Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1138184). Each of the instruments has its turn to play the tune or varied versions of it. The key sequence is: D major using the basic statement with additional passing notes and decorations, with first flute taking the melody. It then moves up in the 2nd verse to E dorian with a slightly renaissance feel, with alto flute taking the melody. The 3rd verse, with bass flute on melody, goes on up to a jolly renaissance-style dance also in E Dorian, incorporating a mix of 3/4 and 6/8 rhythms. The final verse goes back to the D major 4/4 version with additional decorations and passing notes, while also occasionally reminding the audience of the 6/8-style contra-rhythms of the Dorian verses. As you might expect, the 2nd flute takes the melody here. Performed by Anita Szabó Ildikó Szabady Iza Nagy Boglárka Dávid.

Published by Jennyflute Music (A0.1031437). 2018 Holiday Contest Entry Silent NightArranged for Flute Quartet (or Choir) by Jenifer Aragon Silent Night, probably the best known Christmas melody, was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. It was the arranger’s objective in writing this four verse set to bring the most beautiful harmonies and variations possible to give something new and unusual to this tune. It works equally well as a performance piece or as a piece where people can sing along. The arrangement keeps interest with a variety of tonalities and occasional dissonants which resolve into lovely harmonies. The first verse starts with a lovely duet between the first and second flutes joined by the Alto and Bass flutes with chordal support. The second verse has the first and second flutes conversing in a call and response. The lower instruments support with moving harmonies. In the third verse, the first flute plays a lovely descant over the traditional Silent Night melody and in the fourth verse you hear a delicate obbligato played by the piccolo while the lower flutes play the melody. While the actual parts are two C flutes and piccolo), Alto and Bass, the arranger has included transposed parts - Alto to C flute, 2nd flute in lower register – to expand to Flute Choir. It is suggested the Alto flute and Bass flute parts be doubled to create maximum depth in the performance of this piece.

The Skye Boat Song is a late 19th-century Scottish song adaptation of a Gaelic song composed c.1782 by William Ross, entitled Cuachag nan Craobh (Cuckoo of the Tree). In the original song, the composer laments to a cuckoo that his unrequited love, Lady Marion Ross, is rejecting him. The 19th-century English lyrics instead evoked the journey of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) from Benbecula to the Isle of Skye as he evaded capture by government soldiers after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. It is often played as a slow lullaby or waltz. It entered the modern folk canon in the twentieth century with versions by Paul Robeson, Tom Jones, Rod Stewart, Roger Whittaker, Tori Amos, and many others. Bear McCreary adapted the song as the opening theme music of the 2014 TV series Outlander, sung by Raya Yarbrough, changing the text of Robert Louis Stevenson's poem Sing Me a Song of a Lad That Is Gone (1892) to Lass to fit the story.This arrangement for SSAB or SSSB Flute Quartet is suitable for a wide variety of performance and concert settings.
