One Second to the Future (Guitar Orchestra) Composer: Brent Robitaille  • “One Second to the Future†is a two-movement piece for either a single or optional double guitar orchestra with four separate parts for electric guitar and classical guitar. Two optional steel string guitar and electric bass parts are available but may be substituted if these instruments are unavailable. The total score will be around 500 measures with a running time of approximately 12-15 minutes. The piece is quite approachable for intermediate-level guitarists, with the more challenging sections arranged for the 1st and 2nd parts of the electric and classical guitar. Three overhead mics from the stage will be used to spatialize the sound into a stereo or surround sound system.  • The first movement starts with a fixed audio shortwave recording from the Canadian time signal shortwave station CHU, gently fading in for approximately 20 seconds before the guitar orchestra begins with natural and artificial harmonics.  • The second fixed audio track gently enters around the 1:00-minute mark. This track was recorded using eight amplified and non-amplified guitars in altered tunings with eight separate microphones to integrate into stereo or surround sound. The guitar's open strings were left to vibrate sympathetically as the volume increased and struck on the headstock with various rubber and metal sticks, violin bows or paint brushes to get the strings vibrating. The resulting wave files were then imported into a sampling program and filtered into the overtone series with “C†as the fundamental, emphasising the first 14 partials. This recording will be used intermittently throughout the first movement, acting primarily as a background pad.   • At approximately 3:00 minutes into the first movement, the players are asked to use a glass or metal slide to tap out rhythms based on the international Morse code. Several other standard slide guitar techniques are also integrated into this section. See instructions in the score. The first movement ends with both fixed audio tracks fading away.  • The second movement integrates a more traditional guitar playing and composition approach. Its bulk is at a robust tempo of 160 bpm and uses several rhythmic and timbral techniques, including sul tasto, sul ponticello, harmonics, golpe, string snaps, and the further use of guitar slides.  • Midway through the second movement, a rallentando proceeds to a section indicated by the tempo mark “slow motion.†At this point, a third fixed audio recording of a single vibrating guitar string slowed down by 3000% will fade in. The orchestra is instructed to play with this recording in slow motion or approximately 30 bpm. See score for details. Celebrate women scientists!Metamorphosis (2019) by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) for flute, harp, and string orchestra, commissioned by Balcones Community Orchestra, celebrates the life and work of Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), pioneering entomologist, naturalist, and artist.Duration 5:30 minutes.Commissioned by the Balcones Community Orchestra of Austin, Texas, Metamorphosis (2019) by Adrienne Inglis for solo flute, solo harp, and string orchestra, honors the life and work of pioneering entomologist, naturalist, and artist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717). As she carefully documented in illustrated detail the life cycle of so many insects, Metamorphosis musically follows a butterfly from adult, egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The piece opens with an ostinato pattern in the strings over which the flute and harp play fluttering modal melodies. The strings and harp represent the egg stage with minimalistic layers of a single pitch. To recognize Merian’s time in Suriname and her discovery of many insect species there, a cheerful tune fashioned after traditional Arawak folk songs informs the busy larvae in the caterpillar canon. A bit of contemplative dorian polyphony laced with metamorphic machinations demonstrate the remarkable transformation of the pupa as well as Merian’s time at a devout Labadist religious commune. The butterfly emerges from the pupa with a flute/harp cadenza and then the strings underscore the adult butterfly with a return of the ostinato. Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.1308171). I have long wanted to compose an homage to Jean Sibelius. However, his music is copyright protected in the EU for another five years or so. Thus, I struggled with how to compose a work without any direct musical quotations, and yet which in some way captures the essence of his symphonic music. I had a breakthrough in recent weeks, and the result is an eleven-minute orchestral composition which manages to invoke his music without directly quoting it. The opening passage on which the piece is based invokes the opening of Symphony No. 6 without quoting it; also, my homage is in the key of A Minor whereas the symphony is in the key of D minor. The piece also invokes the orchestral colors of one of my other favorite pieces of Sibelius, The Swan of Tuonela. My composition is scored very closely to that one, but I ended up using two oboes; I never needed an English Horn, and I added two flutes to that scoring. Thus, the instrumentation is as follows: 2fl-2ob-1cl/bcl-2bn-4hn-3tbn-timp-bd-str; the duration is ca. 11:30. My homage also invokes the more youthful compositions of the great master, and of course features his biggest personal influence, the sounds of nature. Sibelius was a master of musical forms. He managed to create entirely original forms such as the one for Symphony No. 7. While I do not pretend to be in his league in any way, I did manage to compose a work in a four-part form, which is unusual, and not the least of which for me. The piece contains all kinds of indirect references to the music of Sibelius through the use of motifs, melodies, harmonies, ornamentation, and orchestration.While not the most original piece of music I have ever composed (that would be The City In the Sea: Choral Tone Poem), my Homage to Sibelius is among the most subtle of my works in that it contains a good deal of variation technique, and a lot of attention to detail. Like my Homage to Vaughan Williams for string orchestra, the idea was not to break new stylistic ground, but rather to pay homage to the ground broken by the master. More so than anything, my Homage to Sibelius invokes how the symphonic music of Sibelius makes me feel when I am listening to it. In 1785, he composed a Masonic funeral music. This short but extremely poignant work is often seen as a stepping-stone between the Great Mass in C minor and the Requiem. Despite being considered one of Mozart's absolute masterpieces, it is rarely performed due to the uniqueness of its original orchestration: 2 Oboes, 1 Clarinet, 3 Basset Horns, 1 Contrabassoon, 2 Horns, Strings.An ideal orchestral introduction to Mozart’s Requiem KV 626, it is however virtually never performed in the same program, due to the completely different orchestrations and keys of the two pieces. This arrangement makes the Masonic Funeral Music match with the key (D minor) and the uniquely peculiar orchestration of the Requiem (2 Basset Horns, 2 Bassoons, 2 Trumpets, Timpani, 3 Trombones, Strings), recreating the nuances of the original piece with the colors of Mozart’s last composition.

Pretty How Town, a perky and rhythmically complex piece, is based on the poem - anyone lived in a pretty how town by e.e.cummings. The more laid back Landscape before sunrise is based on a setting of many ways in which the world says Goodnight and is inspired by the view from the composer's 18th floor flat in Aldgate East overlooking a multicultural population. The rhythms of the original song Goodnight follow the phrases in each language: Good Night, buona notte, gute Nacht, kali nykhta, oyasumi nasai, nos da...etc Little Laser Lady, an upbeat end to the suite, is based on a poem by a friend of the composer, whose girlfriend (and wife to be) would always visit him in her Laser (a make of car in Australia) (She is the sun in the afternoon, she is the night's familiar, she comes on a beam of yellow gold light......) The orchestration is: Piccolo [except in the 4th movement], 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, Clarinet, Bassoon and string orchestra including double bass. The pdf file contains the score and separate parts. Qui sedes - Duet for Soprano and Alto from Mass in G Major - Fullscore and PartsCarlos Seixas (1704-1742) was a Portuguese composer and organist who had close contact with the avant-garde European music of his time. Despite never leaving Portugal, Seixas collaborated with Domenico Scarlatti, who was the chapel master of the Portuguese court. Seixas is considered the most important Portuguese baroque composer of keyboard music. Although none of his original works survived, he is credited with composing approximately 700 toccatas. Of these, only ninety-five survived in authenticated sources, along with other instrumental pieces and ten complete vocal works, including the Mass in G major. This mass is written for four soloists (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass), choir, and strings. It is divided into five parts: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. In addition to the choral sections, this piece also includes four arias, one for each soloist, two duets for soprano and alto, and a trio for soprano, alto, and tenor.

Throughout his career, Stock has beena tireless and generous advocate on behalf of new music and living composers. This work isdedicated to him in tribute – as both an important American composer and a significantcontributor to America’s contemporary musical life.The work’s basic source material is the plainchant Ave maris stella (“Hail, star of the seaâ€) –appropriate because of Duquesne’s standing and history as a Catholic university. When thecomposition of this work first began, the original plan was for a celebratory and vibrant piece.As the planning progressed, however, personal circumstances intervened and began to changethe work’s tone – becoming substantially bleaker and more obsessive.The title of the first movement, Pentimento, is defined as “an underlying image in a painting,as an earlier painting, that shows through when the top layer of paint has become transparentwith age.†The melodic and harmonic material for the movement is entirely drawn from theplainchant source, although it is completely transformed and covered up – as in a pentimento.At various points, one can begin to hear the original plainchant “peek out†in subtle ways.The opening section of the movement obsesses again and again on what sounds like a“beginning†– as though it is trying to begin again and again. After a brief bassoon cadenza, afast and driving section starts, marked “sinister.†After driving through a series oftransformations on the plainchant material, a bridge passage leads to further attempts at the“beginning†again. Finally, these attempts are given up, and the plainchant material (theunderlying layer) begins to show through quietly – in preparation for the next movement.In the second movement, Interrupted Motet, the plainchant theme is used in a morestraightforward fashion. After the opening declamatory statements, the following sectionsmove between more free developmental techniques, based on the first movement’stransformations, and “motet†sections – using cantus firmus methods and textures fromRenaissance music. The tone and palate is, however, much darker and more obsessive.There is a brooding ponderousness to these contrapuntal developments. Paolo Bellomio, Unveristy of Montreal, Canada, 2 March 2012Preface:In the early 1890s, Debussy composed the opening of a lyrical piece in E major for violin and piano, perhaps as a shorter companion piece for the violin Nocturne he was planning for the Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. After Debussy’s death in 1918, his second wife Emma often gave away sketch pages to performers or composers as memorials to her beloved husband , and this particular page was given to the Cuban born pianist and composer Joaquin Nin (1879-1949). It came up for sale in the catalogue of the British antiquarian dealer Lisa Cox in 2010 and although it might possibly be an early song for contralto and piano, the more dynamic idea in bar 12 strongly suggests the violin, especially as it begins on an open D string. Moreover, there is no text and in pieces of this length, Debussy usually wrote at least one word in, if only to remind himself where he had got to in any song. So my starting point was a complete 12-bar melody gently undulating in the violin’s lowest register over a sensual accompaniment, rising to a climax in bar 12 and giving me a contrasting idea that I could use as a link between sections and in the cadenza. As the B section (bars 14-26) derives directly from Debussy’s opening theme by metamorphosis, my own additions were restricted to the central section (bars 27-57) - comprising a new scherzando idea (C) and the more lyrical D (bars 36-46). C returns at bar 47, followed by the opening sections in reverse order, so that the Sérénade begins and ends with Debussy’s material and is cast in arch form (ABCDCBA). Robert OrledgeBrighton, 19 June 2019Robert Orledge was born in Bath in 1948 and educated at Clare College, Cambridge, where he gained his doctorate for his study of the composer Charles Kœchlin in 1973. Between 1971 and 1991 He rose from Lecturer to Professor in the Music Department of the University of Liverpool, publishing books on Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy, Charles Kœchlin and Erik Satie, as well as numerous articles, editions and reviews. As a historical musicologist, Professor Orledge specialized in the way composers composed, ,and since taking early retirement in 2004, he has concentrated on completing and orchestrating Debussy’s unfinished works, and especially his theatre projects. His completion of Debussy’s opera The Fall of the House of Usher (1908-17) was successfully premiered at the Bregenz Opera Festival in Austria in August 2006 and has since been performed in America, Portugal Germany and Holland, as well as being broadcast throughout Europe. His call for scores was for (if memory serves) works for chamber orchestra under eight seconds in duration. That is arguably the most unusual call for scores to which the composer has ever or will ever respond. Consider the resultant composition a novelty piece that is only six seconds in duration. If any orchestra performs this work, it is sure to illicit laughter in the audience even though, interestingly enough, the music itself is anything but humorous-sounding. The title is taken from the fact that the composer took the word decade and ran it backwards to get the main and only theme of the piece (E-D-A-C-E-D). Perhaps this brief piece will serve as the basis for a larger work one day. Who knows? It's an attractive little thing. In the meantime, enjoy! (PS: it is painful to charge more than $2.00 for six seconds of music, but if SMP Press ever prints an order, I have to make it worth their while, rather than costing them money.).
