The Symphony No. 9 in E minor, From the New World, Op. 95, B. 17, popularly known as the New World Symphony, was composed by Antonin Dvořák in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It is by far his most popular symphony, and one of the most popular of all symphonies. Neil Armstrong took a recording of the New World Symphony to the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission, the first Moon landing, in 1969. The symphony was completed in the building that now houses the Bily Clocks Museum.

Only the 1st ‘cello part has sections in tenor clef and goes to C above middle C. All other parts in are in bass clef and do not go above 4th position. If played by a 'cello choir the divisi markings in the 5th 'cello part should be observed, otherwise the lower part is advised. Note from the arranger: All my arrangements for 'cello quartet, quintet and sextet are conceived specifically with the range and technical capabilities of the 'cello in mind - no simple transpositions or re-orchestrations of string quartet scores. They are therefore both easily playable and enjoyable by any intermediate to advanced 'cello ensemble. Most parts do not go beyond 4th position, making them equally suitable for student, mixed ability groups or ‘cello choirs. A complete score and set of individual parts is included. Moderato, II. Lento misterioso, III. Rondo Spirito The Moderato unfolds in the standard sonata-allegro form. It explores some divergent elements: a lyrical Dorian principal theme, a terse Phrygian subordinate theme subjected to extreme compression in an asymmetrical meter, and a brief closing theme - again in Dorian. The development section presents fragmented variations of the themes and a new theme essentially extracted from the transition. The recapitulation proceeds as usual, with the secondary theme appearing in tonic - in this case, G Dorian. The principal theme's final statements appear in the closing theme's rhythm. A coda based on a fragment of the closing theme ends the movement. The Lento misterioso is an elegiac ternary construction that introduces quartal/quintal harmony and modal exploration. The contrasting B section involves an agitato passage that investigates Phrygian relations. The Rondo Spirito is a simple Rondo: ABACABA. The impetus of the movement derives from elements of the previous two movements: quartal/quintal harmony from the Lento and asymmetrical meter from the Moderato. Other elements appearing in this piece are cycles of thirds, modal explorations, and extended range. Â
