The work refers to the myth of the poet and musician Orpheus and his wife, Eurydice, the oldest love myth of classical Greece. Peer Gynt, Op. 23, is the incidental music to Henrik Ibsen's 1867 play of the same name, written by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg in 1875. Grieg later created two suites from his Peer Gynt music.
