The Hunt is the title track to my modern, classical crossover, concept album, The Hunt. The Hunt is the hunt of life, hunting for health, for life, for happiness, for love, for ideas, for creativity, for success. The song represents the drive, the moving, the launch, that hope, that happiness, when you set out to do something in your life.From the album booklet (as it's a concept album, each song, though independent, has an overarching story):The effort has paid off. The day is here.The mood is happy. Success awaits. Let's go.Let's do it. It's sitting there for the taking.I'm in the zone. I'm in the flow. The huntress has shown me the bounty,and I'm ready to take it, to receive it, to enjoy it. I deserve it.Though it was written with larger groups in mind or small orchestras, keeping it in a way quite simple, it can most likely be played with 2 clarinets, a cello, and a trumpet. I can imagine it can work quite nicely with a school orchestra or any small ensemble, even if some might need to make some minor adjustments to how it's played. It's meant to be played in an upbeat and happy fashion, and the trumpet should be sexy and fun. It'll be fun to hear how others interpret it.The PDF includes the full score and all 4 individual parts (Clarinet, Clarinet Section in Bb, Cellos, Trumpet Section in Bb). Composed in an overture style, the piece begins with a powerful introductory statement pedaling onBb major. After the introduction, the second theme is introduced by the violin 1 section. The B sectionbegins at Rehearsal B, featuring a light, legato approach. The piece picks back up at Rehearsal C with another rousing statement of the first theme, and propels itself to a thrilling close with a restatement of the introduction. Have fun! I hope you enjoy playing and rehearsing this piece as much as I did writing it, and you are certain to have something to celebrate after a performance of this piece!

I met Sharon Roffman in the fall of 2011 when maestro Steven Lipsitt and the Boston Classical Orchestra premiered my Symphony No. 8 … The City of Light at Faneuil Hall in Boston, Massachusetts. Sharon was the featured concerto soloist on the same program. She was an electrifying soloist in concertos by Mozart and Haydn, respectively. She wowed every one with her chops and musicality! A year later I went to hear Sharon and the BCO again, and this time I said to Steven Lipsitt that I want to write a concerto for Sharon. He thought it was great idea, and so did she. The title Serenade Rondo has the same acronym as Sharon Roffman. So in this case, the form precedes the composition. Originally I had planned to compose the concerto in the usual three-movement format. And I thought I was going to make the last movement a rondo, something in the usual ABACA thing. But as I proceeded with the composition, I realized that the work was moving in such a way that the whole thing could be conceived of as a rondo. The life of Fitch was so remarkable and has so much to teach us about the illusory America in which so many of us believe that it would make for a riveting motion picture if the novel could be turned into a film script. It would be lovely if the music could be used in such a motion picture project, but I doubt it will ever come to that. I rather think I'll end up pretty much like my Uncle John (Fitch really was my fifth great grandmother's brother) - broken and impecunious after a life of trying passionately to accomplish something worthwhile. The bitter irony is that Fitch's talent did lie in an eminently practical field, as steam-powered transportation and technology was cutting edge by the early nineteenth century when people like Robert Fulton profited handsomely from Uncle John's ideas. But Fitch was a visionary whose work far exceeded the narrow perceptions and self-interest of his countrymen - including such founding fathers as Franklin and Jefferson! Sadly, John Fitch intentionally -or perhaps accidentally -committed suicide by overdosing on an opium-based pain medication which, in combination with his drinking, proved to be fatal.
