In 1889, a struggling composer called Pietro Mascagni heard about a sponsored competition for one-act operas, specifically for young Italian composers who had not yet had an opera performed, only two months before the deadline. With little time, he selected the subject for his opera and asked his childhood friend, Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti (who was helped by Guido Menasci), to write a libretto for him. Mascagni selected a story that he had seen as a play in Milan in early 1884 by realist writer Giovanni Verga, “Rustic Chivalryâ€, or Cavalleria rusticana. A passionate love tragedy featuring seduction, adultery, revenge and murder, it is surprising set on Easter morning.Mascagni received only a few verses at a time from his librettists, but he was not worried because he had the opera clear in his mind: “I identified with the drama to such an extent that I felt it within myself in terms of music.†After two months’ of work, the music for Cavalleria rusticana was finished but he feared the opera would fail and put the music in a draw. Fortunately, his wife sent it off, he unanimously won the competition and was soon the talk of Europe. (At the premiere in May 1890 in Rome, Mascagni received no fewer than 60 curtain calls.) Unfortunately, it was a one-hit wonder with Mascagni unable to repeat its success, saying towards the end of his life that “it is a pity I wrote Cavalleria first for I was crowned before I became king.†He died, penniless, in 1945.Today, few people have heard of Mascagni’s name, and, if they have, it is rarely in relation to anything but one piece from Cavalleria rusticana, the Intermezzo. A short piece of purely orchestral music that is uses to denote the passage of time, the orchestration is very simple but it is such an indulgently beautiful melody (based on a hymn heard earlier in the short opera) that perfectly captures the peace of country living in Sicily against the intense feelings of the main characters and the looming tragedy to come.The piece is so popular that (along with the “Easter Hymn†from the same opera), it is the only reason Mascagni features in the Classic FM’s Hall of Fame.The piece was used in the 1980 film Raging Bull and the 1990 film The Godfather Part III.This arrangement includes alternative parts for clarinet in E-flat and alto clarinet in E-flat. Jules Demersseman was born on January 9, 1833 in Hondschoote, a small town in the north of France now near the border of Belgium. He entered the Paris Conservatory in 1844 in the class of Jean-Louis Tulou and won a first prize in flute in 1845. Demersseman had a career as a pedogogue and soloist, often performing his own compositions. A close friend of Adolphe Sax, he wrote some of the first works ever written for the saxophone, as well as for the saxhorn and for Sax‘s valved trombone, most of which were published by Sax himself.. Demersseman died in Paris on December 1, 1866 at the age of 33. Two versions of this work were published by the Adolphe Sax puublishing company: a version for voice and organ and a version for voice with Alto Saxophone, Sax Valved Trombone and Bass Saxhorn, an interesting combination which is perhaps not as easy to find as it was in Sax's showroom, where the piece was likely performed to show the qualities of Sax's instruments. These versions are also published by Musik Fabrik in seperate editions. This current version was arranged using the first edition of the trio version as its source, and the saxophone and voice parts remain essentially as in the original, with some editorial dynamic changes. The version may be performed in three possible ways: either as a piece for Clarinet Quartet, as a work with Voice and Clarinet Trio, or as a work with Voice and clarinet quartet, with Clarinet 1 doubling the voice. A voical part (in C) is included with the set.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CMF184). 9 x 12 in inches.Der Leiermann, translated as The Hurdy-Gurdy Player, is the final song from Franz Schubert's song cycle Winterreise, a work that follows the protagonist as he visits sites of a past summer love in what is now the dead of winter. This song's text describes the lonely hurdy-gurdy player standing at the edge of the village, barefoot in the ice and attempting to play despite numb fingers, extreme hunger, and societal alienation, and the speaker wonders aloud if his sadness and loneliness might make them kindred spirits. Schubert's music includes droning modal figures designed to evoke the sounds of the hurdy-gurdy, overlaid with a sad, simple melody. This transcription for clarinet quartet rotates the melody through the ensemble, giving equal weight to each of its four members. The transcription was originally completed as part of a set of adaptations from Schubert's Lieder; when grouped with the other transcriptions in the set (Gretchen am Spinnrade, Die Forelle, and Mut) it functions well as the slow movement in a suite.

Harry Burleigh was an African American composer who often used Southern spiritual music as the influence for his compositions. He studied with Dvorak in New York, and is primarily known for he transcription of slave songs into classical forms. This arrangement of Southland Sketches is the 3rd mvt of his work for violin and piano written in 1916. It features two main sections, and the work is about three and a half minutes. This piece is suitable for mature musicians for programming and can also be performed by younger players. Every instrument gets a share of the melodies, including bass clarinet. While not a technically difficult work (nothing above a high C), playing with the correct inflections, blend, and tone is critical to a great performance. This work is always a crowd pleaser, and is a wonderful gateway into the compositions of a relatively unknown American composer. Wonderful for Patriotic concerts, recitals, retirement homes, and Black History Month.

It invokes feelings of being lost at sea and drifting along the waves in the ocean far from shore. The melody lines are somewhat uneven but feel natural as if they are being sung in the late hours of the night. Rising and falling passages in the background reflect the waves on these moonlit nights. This piece was commissioned by a wonderful colleague of mine Tim Chernobrov. He wanted something that would capture the unique sound of the low harmony clarinets and make them shine in their own light. In doing so, he hopes to spark more interest in these less common clarinets. Instrumentation Low clarinet quartet consisting of - Alto Clarinet Bass Clarinet Contra Alto Clarinet Contrabass Clarinet.

Known mainly these day for the wonderful 'Scherzo' from his Symphony No.4 in D Minor, during a colourful lifetime, Henry Litolff wrote many virtuosic compositions, indeed he was feted by many of his contemporary peers. Liszt himself in fact dedicated his first piano concerto to Litolff. Les Octaves is a bravura work typical of Litolff's style, this arrangement brings many technical challenges for the five players to 'get their teeth into', not least of course that it is scored for Eb, Bb, A, Basset Horn & Bass Clarinets!! Mendelssohn wrote this when he was about 12 or 13, but it is a wonderful work and sounds glorious on clarinets.

Ravel wrote 3 Chansons while waiting to be enlisted in the military during World War 1, and the only piece that he wrote for acapella choir. This is the 3rd movement of that piece, and it makes a great instrumental quartet piece. The song is about adults telling their children not to go into the woods of Ormond because there are monsters there. What makes the song fun is the list names of all of the monsters that reside in these woods. I've added the lyrics on my title page just as a reference, since as an instrumental quartet, this won't be conveyed to your audience. That said, if you didn't know what his piece is about, it's quite charming! This arrangement is for 4 Bb clarinets. There is an optional Eb alto part that can be played in place of the 4th Bb part.
