For this Christmas here is a dramatic Fantasia for Instrumental Quartet based on the old English carol God Rest You Merry Gentlemen. It is an eclectic fusion of Classical music and 1950's Free Jazz and West Indian/Caribbean rhythms with exuberance and pulse. It is in verse-refrain form, but is very freely treated and each of the four verses is wholly unique. Every single note is written to express, and sometimes expand upon, the word of the text at that point in time. There is an irregular meter which changes every few bars using 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 7/4 but always maintaining a strong pulse. It contains abrupt changes in dynamics and a rubato tempo with many markings of articulation. The Austrian composer Johann Georg Albrechtsberger was an organist, teacher and theorist, indeed one of his many influential pupils was a certain Ludwig Van Beethoven. His own musical works were and still are a tour-de-force and widely recorded. In fact his Alto Trombone Concerto is very much a part of the repertoire for that instrument. He also wrote, what might be today regarded as quite strange, no less than 7 Concerti for the Jaws Harp and String Orchestra. (Youtube) In this Saxophone version the music is scored, unusually, for 3 equal Soprano Saxes AND Tenor Sax. The 5 pieces here are representitive of his masterly fugal output, tweaked here and there to suit this rare Saxophone Quartet format! Elements and is designed to musically portray the essential nature of the Classical Greek elements, fire, water, air and earth and their astrological implications. The first movement is Fire whose essential nature is strong and controlling. The music contains a lot of forceful sections, primarily in a homophonic style. The water element’s chief characteristic is sensitivity, therefore it is in a slow tempo and is lyrical and harmonically rich. The chief characteristic of the air element it is changeable, therefore this movement is filled with contrasts of texture, dynamics, articulation, meter, tonality, and orchestration. This last movement represents the Earth element whose main characteristic is stability. To represent stability musically, a lot of ostinatos were used. This work was commissioned by the h2 quartet in order to perform with a high school orchestra. Several substitute parts are provided. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Flight of the Bumblebee (1900) Nicolai Rimsky Korsakov SATB Saxophone Quartet Everyone knows Flight of the Bumblebee. Originally it was an instrumental interlude in the opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan (1900). Later it gained fame as a piano piece. As arranged for SATB Saxophone Quartet, it is a great little show off piece for a moderately advanced quartet. While no altissimo is required in any part, it requires fast fingers and a good command of chromatic scales from all players. Many people believe Flight of the Bumblebee to be a very difficult workout for musicians. If you're well practiced on chromatic scales and comfortable with alternate fingerings, it's really not so difficult as it sounds. There is no need to tell your audience this fact. As for it being relentlessly fast, the tempo given in the original orchestra score is only 144bpm. Perfomance time on this arrangement is about 1:15 but nothing is stopping you from playing it faster.

However, it's very much a joyful romp through a range of styles. (The original piece was for piano; this arrangement was made for the local Xyris Saxophone quartet, whose excellent performance is linked below. The original piano piece is also available for sale at Sheet Music Plus).The main theme is in 5/4 and it moves through a range of - mostly - irregular time-signatures, but uses a harmonic and melodic vocabluary strongly influenced by Bach, with lashings of some more jazzy language. The Premiere Arabesque is one of pair of piano arabesques Claude Debussy composed when he was still in his twenties, between the years 1888 and 1891. Although an early work, the arabesque contains hints of Debussy’s developing musical style. It is one of his early impressionistic pieces. Debussy seems to wander through modes and keys to create an evocative scene through music.The First Arabesque was originally in the key of E major but this arrangement for saxophone quartet has been lowered a semitone the key of E flat. Common time throughout, mostly and rhythmically straightforward but the tempo rises and falls frequently. Sometimes quite chromatic as it wanders through adjacent or remote keys. Parts are very independent. with a good deal of passing the famous arpeggiated melody between the soprano, alto, and tenor voices. A piece for a more experienced quartet. This arrangement includes a full score and soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone sax parts.
