J'attends le vainqueur [What are you doing there, little girl, With those freshly cut flowers ? What are you doing there, young girl, With those dried flowers ? What are you doing there, pretty woman, With those faded flowers ? What are you doing there, old woman, With those dying flowers ? I'm waiting for the victorious one] In my mind there were initially several possible interpretations of the poem My original thoughts were that le vainqueur means the conquering Christ and that the woman is waiting all her life with flowers before a church - waiting in vain for her saviour another possibility is that the woman is waiting for the winner of her affections it could even be that le vainqueur refers to the invading German army but this would not explain the fact that she waits all her life but, finally, as Raphaèle Larazoni suggests, (and more plausibly in view of other poems by Prévert) the vainqueur is simply the winner in a war - there is never really a winner in a war, so the woman waits all her life in vain.

The first was Eurydice, a tone poem on the Orpheus myth for cello and orchestra, and the second was La Chimera Fantastica for the DÃaz Trio. Canções e Sambinhas is in four movements. I. Canção de amor ... II. Sambinha bachiana ... III. Valsa lenta ... IV. Mais uma vêz ... Having lived in Brazil during my teen-age years, I inevitably continue to return to the wonderful music of that country for inspiration: the chôros of Ernesto Nazareth, Jacob do Bandolim, Pixinginha, and Heitor Villa-Lobos. The first movement begins with a slow, dark introduction before the love song emerges .... The second movement is a lively samba. As the title indicates, it is a little samba infused with Bach-like counterpoint, although a bit crazier. Villa-Lobos might find this amusing .... The third movement is a slow meditation for the cello on a passacaglia-like theme in the piano. The last movement, Mais uma vêz (meaning One Mo' Time in English), is a samba like the second movement, but it is set more homophonically, more dance-like in character .... Programme Notes: Icarus Also Flew takes its title from the first line of the poem Failing and Flying by Jack Gilbert. He is referring to the classical myth of Daedalus and Icarus, an inventive father and son who bravely escape from their imprisonment in a tower by collecting the disposed feathers of seabirds, then fashion wings out of them and fly away. While the story is often treated as a morality tale--listen to your elders, don’t get cocky like the young man, Icarus, who, in such an understandable state of elation, ascended too close to the sun thus causing the wings to melt and his tumbling to his Mediterranean death--what Jack Gilbert reminds us is how regardless of one’s failure, the sheer transcendental experience of mortal flight remains glorious and unforgettable. Icarus’s fall was not into a legacy of disdain and oblivion, but in truth, he had come to the end of his triumph. This piece was the first of a series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies--his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!--though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his celebrated fifth symphony in C minor--the Fate symphony, as it is commonly known. I’ll let the listener find their own connections.About the Composer:Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Great Is Thy Faithfulness is a popular hymn that originated in 1923 as a poem written by Thomas Chisholm, which was then set to music by William Runyan. It remains one of the world's most beloved hymns today, so you can't go wrong having this one in your gig books! I originally wrote this solo cello arrangement to play for a Christian funeral, but it will also be perfect for church services or any other occasion you need some soul-stirring worship music.
