Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891916). The final composition of J.S.Bach is surprisingly triumphant, despite his demise just after bar 239. It's also a matter of scholarly conjecture that Bach wrote 'The Art of Fugue' for the keyboard, as some will argue that certain Contrapunctii (?!) are almost impossible to play, bearing in mind that the sustain pedal had yet to be invented. And thus, the most credible path would be that Bach wrote them as A) Academic exercises for study or B) To be played by a suitable ensemble. I'm going with the latter obviously! I include Donald Tovey's conclusion to the work, its brilliance is noted the world over, but surely not what Bach intended, but damn close!

He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. In Bach's own words ..... for the profit and use of musical youth desirous of learning, and especially for the pastime of those already skilled in this study....., we are literally invited by the great man himself, to enjoy playing his music in virtually any combination we like! The Clarinet Quartet is a fitting vehicle for these two pieces from The Well-Tempered Clavier Book 2, namely the Prelude No.1 and the Fugue No.22. The Prelude Completely different from the Prelude that opens Book 1, which is mainly broken chords, this opening Prelude to Book 2 features a continuously flowing sequence of melodic ideas. According to Levinson, ...few pieces of traditional music are more purely processive as this. It develops without a break or pause, without arrivals of significance, from beginning to end.... Good to play as well!! The Fugue The key of Bb Minor is a challenging mode for the Clarinet, coupled with the time signature of 3/2, this Fugue should prove interesting in rehearsal! The four voices are distributed throughout the parts, and at 101 bars, it is certainly one of Bach's longest, and definitely one of the most enjoyable to play, especially in a generous acoustic. Published by Lisa L Ochoco (A0.560046). Dona Nobis Pacem is a very well-known canon that most musicians have played. This arrangement is a fun study in negative harmony - as the title indicates. Negative harmony is the brainchild of Swiss composer, Ernst Levy. The concept, very simply put, is an inversion of chords and notes centered around an axis. The result is often quite interesting. The so-called Air on the G String dates from one of these latter employments. In the service of the Prince of Cöthen, Bach composed not only the famous Brandenburg Concertos, but also several orchestral suites, from the third of which comes the Air on the G String. This curious title derives from a later arrangement of this piece for violin solo, in which the melody is played entirely on the lower, higher string of the instrument. 2: Arioso - The Cantata 156 (BWV 156) was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year. The text is by Picander, one of Bach's favorite librettists. Of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast, it was the last and only one scored for solo voice. This is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different choral melodies and texts in the second and sixth movements. A cantata is a sung symphony consisting of several parts, one of which is the Arioso, which is the initial instrumental part. 3: Jesu, joy of man's desiring - This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works. 4: O Jesulein süss, o Jesulein mild - The Jesulein süß, the Jesulein mild is an original traditional German choral melody for voice and continuous bass arranged by Johann Sebastian Bach around 1735. With lyrics by Valentin Thilo, O Jesulein süss is a sacred melody adapted and catalogued as BWV 493. The first translation is by Dirk van Hogendorp, who made it more of a song for the time of suffering. 5: Minuet in G major - This famous piece has traditionally been attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, as it appears in the Notebook for Anna Magdalena , a notebook that Bach gave to his wife Anna Magdalena in 1725 and which was to be filled with the favorite selections of Bach family members. The majestic nature of the piece makes it a great recital performance that sounds very professional when all put together.
