A book of solos for cello. Includes 15 songs (Celtic tunes, classical themes, folk melodies) for the beginner cellist. Created for students using Suzuki and similar methods. For students who play in first position only, and for those beginning to learn shifting.What makes this book special?
It includes:
1. Pieces in the low register of the cello. Beginner books often focus on the A and D strings.
2. More lyrical pieces, meaning more song-like, more Romantic than Baroque style.
3. A teacher accompaniment part. The students find it enjoyable, and it teaches them how important it is to listen and to play in time, in tune, and with dynamics. Can also be used for recitals.
4. Familiar tunes. What is familiar to one person is unknown to others, but I tried to put in pieces that many people would be familiar with.
5. Shifting with familiar tunes. When I was a student, I found it easier to learn a shift if the piece was familiar. My ear knew where to go. I have included a few pieces with two versions: first position and shifting . The student can learn the first position version and then be able to learn shifting with a familiar tune.
6. There is plenty of empty space on the pages for teachers to add markings.

Song Of The Liberty Bell for unaccompanied cello was composed by Mark O?Connor and used as the theme song for the critically acclaimed PBS documentary, ?Liberty! The American Revolution?. O?Connor wrote the piece to include three different instrument groupings - unaccompanied solo, folk ensemble, and string orchestra. The Sony Classical album ?Liberty!? features ?Song Of The Liberty Bell? in all three arrangements with Yo-Yo Ma as the guest cellist on the recording. This text presents beginning cello technique and basic music reading fundamentals. There is an emphasis on using melodies and classical pieces to instruct each new concept. This volume gradually introduces the most important thumb techniques:

At first, the 4 finger patterns in thumb position are introduced systematically. The thumb first remains placed over the octave harmonics. Later, other thumb positions are added. At the end of the volume, the change from one thumb position to the other and the octave parallels are practised.

In order that the student does not miss out on the fun, each topic comes with 'tailor-made' pieces and arrangements of the author from classical, folk, rock, and jazz music. Many pieces also come with piano parts and mp3s for download. The programme is completed by many examples from the classical cello literature.

The author recommends using the comprehensive material in various ways. The order can be changed without any problems. Chapters or difficult passages can be skipped and practised later. This volume should be used over a longer period, yet can be occasionally laid aside for a while.
