Strong decrescendos set an airy, space theme filled with a theme traded between the tenor and soprano saxophone. The arrangement pivots into a 6/8 march as the players keep an eye out for period key changes. The soprano and alto saxophone trade off the melody in the dynamic piece. This is a wonderful performance piece for a multitude of engagements.

The Prelude has an irrevocable sense of momentum, only sated with a short cadenza like flourish and a final bout of arpeggios. The Fugue allows all four voices to develop and flourish after the forced regimentation of the Prelude. The difficulty level for the Prelude is about ABRSM grade 5-6 (there is also a substitute Soprano part on Alto to avoid some low C-Bb combinations if required), and the Fugue is a little higher. The PDF is 23 pages in length (portrait A4) and includes a full score and parts. The combined duration of the Prelude & Fugue is about 3 minutes 20 seconds.

Christmas Day is a choral fantasy on old carols, was written in 1910. It was originally composed for SATB with parts for a sizeable orchestra. It lasts for about seven minutes. The work was dedicated ‘To the music students of Morley College’. Apparently it was extremely well-received and had a further presentation on 18 February at a music students’ ‘Tea and Social’ event. A number of well-known carols are used in this ‘fantasy.’ Throughout the piece, the composer makes use of ‘God rest you merry gentlemen,’ ‘The First Nowell’ and a traditional melody derived from Brittany used to set the words ‘Come ye lofty; come ye lonely.’ The Duration is approx. 6.16 minutes and the level is Advanced Intermediate.
