Programme Notes: Mornings are powerful and evocative moments. The chorus of birds, one species after another, unite in a wild and genuine polyphony while the dew and mist evaporate upon the rising of the sun, encouraging goosebumps and shivers from an open window, tempered or exhilarated by a cup of coffee. Have you ever actively witnessed the sun’s sultry and intense ascension from the cradle of the horizon? That is what this piece, Aubade, or dawn song, is about. An aubade is the twin of a night-time serenade; an aubade is a love song originating amongst the medieval Provençal troubadours, depicting the morning departure between two lovers. A song for the slow cosmic percolation of a late summer morning. On a personal level, the composer is reminded of his own experiences, camping in Northern Canada, a simpler and less demanding time. This piece formally begins the series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies--his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!--though they can all stand on their own on any program. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles. The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.  The second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners. Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Published by Wadley Publications (A0.983174). The title of Sonar’s Riddle is an anagram of Dr. Daniel Ross, and stands as a tribute to a musician known for both his kindness and humor. Dr. Daniel F. Ross (1944-2019) was a Professor of Music at Arkansas State University, where he taught the double reed studio from 1968 to 2018. During his illustrious career, he became known as not only a world-class musician, but an innovator in the field of reed-making with his Ross Gouging Machine. As a performer, he served as Principal Oboist with the Arkansas Symphony and performed with the North Arkansas Symphony, Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra, Tupelo Symphony, Delta Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Nashville Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony, and the St. Louis Chamber Music Society. He was a frequent soloist with the Forum Sinfonia of Krakow, Poland, touring with them in the United Stated and Europe. He held the title of Visiting Professor of Oboe at the Academy of Music in Krakow, Poland and has been a soloist with the St. Petersburg and Moscow Philharmonic orchestras in Russia. As a teacher, Dr. Ross stressed the importance of expression. For him, being a musician was an extension of being human. In order to make music, one must cross the threshold from producing technically accurate sounds into a mysterious and sometimes elusive realm of heart, love, compassion, gentleness, and joy. In Dan Ross’ studio, one learned that a musician capable of evoking strong emotions must first be a person of great character. Dan Ross excelled in all things musical, but more importantly, he was an excellent man. He may well be remembered as a great musician, a great performer and teacher, or as an innovator in the art of reed making. But his true legacy lies in the hearts that he touched and the lives that he molded. I count myself fortunate to have been one of many. Sonar’s Riddle is a brief musical portrait of Dr. Dan Ross, attempting to capture the essence of his kind spirit and boundless humor.

Published by Daniel Hay Music (A0.596411). Probably the first composition the composer, Daniel Hay, created is the piece The Hermit: for Oboe and Strings. This treble clef arrangement is the melody from that piece. It was an experiment in modified 12-tone music structure. A friend from his years in Junior High School provided the melody concept. Many years later The Hermit was one of many compositions lost during Hurricane Katrina. The original score had been recovered because it had been sent to the composer's friend. In the piece, the hermit is represented by the solo instrument, and society is represented by the strings. This solo version can be played by any treble clef instrument although it was first expressed as an Oboe.

Duration: approx 4:00The Cry of Beltane for solo oboe was written for and premiered by an advanced, young oboe student, Leo Sherwood, and first performed in May 2017 as part of the Cleveland Composers Guild’s Creativity: Learning through Experience program. The piece was the program opener and is ideally suited to open a recital.Beltane is the anglicized name of the Celtic festival held on May Day, a pagan festival signifying the beginning of summer. The piece is intended to evoke a ritualistic, call to summer; a crying out and calling forth of sun and growth. The piece should sound aggressive and the oboe should aim to make the most of its harder-edged timbre, rather than its lyrical qualities. While the notation is precise, the piece should sound as if the performer had improvised it. The bigger the contrast in dynamics the better.Joseph Hollings (ASCAP) is a composer, arranger and music educator, and has taught music to students of all levels for over twenty five years. His arrangements have been performed internationally, including in London's West End, and have been recorded by the Onyx Brass Quintet and members of the Cleveland Orchestra. He studied composition with Harrison Birtwistle at King's College London, worked for the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, and established Really Nearly Records with the ever-imaginative Tim Ten Yen.
