Strauss' Annen-Polka had her first appearance in the garden of a Vienna Prater building called Zum Wilden Mann ("The Wild Man" in German). Polka has its name from the celebrations for the St. Anne's Day, a recurrence that falls on July 26, 1852 (one of the most important festivities of the Viennese calendar), although Johann presented his new job two days earlier on July 24, at an outdoor festival. The Gypsy Baron (Der Zigeunerbaron) is an operetta in three acts by Johann Strauss II which premiered at the Theater an der Wien on 24 October 1885. During the composer's lifetime, the operetta enjoyed great success, second only to the popularity of Die Fledermaus. The original literary source for Die Fledermaus was Das Gef�ngnis (The Prison), a farce by German playwright Julius Roderich Benedix that premiered in Berlin in 1851. On 10 September 1872, a three-act French vaudeville play by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Hal�vy, Le R�veillon, loosely based on the Benedix farce, opened at the Th��tre du Palais-Royal. Meilhac and Hal�vy had provided several successful libretti for Offenbach and Le R�veillon later formed the basis for the 1926 silent film So This Is Paris, directed by Ernst Lubitsch.
