I met Sharon Roffman in the fall of 2011 when maestro Steven Lipsitt and the Boston Classical Orchestra premiered my Symphony No. 8 … The City of Light at Faneuil Hall in Boston, Massachusetts. Sharon was the featured concerto soloist on the same program. She was an electrifying soloist in concertos by Mozart and Haydn, respectively. She wowed every one with her chops and musicality! A year later I went to hear Sharon and the BCO again, and this time I said to Steven Lipsitt that I want to write a concerto for Sharon. He thought it was great idea, and so did she. The title Serenade Rondo has the same acronym as Sharon Roffman. So in this case, the form precedes the composition. Originally I had planned to compose the concerto in the usual three-movement format. And I thought I was going to make the last movement a rondo, something in the usual ABACA thing. But as I proceeded with the composition, I realized that the work was moving in such a way that the whole thing could be conceived of as a rondo. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.723064). His is an arrangement by the composer of his Rondo in A minor (originally written for Guitar and Orchestra) for Cello and Orchestra. There is also a version arranged for Viola and Orchestra. In October, 2014, after my most recent commission, the creative juices were still flowing, and I felt the urge to write a work for guitar and orchestra (which I had always wanted to do, partly inspired by the memories Pepe Romero's performances with my orchestra forty years earlier). Amazingly, within two days I had, except for a few minor corrections, a completed work. The result was the Rondo in A minor for Guitar and Orchestra, which I dedicated to my friend, Sir Pepe Romero, with the greatest respect and admiration. In December of 2014, I realized the work was easily accessible for either viola or cello and created versions of the piece for solo cello and orchestra, and also a version for solo viola and orchestra. The work is rondo-like in form, but does not strictly follow all the rules. The form of the work is a kind of a musical palindrome: A B A C A D A C A B A (including a cadenza in the final rondo statement). The presence of castanets gives the work a bit of a Spanish flair. The piece is scored for pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets in A, bassoons, horns, and trumpets in C; with timpani, castanets, and strings (8,8,5,5,3). Parts for clarinets and trumpets in B-flat are included in the set for those orchestras lacking clarinets in A or trumpets in C.

Key: D major.Mozart schrieb das Rondo C-dur, KV 373 für Violine und Orchester 1781 für Antonio Brunetti, dem Konzertmeister der Salzburger Kapelle. Bereits im selben Jahr wurde das Werk von Brunetti aufgeführt; gedruckt wurde es aber erst 1800, neun Jahre nach Mozarts Tod. Ein Jahr später erschien eine nach D-dur transponierte Fassung für Querflöte und Orchester. Zur Zeit der Klassik war das Uminstrumentieren eigener oder fremder Werke nicht mehr so üblich wie im Barock. Aber es gibt noch genügend Beispiele; gerade Mozart liefert den besten Beweis (KV 413). Im Gegensatz zu der Ausgabe von 1801 ist die vorliegende Fassung enger am Originaltext orientiert, behält aber die Transposition nach D-dur bei; die Praxis hat gezeigt, dass die Querflöte in der D-dur-Fassung besser klingt.

Beethoven's Romance No. 1 in G major for violin and orchestra op. 40 (c. 1801) was transposed in C major, arranged in the new key and appropriate tempo, and expanded to form a rondo Finale fit for his unfinished Concerto in C major, of which only about a half of a clean copy of the first movement survived as WoO 5 (1791-1792). Also, a newly composed solo cadenza was now inserted. Almost surely, the Romance No. 2 in F major op. 50 (c. 1791?) was intended as the slow movement of the Concerto (it has virtually the same scoring as WoO 5, the manuscript bears no title, and there is a thematic relation to WoO 5). The Romance No. 1 in G major was probably intended as a replacement or alternate slow movement, but it is his only composition relatable to the Concerto fragment, so I adapted it as conjecture Finale for a complete performing version of the Concerto.
