Water, especially moving water, was always a vibrant part of my childhood, from playing in the small creek down the hill out my back door, to swimming and fishing at Deam Lake, riding riverboats along the Ohio, or enjoying the beaches. Water carries with it the promise of life, the power of nature. Ever Forward is written in three sections - Waves, Wreck and Work. Waves begins as woodwinds sing mellow tunes over the gentle ripples on languid waters in the strings. An abrupt, unannounced Wreck interrupts the relaxed excursion - the siren alarms blaring out against the havoc. Finally, just as sailors would pull together to tackle tough jobs, the community rallies together to Work out answers to the problems that have surfaced. Cellos start up Haul Away, Joe, a short-drag chantey (used mainly for tightening the sheet) where all hands haul together on the last ‘Joe’. More and more join in on the effort, bringing the piece to a spirited finale.

The Fallen – Flute Concerto (score – flute and string orchestra) MO163AScore in Three Movements (parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor44 pages - 18:00 minutes in length The Fallen for flute solo and strings composed by Mark O’Connor in three movements was commissioned by two different flutists for their respective music festivals in the summer of 2003; Marya Martin for the 20th anniversary of her Bridghampton Festival in New York, and Beth Ross-Buckley at her Camarada Festival in San Diego. The compositional process for the piece began for O’Connor in 2003, the very day the war was launched in Iraq. The piece was finished about three weeks later around the time the statues of the Iraqi dictator fell in Baghdad. This music is a reflection of the people who lost their lives in the war. This particular impact on his music makes for quite a different result from O’Connor’s usual optimism. However he finds a way to weave in a sense of a better future in the third movement. By transforming the tragic and darker qualities of the first movement’s themes, and making a departure from the quirky feet on the ground playfulness of the second movement, here O’Connor yearns and urges for a more beautiful world. The compositional process for the piece began for O’Connor in 2003, the very day the war was launched in Iraq. The piece was finished about three weeks later around the time the statues of the Iraqi dictator fell in Baghdad. This music is a reflection of the people who lost their lives in the war. This particular impact on his music makes for quite a different result from O’Connor’s usual optimism. However he finds a way to weave in a sense of a better future in the third movement. By transforming the tragic and darker qualities of the first movement’s themes, and making a departure from the quirky feet on the ground playfulness of the second movement, here O’Connor yearns and urges for a more beautiful world. Thierry Pélicant was born in 1957 at Sainte-Adresse, France. After studying the organ and the horn, his meeting with Jean-Claude Hartemann, the Musical Director of the Opéra Comique in Paris lead him to decide to explore conducting. He was the student of Haremann for fifteen years. He is the Musical Director of the André Messager Orchestre and has also directed the Orchestre Philharmonique de l’Oise since 1980, one of the oldest French orchestras, since it was founded in 1750. A passionate supporter of French music, Pélicant reconstructed the Messe solennelle of L.V.A Boïeldieu and Te Deum of 1792 by Philidor and premièred and recorded the Suite Parnassienne, Massenet’s last work. At the same time, he has also served the music of our time in premièring or recording the works of Dazzi, Marchand, Braconnier, Bénard, Drouin, Preschez, etc. As a composer, musical grammar and stylistic debates only interest him from afar. As a true gourmet (since cooking is another of his passions), he strives to write the music that pleases him, that would be enjoyable to play and which would be enjoyable to hear, hopefully with real pleasure and in which he tries to express the emotions and the pleasant or surprising states of being which, to hime, these works are tied. Through this process, he has created concertos (for oboe, for bassoon, for organ, for contrabass), Escales & paysages, ma monumental literary concerto for narrator, piano and orchestra, composed with his friend Dominique Preschez, Operas (Histoires comme ça, Ribouldingue, Élise et le fantôme) ; With the poet Luis Porquet, he wrote the song cycle Ombre légère (for soprano, harp and orchestre), Rhapsodie du Havre (for tenor and chamber orchestra, a commission from the Forum de Normandie to commemorate the 500 years of the founding of the city Le Havre), Et de toi, Bethleem, Christmas oratorio for baritone, chorus and orchestra and, finally, commissioned by the Orchestre de l’Oise in honor of the centennial of the First World War 14, fresque de la Grande Guerre, for the tenor Daniel Gà lvez-Vallejo, children’s chorus and orchestra. In the area of chamber music, he has written a sonata for horn and piano, for the Festival de Giverny, Borée, (quintet for oboe and strings), Sextuor d’été, , and Milonga, (septet inspired by the World of Tango Music). Published by Stephen J Rumbold (A0.941242). This is an adaptation of The Canadian Brass's famous arrangement for Horn Octet or Horn Choir with parts for optional bass guitar/tuba and drum set. Legend has it that their arranger, Luther Henderson, originally created it for a Royal Command Performance before Queen Elizabeth. In the preparation for the performance, The Canadian Brass was given a list of some of the Queen's favorite musical titles, and both When The Saints Go Marching in and Handel's Hallelujah Chorus were on that list - and the rest is history! The arrangement has parts for optional tuba/bass guitar and drum set, but plays well with just Horn Octet or Horn Choir. And, a tip 'o the hat to Herr Strauss for lending us a lustige streiche at measure 65. Chord symbols are included in some of the parts for those who might want to play some Dixie-style improvisation.
