It is dedicated to Marisa Green.The work is inspired by a poem (Desiring the Solicitude of Rain) by American poet Kathleen Wakefield. The landscape of rich imagery in Wakefield's poem drives the extra-musical inspiration of this work. Musical material from the earlier vocal work is re-imagined in a purely orchestral context.Wakefield's poem contains images and messages of love and journey amidst the desire for the coming of rain. It is these ideas which provided the poetic conception of the work. Throughout the piece, the winds and brass play an extensive lyric and melodic role. A strand of singing lyricism runs throughout. Instruments are always exploring and highlighting theresonances in melodic and contrapuntal lines of other instruments. The work is cast in three sections (slow-fast-slow) plus a coda. The opening section begins with a forceful gesture that returns throughout the work as a signal. A melodic idea (containing the basic material of the work) is presented in the clarinet and it is developed throughout the rest ofthe section. A faster section emerges in a burst of energy as instruments hocket off each other.The next section is marked slow, ritualistic. The strings create an otherworldly harmonic cloud of gradually shifting and overlapping harmonies. Through this cloud, bassoon, trumpet,and flute solos emerge. Finally, the opening music is recalled in the coda as the potential energy continues to build. Quintet for Bassoon and Strings (2005–08) was commissioned by The Commission Projectand is dedicated to Klaus Heymann, in tribute for his invigoration of the classical recordingindustry and his enthusiastic support for the composers of our time.The original conception for the work was devised during an extremely foggy week onNantucket Island, Massachusetts in the summer of 2005. It is music deeply connected to theocean landscape. Throughout the work, the strings often present a fog-like backdrop,through which the bassoon’s color emerges like a lighthouse beacon—lyrical and flexible.The work opens with a series of interlocking, nebulous figurations in the strings thatgradually build in intensity. The bassoon unfolds the work’s basic melodic material in a freesolo that also increases in intensity. At the point of climax, the tempo suddenly slowsdramatically, and a tender, lyrical cantilena emerges. As this music dissolves, a bouncy andenergetic music takes the foreground. It climaxes in a bassoon cadenza. Though the bassoonhas played the leader throughout, this is the first time it is heard unaccompanied. A brief,but vigorous afterglow recalls the opening of the work. The final section emerges out of it: aseries of high, distant harmonics (perhaps harbor buoys) in the strings through which thebassoon sings a final song.

Many Russian elements influenced Bryars when he was writing the piece, not least the text for the bass voices which is taken from Glinka’s song cycle Farewell to St Petersburg. Bryars writes ‘The orchestration is quite light throughout, so that the singing quality of the double bass can emerge. The emphasis in terms of tessitura is on the middle register, though in the closing section there is a passage in natural harmonics. The concerto is in three movements. The first is lively, playful and folk-like, but is interspersed with suspenseful and thoughtful interludes.After a brief introduction, the main soulful theme of the second movement emerges, setting the mood for most of the movement. There is a another appearance of the introductory material, which is further developed, before the return of the main musical idea.The last movement has a sense of restlessness and anxiety, the music being fragmented and rhythmic, ending with a solo cadenza, and brief orchestral coda.

Celebrate women scientists!Metamorphosis (2019) by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) for flute, harp, and string orchestra, commissioned by Balcones Community Orchestra, celebrates the life and work of Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), pioneering entomologist, naturalist, and artist.Duration 5:30 minutes.Commissioned by the Balcones Community Orchestra of Austin, Texas, Metamorphosis (2019) by Adrienne Inglis for solo flute, solo harp, and string orchestra, honors the life and work of pioneering entomologist, naturalist, and artist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717). As she carefully documented in illustrated detail the life cycle of so many insects, Metamorphosis musically follows a butterfly from adult, egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The piece opens with an ostinato pattern in the strings over which the flute and harp play fluttering modal melodies. The strings and harp represent the egg stage with minimalistic layers of a single pitch. To recognize Merian’s time in Suriname and her discovery of many insect species there, a cheerful tune fashioned after traditional Arawak folk songs informs the busy larvae in the caterpillar canon. A bit of contemplative dorian polyphony laced with metamorphic machinations demonstrate the remarkable transformation of the pupa as well as Merian’s time at a devout Labadist religious commune. The butterfly emerges from the pupa with a flute/harp cadenza and then the strings underscore the adult butterfly with a return of the ostinato. The composition of Metamorphosis for chamber orchestra began in the Fall of 1985 and was completed in February of 1986 when the composer was just 26. This score represents a newly revised edition done in 2022. Every effort was made to maintain the original intention of the piece. Metamorphosis is a work that conveys the essence of transformation and change. It explores the emotional and sonic journey of a metamorphic process, capturing the stages of evolution, growth, and eventual emergence. Metamorphosis represents a brief early period in the composer’s output where a more dissonant harmonic language was used or where the tonality becomes more ambiguous. The composition begins with a sense of anticipation, using subtle and mysterious musical elements to represent the initial state before transformation. In the opening bars for instance, one hears a suggestion of the Scriabin “mystic†chord which also loosely serves as the basis of the piece.. A brief hat-tipping moment is where a few bars of the Ravel string quartet is paraphrased (listen for it!). An instructional Chamber Orchestra work written for beginning strings and early intermediate winds. This work is in 6/4 time. The string parts (depicting the bubbles that are seen as the Platypus are submerged) have been written where they are either using the open strings or the patterns are repeated over several bars so that beginning students are able to focus on the challenges of the 6/4 time. Mapping which beat each string part falls on is helpful when starting to teach this piece. Platypus are shy in nature and do not normally cohabit in the same location in large numbers. This piece was written as the composer observed an unusually large number of Platypus in one location. The wind parts depict the Platypus as they surfaced and descended in the billabong where they lived and as they happened to meet another Platypus or come up where she was sitting they quickly retreated with a loud splash. This is heard throughout the piece. Parts are available.
