Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1138184). Each of the instruments has its turn to play the tune or varied versions of it. The key sequence is: D major using the basic statement with additional passing notes and decorations, with first flute taking the melody. It then moves up in the 2nd verse to E dorian with a slightly renaissance feel, with alto flute taking the melody. The 3rd verse, with bass flute on melody, goes on up to a jolly renaissance-style dance also in E Dorian, incorporating a mix of 3/4 and 6/8 rhythms. The final verse goes back to the D major 4/4 version with additional decorations and passing notes, while also occasionally reminding the audience of the 6/8-style contra-rhythms of the Dorian verses. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1136040). Hélas madame is attributed to King Henry VIII. It is part of a secular collection, found on a manuscript that was used in Henry's court. The originality of the song has been questioned, with various parts of the song allegedly taken from similar pieces in Europe. The song itself is a courtship conversation in Middle French between a man and woman. Hélas madame, celle que j’ayme tant: Souffrez que soye vostre humble servant; Vostre humble servant je serays a toujours Et tant que je viv’ray aultr’ n’aymeray que vous.
