Published by EMK Music (A0.834008). Before he died in 1918, Debussy had been planning to visit the USA. However, it is probable that he became familiar with the syncopated rhythms of ‘Ragtime’ and of the ‘Cakewalk’, used in Le Petit Negre, through the music of Scott Joplin. Le Petit Negre is taken from Debussy’s ‘Children’s Corner’ , a collection of pieces for Piano that he dedicated to his daughter, Claude-Emma, after her death at the age of fourteen. Debussy used language that was in common usage at the time, but some of his titles, including this one, now sound unavoidably racist. In addition to syncopation, Debussy also uses other techniques in this piece that have been adopted by jazz musicians, for example, pentatonic scales and chromaticism.

Published by EMK Music (A0.833983). 'La Chevaleresque' has been variously translated as 'a titled lady riding a horse', the 'spirit of chivalry', 'the cavalier' and so on. Nevertheless, the traditional link between chivalry and the gallant knight on horseback is quite evident. In the music itself, which has a consistent underlying pulse, Burgmüller cleverly manipulates the notation to express the various gaits of a horse, starting with an 'elegant but unsteady walk' and culminating in a brilliant semiquaver gallop! It’s great fun to play.

His set of Spanish Dances have been arranged for different Chamber combinations, including The Spanish Dance No 5 (Bolero) which was used in David Lean's film, Brief Encounter (1945). This piece, Spanish Dance, Op.12, No 1, has also, for good reason, retained its popularity in a number of different musical settings.

Published by EMK Music (A0.834035). Humoresque', originally written for Piano in G Flat Major, is the seventh of a set of eight similar capricious pieces. While Director of the 'National Conservatory of Music' in New York, Dvorak spent the Summer of 1893 with his family in the Czech speaking community of Spillville, Iowa where he was inspired to write 'Humoresque'. A degree of 'American influence' is evident in 'Humoresque' with the use of Pentatonic Scales, and is one of Dvorak's best known compositions.

While the melody of ‘To a Wild Rose’ has a poignant and retrospective romantic simplicity, more contemporary textures are achieved through the use of more progressive chords with altered, fifths, sevenths and ninths. The overall effect is an endearing charm that has contributed to its longevity.
