2. More lyrical pieces, meaning more song-like, more Romantic than Baroque style.
3. A teacher accompaniment part. The students find it enjoyable, and it teaches them how important it is to listen and to play in time, in tune, and with dynamics. Can also be used for recitals.
4. Familiar tunes. What is familiar to one person is unknown to others, but I tried to put in pieces that many people would be familiar with.
5. Shifting with familiar tunes. When I was a student, I found it easier to learn a shift if the piece was familiar. My ear knew where to go. I have included a few pieces with two versions: first position and shifting . The student can learn the first position version and then be able to learn shifting with a familiar tune.

This score was transcribed based on the Homage of Yo Yo Ma to Ennio Morricone released on Twitter when he learned of his death. In his own words:

'I'll never forget the way Ennio Morricone described music as ?energy, space, and time.? It is, perhaps, the most concise and accurate description I?ve ever heard. We'll truly miss him.'

Here we transcribe and arrange perhaps the most emblematic melody of Morricone, transcribed for cello solo. The piece fits well at concert ends as an encore, or as a transition piece. You will impress your audience with this beautiful melody. Enjoy.

"Tennessee Whiskey" was originally written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove in 1981. It has since been recorded by several notable country artists, but the most commercially successful of these was Chris Stapleton in 2015, whose version shot to the top of the charts and was certified platinum after he performed it with Justin Timberlake at the Country Music Association awards. This arrangement for solo cello was originally commissioned for a wedding prelude, and it maintains the beautiful melodic lines, passionate dynamic changes, and steady groove of the original. This sweet and slow country love song describes how love can lift you out of a dark place in your life, so of course it will be perfect not just for weddings, but for receptions, proposals, cocktail hour, parties, and any other occasion you want your audience to start slow-dancing! No accompaniment part -- it stands alone, or can be played with a backing track for solo gigs. Rated advanced-intermediate for a LOT of complex, almost improvisational-sounding rhythms and some high notes (up to 4th position).

Somewhere Over The Rainbow from THE WIZARD OF OZ, by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, arranged for solo cello by Alison Gillies.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow has become something of an anthem for the NHS in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic. This arrangement for solo cello is in G major and suitable for intermediate players of approximately grade 3-5 standard. It is all in bass clef and the highest note is A above middle C.

El Noi de la Mare (The Child of the Mother) is a traditional Catalan Christmas song. Here it is arranged for solo Cello in the key of G major. The melody has been harmonized and elaborated upon. The tune is played first with the bow with some left hand pizzicato, and then strummed with pizzicato. The famous guitar arrangement by Miguel Llobet has served as inspiration. This arrangement has many chords and some artifical harmonics, and is suitable for advanced players. It would make a good piece for a solo recital or encore.

From the 2004 Studio Ghibli Film 'Howl's Moving Castle', the ever popular main theme of Merry-go-round of Life is arranged as a fun piece for Cello Solo, with an interesting segment in pizzicato to highlight the colour and wonders this film brings about.

Suitable for performances, class repertoire and solo gigs!
