In 2019, during my stay at Chapada dos Veadeiros in Goiás, Brazil, I went in search of the flavor of the local coffee. Xinguara was recommended to me, which inspired me to compose ten songs, this being the first composition in this series. In this version for Clarinet Quartet, the rhythmic and harmonic elements of these two genres, the baião and the maxixe, are mixed and result in an interesting conversation between the instruments, alternating their accompaniment and solo functions. A fun, uncomplicated piece that gives the listener the energy of a café in the Brazilian cerrado. Try it !!!

Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer who had a fulfilling career as a court musician in the 1700's and was a friend of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Flötenuhrstücke, or flute clock, was a mechanical instrument similar to what we would now know as a music box. Haydn wrote 32 pieces for this instrument, which have been transcribed for piano solo. This arrangement includes pieces 1 through 4 for clarinet quartet. I have made many note changes to these pieces, so if you are looking for a true transcription, this is not it. Most of the chord structure remains intact, although the 4th movement is 40/60 Haydn and mine. My intent was to arrange this work in a way that kept all 4 musicians playing 99% of the time without any 2 parts having to play the exact same thing for too long. Again, if you are familiar with the original work, this arrangement will sound different, and I'm not so sorry about it. ;) It is simple enough for musicians with intermediate skill. The Beatles: "Hey Jude" arranged clarinet quartet of 3 Bb and bass clarinet.My arrangement differs to some of the other quartet arrangements you may find, both on this site and elsewhere .I have NOT simply transcribed it from a piano arrangement i.e. given the tune to the 1st player and given broken chords or sustaining notes to the other three.Rather: I have moved the melody around and given the other players interesting original moving lines to play.Hope you enjoy playing it "2016 Arranging Contest Entry".
