follows the first and is considerably longer and more programmatic. It begins with typical adventure at sea music and soon becomes an imitation of a sailor's hornpipe, begun by the flute. Next comes the storm or the battle or perhaps both at the same time. Calm returns and the sailors give thanks by singing a hymn. Thanksgiving turns to celebration as everyone on deck plays one tune or another, including even the Captain, Jack Aubrey, who plays the violin. Later Captain Aubrey and his friend, Steven Maturin, physician, spy and cellist, play a duet before the music comes to a rousing conclusion.

Legacy is a three-movement composition for chamber orchestra that makes social commentary on the issue of global warming. It was commission in 2007 by the Washington Sinfonietta, Rufus Jones, conductor and rewritten for chamber orchestra in 2023. I. Conflicts - This movement begins with a cry from native cultures admonishing our neglect of the environment. The cry is interspersed with debate regarding the seriousness of global warming (woodwinds). The debate grows stronger as the cries grow weaker. The debate isquieted by a measure of repeated chords that could be the words, stop it! stop it now!” A weak cry in the English Horn brings the introduction to a close. An Allegro section follows with a rhythmic and primitive sounding section representing the underdeveloped nations that are destroying the rain forests for economic gain. This material evolves into a more harmonic and contrapuntal section representing industrialized nations reluctant to change, also for economic reasons. Things quiet down as the music takes the listener to another part of the globe, East Asia. Conflict is again present in this section. The music returns to a varied restatement of the industrialized nations music before traveling to India for a section influenced by Raga. This section builds in dissonance until we hear the repeated stop it now chords from the introduction. A brief reprise of the cries brings the movement to a close. II. Consequences - This movement evokes a somber mood that is reflective of living in a climate of extremes. The movement is in arch form as it begins and ends with open harmony reflective of barren lands that once were fertile. The middle section serves as a climax expressing the harshness of the climate. Colleen McCullough's book, A Creed for the Third Millennium was a source of inspiration for this movement. III. Sacrifice and Compromise - The movement begins with a strong section that suggests progress. It is followed by a quieter and intense section that alternates lyrical lines over a staccato ostinato creating a sense of urgency. The opening section returns and is followed by a development of the ostinato section. This section is symbolic of how ideas need to be adapted in order for progress to be made. The opening section returns once more before leading into the concluding section where there is coming together of the instruments on a long lyrical line representing more and more people working together for change. The movement ends with a sense of triumph over adversity. Score prints on legal size paper and parts on letter.

I wrote Fantasy in the late spring of 2019. Before I could arrange a premier, the COVID-19 pandemic set in and everything stopped. I finally had the joy of premiering the piece on December 8, 2021, with my home team the Newport Symphony in Newport, Oregon, with Adam Flatt conducting. The audience was on their feet for both the matinee and the evening performances, so I guess they liked it! The piece is melodic, rhythmic, tonal, and just plain fun to play. It goes together easily. Each movement is about five and a half minutes, total play time about 17 minutes. It is appropriate for advanced student groups as well as professional groups. The first movement, Busy Day (Presto), makes repeated use of a four-note motif (G-F-A-D) and is a driving non-stop articulated melody. The second movement, Lullabye (Andante), opens and closes with the flute playing a brief cadenza, floating above an ambiguous chord in the strings. The bulk of the movement is a dovetailed hypnotic ostinato in the strings with a gentle rocking motion, and the simple flute melody above. The third movement, Wild Dreams (Presto), should be exactly that, wild and raucous, with heavy aggressive accents as indicated.For additional notes, see p. 2 of the PDF.The Youtube link above (Watch) is a recording I made at home in 2020 with my computer playing the string parts. This is the first movement, the second and third follow. It is my sincere hope that this piece will bring joy and exuberance for both the performers and the audience.
