Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1136040). Hélas madame is attributed to King Henry VIII. It is part of a secular collection, found on a manuscript that was used in Henry's court. The originality of the song has been questioned, with various parts of the song allegedly taken from similar pieces in Europe. The song itself is a courtship conversation in Middle French between a man and woman. Hélas madame, celle que j’ayme tant: Souffrez que soye vostre humble servant; Vostre humble servant je serays a toujours Et tant que je viv’ray aultr’ n’aymeray que vous. A piece for flute quartet (4 flutes, no bass/alto) written for Sue Pamp wo asked me to write this for her group. The piece has three movements:1. Spring: This movement depicts the birds and fowers in spring as the world comes to life after winter. halting at first, the new growth soon progresses to a hubub of sound. The ending is not a typical cadence, because I didn't want it to feel finished or in any way complete.2. Aurora: Named for the goddess of the dawn, strange harbinger of new beginnings. Aurora is ethereal and strange, difficult to pin down. Although the music is slow in tempo, the shifting harmonies make much use of dissonance to create a feeling of evanescence and instability.3 Life Stream: A final joyous shout as life grows at an exponential rate, filling the air with joyful sounds.

I have included an optional cello part which reinforces or replaces the Bass Flute part.This is one of my personal favorite pieces. Offering a reflective mood, it is the epitome of French Romanticism. A floral sea; a cloudless night was adapted from music originally composed for my upcoming hypertext opera, Not Quite a Sunset. Through a combination of guided improvisation and fully composed sections, the four flutists create textures that evoke the dreamworld experienced by the protagonist of the opera. The wind picks up around me, rousing me from sleep, and I open my eyes, but I do not move, only breathe. I am lying on my side in a field of long grass, the brushÂlike ends of which nudge me softly in rhythm with the moving air, encouraging me to get up. Something Â- the floral scent in the air, the chattering of insects around me  seems familiar about this place, though I am not entirely sure where I am.I begin to sit up slowly, first propping myself up on my elbows, taking in my surroundings. The tall grass spreads out in an endless sea around me, shaded black and grey by the darkness, occasionally glinting silver as it sways.  -excerpt from Not Quite a Sunset

Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1138187). There are (at least) 2 settings of Tennyson's poem Sweet and Low, one by Barnby and one by Stanford. This is a set of variations on Barnby's setting. As the piece progresses after the original transcription, the top melody becomes melismatic and is shared amongst all the instruments in turn, ending with a brief canon based on the initial phrase.
