Published by Ron Baptiste (A0.983807). Haydn wrote this for flute, violin, and cello; I've arranged it for flute trio. It could be performed by 3 soprano flutes, 2 soprano and alto, or all 4. flute 3 and alto parts are basically the same, but adding the lower alto part does improve the sound balance considerably. I'd rate it overall as about 3-3.5 - not too difficult, but pretty fast tempo; flute 2 has a pretty difficult part in movement 3 that might require a little work!

This is written in one broad movement for a Flute in C quartet. I wrote it because I love the flute and want to incorporate a theme and variations approach. Each terrace gets a little more involved with counterpoint, etc., in the tonal fabric, building up to a dramatic tension point and then a D.C. back to the beginning to hold it all together and come to a final cadence. It is loosely based and inspired by the Baroque dance suite approach, very freely using the drama, echoes, tensions and cadences, telling a story. It is motivated by universal human experiences in living life (the drama of the terrace dynamics), making the most of opportunities using available resources -- all that good stuff! The title page is a dramatic photo of the Northern Lights from Alaska showing terraces, starting with our earth and looking upwards to infinity. The audio clip is not a sample, but a MIDI rendition of the whole composition.

Debussy added just a very little while arranging, but what he did add makes a big difference in how well these two pieces work for a woodwind quartet. The 3,1 in the title refer to Debussy's reversing the order deliberately to make the music flow better when using only two of the pieces. John Gibson used this setting for his flute quartet that includes flute 1-3, and alto flute with an alternate 4th flute if there is no alto available.

A favorite trad/celtic piece we learned in trad class (thanks Tami !). We learn these trad pieces by ear, no music involved. The tune (flute 1) is as we learned it - although it seems all trad music has endless variations that predominate in various regions; the harmonies came out of my own head, seemed appropriate, and likely bear little resemblance to anything you'd hear in Ireland, but it's fun to play!
