This particular piece was written for Piano by Scott in 1917, and was dedicated to a friend of his, Archibald Rowan Hamilton, who died of wounds in October 1915. REQUIESCAT. REST IN PEACE. Here scored for Clarinet Septet. (4 Bb Clarinets, Alto Clarinet & 2 Bass Clarinets) PROGRAMME NOTE Cyril Meir Scott (1879-1970), was a great English composer, writer, poet and occultist. He created over 400 musical compositions in his long life including works for Violin, Piano, a Cello Concerto, Symphonies and Operas.

SWEET SUITE: QUARTET FOR CLARINETS Featuring the music of ALEXANDRE GUILMANT In this delightful suite of 4 movements, I have chosen four very eclectic works by the French Organist and Composer Alexandre Guilmant. In his time (1837-1911) he helped found the Schola Cantorum of Paris, and served as Professor of Organ at the Paris Conservatoire from 1896 until his death. His Wiki entry is an interesting read!! Oh, and don't be fooled by the gentle lilt of the first movement! 1. CHANT DU MATIN This jolly piece has a very memorable theme, with an almost Music Hall 'middle eight' section, littered with grace notes, and ends with a big 'film' finish! 2. FUGUE GRAVE Blessed with beautifully lush harmonies, and with the unusual theme based on the diminished 7th, it quite literally makes the Clarinet Quartet sing. 3. ASPIRATION RELIGIEUSE Despite the religious connotations in the title, this is an almighty vehicle for the Bass Clarinet to shine!The 3 Bb Clarinets hold a singularly static but lovely theme above, as the Bass Clarinet tumbles over the chords with relish from start to finish. A must play for your Bass player! 4. FUGHETTA IN A MINOR This is just a fantastic musical romp for 4 accomplished players! In 1889, a struggling composer called Pietro Mascagni heard about a sponsored competition for one-act operas, specifically for young Italian composers who had not yet had an opera performed, only two months before the deadline. With little time, he selected the subject for his opera and asked his childhood friend, Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti (who was helped by Guido Menasci), to write a libretto for him. Mascagni selected a story that he had seen as a play in Milan in early 1884 by realist writer Giovanni Verga, “Rustic Chivalryâ€, or Cavalleria rusticana. A passionate love tragedy featuring seduction, adultery, revenge and murder, it is surprising set on Easter morning.Mascagni received only a few verses at a time from his librettists, but he was not worried because he had the opera clear in his mind: “I identified with the drama to such an extent that I felt it within myself in terms of music.†After two months’ of work, the music for Cavalleria rusticana was finished but he feared the opera would fail and put the music in a draw. Fortunately, his wife sent it off, he unanimously won the competition and was soon the talk of Europe. (At the premiere in May 1890 in Rome, Mascagni received no fewer than 60 curtain calls.) Unfortunately, it was a one-hit wonder with Mascagni unable to repeat its success, saying towards the end of his life that “it is a pity I wrote Cavalleria first for I was crowned before I became king.†He died, penniless, in 1945.Today, few people have heard of Mascagni’s name, and, if they have, it is rarely in relation to anything but one piece from Cavalleria rusticana, the Intermezzo. A short piece of purely orchestral music that is uses to denote the passage of time, the orchestration is very simple but it is such an indulgently beautiful melody (based on a hymn heard earlier in the short opera) that perfectly captures the peace of country living in Sicily against the intense feelings of the main characters and the looming tragedy to come.The piece is so popular that (along with the “Easter Hymn†from the same opera), it is the only reason Mascagni features in the Classic FM’s Hall of Fame.The piece was used in the 1980 film Raging Bull and the 1990 film The Godfather Part III.This arrangement includes alternative parts for clarinet in E-flat and alto clarinet in E-flat. Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings in C Major was written with an ear towards one of his idols, a certain 18th century composer by the name of Mozart. The title and structure of the piece are taken from the serenades of the latter, though this is certainly Tchaikovsky's own particularly 19th century rendering of these older ideas. That it is a masterful work, is demonstrated by the fact that it still remains among the most performed and appreciated by the public alongside the serenades by AntonÃn Dvořák and Josef Suk. The final movement begins with slow and subdued section, based on a Russian folk song, stands in stark contrast to the core of the movement, which is a very quick-paced and rollicking finale based on another Russian folk melody—this time a dance tune. This dance tune spins out and gives the orchestra a rather strenuous workout. It is almost as if the piece is continually building and building, seemingly getting faster, until Tchaikovsky channels the inventiveness and unpredictability of his beloved Mozart. This arrangement for clarinet quartet (Bb Clarinet 1 or Eb Clarinet, Bb Clarinet 2, Bb Clarinet 3 or Eb Alto Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet) reflects faithfully the original and is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

Published by Sonata Grendel Publishing (A0.837482). All the movements of Four World Variants are based on one theme. The theme proper can be heard in the fugue subject of the first movement. The second movement uses the theme in retrograde inversion (backwards and upside down) to emulate the music of Gagaku. Gagaku literally translates as elegant music and is the ancient imperial court music of Japan. The third movement uses the theme in retrograde (simply backwards) to create a sarabande. Sarabandes are typically associated with the dance suites of the Baroque era but are said to have originated in Central and North America. The Sarabande was banned for a time in 16th century Spain for it’s lascivious nature. The final movement uses the original form of the theme combined with a traditional drumming pattern of the Ewe people of Togo, Benin, and Ghana, West Africa. I. Europe: An Enlightenment Fugue II. Asia: A Gagaku Serenade III. A New World Sarabande IV.
