'Prayer' is the third movement of my 5 movement Symphony-The Art of Imaginal Listening under way since 2009. This 'Prayer' has a wordless Female Chorus,a solo cellist and a modest orchestra of: Oboe, English Horn,2 Clarinets,2 Horns, Harp, and Strings.It was inspired by several sources, which all seem to have played themselves out, as the work involved an extended spritual struggle.You could say it was the struggle of someone who was not a believer,but who might have liked to be.The text of the chorus was erased,and became wordless. A symbolic of this spritual struggle.

It's lively melodies, lush string beds, and mesmerizing harmonies will keep you thoroughly engaged. As you are preparing for your journey, the escalating strings propel you forward and raise you up in the sky. Soon following, the wind gently keeps you afloat as the slight gusts (invoked by the escalating winds) push you forward and higher. Eventually, you hit a tornado (sporadic harmony changes) and snowstorm as you fighting for your life. Eventually, the sailing gets easier as you soon approach clear skies; and, the anticipation keeps rising as you eventually reach the home stretch. Would work great as an opening or closing to a concert. For performance, some sections may need to be slowed down maybe to make it less taxing on players. The key is momentum and minimal hand motion possibly for string parts. Scored for chamber orchestra. MP3 sample is included for your listening pleasure.

Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.1308171). I have long wanted to compose an homage to Jean Sibelius. However, his music is copyright protected in the EU for another five years or so. Thus, I struggled with how to compose a work without any direct musical quotations, and yet which in some way captures the essence of his symphonic music. I had a breakthrough in recent weeks, and the result is an eleven-minute orchestral composition which manages to invoke his music without directly quoting it. The opening passage on which the piece is based invokes the opening of Symphony No. 6 without quoting it; also, my homage is in the key of A Minor whereas the symphony is in the key of D minor. The piece also invokes the orchestral colors of one of my other favorite pieces of Sibelius, The Swan of Tuonela. My composition is scored very closely to that one, but I ended up using two oboes; I never needed an English Horn, and I added two flutes to that scoring. Thus, the instrumentation is as follows: 2fl-2ob-1cl/bcl-2bn-4hn-3tbn-timp-bd-str; the duration is ca. 11:30. My homage also invokes the more youthful compositions of the great master, and of course features his biggest personal influence, the sounds of nature. Sibelius was a master of musical forms. He managed to create entirely original forms such as the one for Symphony No. 7. While I do not pretend to be in his league in any way, I did manage to compose a work in a four-part form, which is unusual, and not the least of which for me. The piece contains all kinds of indirect references to the music of Sibelius through the use of motifs, melodies, harmonies, ornamentation, and orchestration.While not the most original piece of music I have ever composed (that would be The City In the Sea: Choral Tone Poem), my Homage to Sibelius is among the most subtle of my works in that it contains a good deal of variation technique, and a lot of attention to detail. Like my Homage to Vaughan Williams for string orchestra, the idea was not to break new stylistic ground, but rather to pay homage to the ground broken by the master. More so than anything, my Homage to Sibelius invokes how the symphonic music of Sibelius makes me feel when I am listening to it. Submitted for 2015 Areon Flutes International Chamber Music Composition Competition, ‘Press Play’ was composed for internationally renowned bassoonist Scott Pool. When I was growing up in the 1980s, I had a rather large cassette tape collection with many different types of music; my friends and I spent much of our time browsing through each other’s sets and listening to diverse rock albums. ‘Press Play’ is designed to represent the format of an EP album, though the music contained is a mix of styles. Track 1 is a chorale-style introductory movement that features the bassoon in brief solo passages between the chordal string sections. Hit Single is basically a pop song for bassoon and strings. In Deep Cut, the instruments explore a slow contrapuntal texture; the title refers to an obscure type of track on an album that radio stations are less likely to air, except perhaps on late night shows. Deep Cut accelerates in the second half, and moves almost directly into Hidden Track, named for a type of song that some albums hide after all the popular songs are over. Hidden Track also features an acceleration from beginning to end, and has a style and format similar to process music.

Au Moment… is for improviser(s) and chamber orchestra and was a commissioned from Gérard and Nicole Gouye for the multi-instrumental Resonance Duo. The work is dedicated to the conductor, Paul Méfano. The duration is about 20'. The part of the improviser(s) is entirely improvised while the orchestra plays from a written score which includes an open architecture that can be altered to create a different performing and listening experience each time. Any instrument may be used by the soloist(s). For the premiere of this piece, Resonance Duo played the following instruments: Drake Mabry – oboe with a small miniature saxophone mouthpiece, a wooden soprano saxophone and soprano to contrabass bamboo clarinets. Catherine Schneider played piano both on the keyboard and inside along with percussion instruments from Africa and the Middle East. The work, in three movements was premiered by Resonance Duo with the Ensemble 2e2m conducted by Paul Méfano at the Pompidou Center in Paris on January 29, 1996.

Au Moment… is for improviser(s) and chamber orchestra and was a commissioned from Gérard and Nicole Gouye for the multi-instrumental Resonance Duo. The work is dedicated to the conductor, Paul Méfano. The duration is about 20'. The part of the improviser(s) is entirely improvised while the orchestra plays from a written score which includes an open architecture that can be altered to create a different performing and listening experience each time. Any instrument may be used by the soloist(s). For the premiere of this piece, Resonance Duo played the following instruments: Drake Mabry – oboe with a small miniature saxophone mouthpiece, a wooden soprano saxophone and soprano to contrabass bamboo clarinets. Catherine Schneider played piano both on the keyboard and inside along with percussion instruments from Africa and the Middle East. The work, in three movements was premiered by Resonance Duo with the Ensemble 2e2m conducted by Paul Méfano at the Pompidou Center in Paris on January 29, 1996.
