Clarinet Quartet - 3 x Bb Clarinets and Bass Clarinet The words of this hymn were inspired by a series of tragedies in the life of hymn writer, Horatio Spafford. He lost his 4 year old son in a Chicago fire in 1871 and two years later he lost all 4 of his daughters when the ship, SS Ville du Havre, sank while they were travelling from the USA to England. Only his wife survived the journey. He wrote these words while he travelled alone to meet his grieving wife shortly afterwards.The hymn was first published in 1876, set to a tune by Philip Bliss which is still known as Ville du Havre. It exists in versions with either 4 or 5 verses. This arrangement for clarinet quartet consists of 5 verses, each with slightly altered harmonisation or articulation, to suit the words. For example in verse 3 the words Nailed to the Cross are accompanied by accented stabbing chords. Verse 5 has some trumpet-like fanfares to match the reference to the Trump[et] Calls in the text. The words to the hymn are shown in the score and in the first clarinet part, so the arrangement can be used in a worship setting. Verses can be omitted to suit your liturgical needs. Similarly, if the arrangement is used for an instrumental performance, verses can be omitted as required. Duration: 5’ to 5’30 Â

In the Mood was a huge hit for the Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1940, but the melody for In the Mood had been around in different versions with different bands for at least a decade before. But it was the Glenn Miller version that grabbed the public’s attention, becoming almost the soundtrack to the Second World War. In the Mood has never lost its appeal and has been recognised as culturally significant by the Library of Congress. In 1951 In the Mood became the first piece of music to be played by a computer.This arrangement of In the Mood is written with accessibility in mind. It is arranged for Clarinet Quartet or Choir; that is for three Bb Clarinets, plus Bass Clarinet. There is also an alternative part 3 for Alto Clarinet in Eb. This arrangement aims to deliver the big band sound with a smaller group. The solos from the original Glenn Miller recording are transcribed and notated in full, though players may prefer their own improvisations. This arrangement is ideal for smaller groups and combos looking to add this perennial favourite to their repertoire.The single pdf file you download contains both the full score and the individual parts. A descant B-flat clarinet is included that can be used in lieu of an E-flat clarinet.

It invokes feelings of being lost at sea and drifting along the waves in the ocean far from shore. The melody lines are somewhat uneven but feel natural as if they are being sung in the late hours of the night. Rising and falling passages in the background reflect the waves on these moonlit nights. This piece was commissioned by a wonderful colleague of mine Tim Chernobrov. He wanted something that would capture the unique sound of the low harmony clarinets and make them shine in their own light. The 19th century hymn Abide with Me, set to the tune Eventide, is often used for funerals. The 18th century bugle call The Last Post is often played to commemorate those who have lost their lives in armed conflict and is played at annual Remembrance Day services in much of the English speaking world. Here the come together in a lovely arrangement where the soloist plays the bugle call while the clarinet quartet play the hymn. In the version without soloist, clarinet 1 plays a hymn line as well as the bugle call. This work is suitable for funerals, other solemn occasions, military events and recitals.Note that the audio and scrolling score video is of the Clarinet Quintet version. The quartet is the same arrangement but the solo part is embedded in the 1st clarinet part.

Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.1342598). 8 Ball is an exploration of the emotional swings of grief — shock and sorrow, emptiness and isolation, pain and finality — mixed with wistful, treasured memories recognizing the blessing of sharing life with a loved one, and added to this the hope of eternal reunion. It’s written in memory of my brother, Tex, who we lost to COVID in 2020. In homage to his passion, dirt track racing, there is a contrasting section of paint-swapping, fender-bending frenzy, which comes to an all too sudden end as did his life. The title has nothing to do with billiards but refers to his long-tenured racing number and logo.The music uses unconventional scales which are actually six-tone pitch sets treated as different key centers. They produce a lush mixture of consonance and dissonance that at turns feel comforting and unsettling.Writing 8 Ball was a cathartic experience to explore my own emotions, cement my brother’s proper place in my memories, and produce a tangible expression of my love for my brother. It was written as an assignment in the 2023 summer composition workshop at Tarrant County College. I’m grateful to my instructor, Dr. Aaron Kline, the music department at TCC, and the musicians of our performing quartet for their part in bringing this music to life.
